SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three of the four American tourists killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya on Sunday night were from San Diego.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey told 10News David Baker, a Coronado resident, was killed in the crash. The US Embassy identified Brandon Stapper and Asher Burke, who also lived in San Diego, as victims earlier in the day Monday. They were riding in a helicopter that crashed in the Central Island National Park in Lake Turkana on country's northern border at 8:35 p.m. Sunday (2:35 a.m. ET), Kenya's Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement posted on its website."A rescue team was dispatched immediately and they arrived at the Central Island at around 11:20 p.m. and located the wreckage at 3:20 a.m. with no survivors," Kenya's aviation chief Gilbert Kibe said.READ: Pilot, 4 Americans killed in helicopter crash in KenyaStaff at Stapper's graphics company near Mission Hills told 10News that they learned Sunday evening the self-made entrepreneur was killed in the accident. In 2015, Stapper, was listed among San Diego's Top 10 Entrepreneurs to watch as a 29-year-old. According to his website, he left Michigan at the age of 20 "and drove to California to chase his dream. 6 months later, he saved 0 while working in a restaurant and purchased a custom decal machine on eBay with a friend.""Stapper has now founded, acquired, and invested in a broad portfolio of businesses and real estate. He currently spends his time acquiring, growing, and investing in companies as one of the Co-Founders and Operating Partners at a boutique private equity firm called Crown Grown," his web site says.Stapper's employees described him as being "more like a brother than a boss" and "was one of the most caring people he’s ever met.""He was a guy that everyday woke up with a smile on his face," said Brandon Blum, who met Stapper eight years ago through the San Diego Entrpreneurs' Organization."He had ambitions like nobody I'd ever seen. He had a spark like no one I'd ever seen in my life," said Blum.Stapper had traveled to Kenya to support Burke, who had recently purchased a lodge that he hoped to market as a retreat for business owners."Asher's vision was for entrepreneurs to come out and experience Kenya in an amazing way without rules," said Brett Stapper, Brandon's brother who had also been out to Kenya recently.David Baker, who worked in commercial real estate and owned several businesses was also on board."He was so excited about this trip," remembered Richard Bailey, the mayor of Coronado who was also good friends with Baker."Dave was an adventurer. More than anything, Dave lived life to the fullest," said Bailey. They were all actively involved in local business and entreprenerial activities. Alex Pellegrino, the president of the San Diego Entrepreneurs' Organization, told 10News, "we don't have a statement at this time other than the entire EO community is devastated by this tragedy."Investigators have not yet established the cause of the crash, according to the National Police Service. But according to Bailey, he got a phone call from Baker's girlfriend who suspected weather was to blame."It sounded as though they had been caught up in a wind storm or rain storm and was, in her opinion, likely the source of the problems the helicopter was experiencing," said Bailey.A local news outlet reported Monday that the two choppers had taken tourists to the island, which borders Ethiopia and is known for its colony of Nile crocodiles.CNN reported that air mishaps have become frequent in recent months in Kenya, a popular destination for international tourists visiting the east African nation for its vast wildlife and coastal attractions.Five people, including two Americans tourists, were killed in February after a small passenger plane crashed in Kenya's Mukatano forest. In July, 10 people aboard a small aircraft died after it crashed in the Aberdare forest in the mountainous region of the country.Stay with 10News for updates on this developing story.CNN contributed to this report. 4059

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This holiday season, shopping local is what will keep San Diego small businesses alive. The US Census conducted a small business survey showing a third of San Diego businesses were negatively impacted by the pandemic. The effect is visible downtown."The pandemic has definitely taken a toll on the neighborhood, I mean we've had some closures," Gaslamp Quarter Executive Director Association Michael Trimble said.Trimble said four to eight restaurants closed since March in the Gaslamp Quarter alone."Not a large percentage but still any business lost is unfortunately a business that we mourn is not here," he said. While the holiday sale signs are out, the usual crowds brought in with conventions and tourism are nowhere to be seen.Trimble said locals are vital to keeping retail and restaurants alive this holiday season."Watching all these small businesses shut down or close forever during the pandemic, it's just been really sad. So, I don't have a ton of money but Amazon doesn't need my money. You know what I mean? Like, if I can help these little shops with my or my that's just a much better use of my time," Pacific Beach Resident Bree Steffen said. When the pandemic started Steffen pledged to only shop small. She deleted her Amazon app and started exploring her neighborhood, "I feel like this whole underworld of San Diego opened up for me once I started looking at the smaller shops."She said it was a more personal experience, where she found unique gifts that had more emotional value from being hand-crafted.She launched her own small photography business in October. Now she relies on people like her to change their habits and think small."I feel like each time I at least give them a little business it just gives them a little more hope to keep going on and it's like if 100 people give them then that's enough for them to try to weather this storm," she said hopeful it will end soon.Trimble said on November 28th, also known as Small Business Saturday, if you take a picture while shopping or in the area and tag @GaslampQuarter on Instagram you will be entered to win a gift card from local establishments.Trimble said there has been one silver lining of the pandemic and that was testing the outdoor dining concept on Fifth Avenue out of necessity. That paved the way for a long coveted project to turn Fifth Avenue into a promenade. This project received approval from City Council, according to Trimble, and a timeline will be announced in early 2021. 2516

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The University of California San Diego is planning to make a new first impression. New renderings show the schools intentions of building a "‘grand entrance" to attract more students and people from San Diego. A 3,000 seat amphitheater, a six-building student center with retail and restaurants are just some of the things showcased in the new plans. “There is hardly a thing that exists in the Gaslamp or Balboa that doesn’t exist here,” said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla on the renderings. UCSD believes public transportation that’s being built near and on-campus will help with the future influx of people they want checking out their amenities. The blue line trolley and the three stations around the area are forecasted to be completed by 2021. “We want to be one more destination to the San Diego experience,” added Khosla, “we’re gonna change this campus to have these things so students can hang out and the community will come here to hang out too.” The price tag is still being worked out but it’s expected to cost well into the hundreds of millions of dollars. 1100

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The victim of a hit-and-run crash in South Park is calling for the City of San Diego to make streets safer. “It's been really difficult not being able to walk for seven weeks and having to be able to walk again, dealing with the side effects of the concussion and getting my brain working right,” said Vicki Granowitz. Surveillance video recorded one year ago shows Granowitz at the crosswalk of Grape and Fern streets. Before she can safely cross, a car hits her. Witnesses rushed to help as the car took off. Police later tracked down the driver, who pleaded guilty to the crash. RELATED: Study finds most dangerous intersections for pedestrians in San Diego Two stop signs have been erected at the intersection but Granowitz wants more improvements. Tuesday morning, Granowitz teamed up with Circulate San Diego for a news conference. The group wants the city to expand safety efforts under Vision Zero, Mayor Faulconer’s initiative to make the streets and sidewalks safer, and reduce traffic-related deaths and severe injuries to zero by 2025. 10News received a statement from the mayor’s office saying they are making investments for traffic projects. RELATED: Report looks at most dangerous North County intersections for pedestrians “In fiscal year 2020 alone, million was allocated to Vision Zero, including more than .8 million for bicycle facilities, .4 million for the installation of new sidewalks, .8 million for new traffic signals and .6 million for median installations,” according to Senior Public Information Officer Nicole Darling. 1590
