PARIS, May 11 (Xinhua) -- The efforts made by China on its course of development has made it a successful example for other emerging countries, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's chief said to Xinhua in an exclusive interview here on Tuesday, four days before her trip to China and the Shanghai Expo.The UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova will pay a working visit to Shanghai and Beijing from May 16, during which she will have a two-day stop for the Shanghai Expo, which has opened doors to the public on May 1."We've seen the efforts of China, which are spectacular in all areas of development ... it also shows that with political will, with the efforts of an entire people to focus on development, it is possible to overcome certain difficulties," she said.She praised China's "very impressive" development and said China should also share its experience with other developing countries because it "is a good example that can bring millions of people out of poverty by adapting to a globalized world."Additionally, she encouraged China to engage more into UNESCO affairs in Africa and in Asia on educational domain.As to the Shanghai Expo, the UNESCO has set up its own pavilion at the Expo site and Bokova herself has personally planned diversified activities, lectures and conversations at the pavilion to provide platforms for idea exchanges with Chinese people and foreign visitors, the veteran diplomat told Xinhua.The Shanghai World Expo "gives an opportunity for all countries and all organizations to make a sort of communication on their values and their activities," she said, seeing it "a great event for China and for the entire international community."Bokova is expected to launch a UN report on cultural diversity at the UNESCO pavilion, which is specially designed to focus on material and immaterial cultural heritages, education issues and scientific topics including climate change, water management and etc.She spoke highly of the great effort made by the Chinese authorities to organize the World Expo in Shanghai."I know that the 'motto' of this exhibition is about urban ( Better City, Better Life). We already know that 60 percent of the world population live in cities, the figure rises almost all the time. Some projections say that in fifty years there will be 80 percent of the world population live in cities," she indicated.According to the director general, the UNESCO is seeking answers through its experiences to some difficult issues that are associated with globalization and interconnectability of the world in the fields of culture, science and especially the education.She underlined that education and personnel training was the key factor to make a nation "competitive" and have "sustainable development."At last, the UNESCO chief issued a friendly message to China and Chinese people, saying China is a very old nation "with ancient roots very deep into all the culture of humans" and it meanwhile "shows the dynamism and creativity, which are examples for all the world.""I think China has proved that there are no limits, there is no problem that can not be overcome," she concluded.

BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has given priority to the rebuilding and repairing of residential houses during post-quake reconstruction in northwestern Yushu.A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province on April 14, leaving at least 2,200 dead."Houses that are repaired must be repaired in a timely manner. For those that are to be rebuilt, residents' wishes regarding house style must be respected," the statement released after a regular State Council meeting on Wednesday said.The statement noted the difficulties the reconstruction work faces: cold weather, low oxygen-levels, a fragile ecosystem, and inadequate construction resources.According to the statement, the country plans to spend three years finishing the "main reconstruction task."The government vowed to build the "safest and most stable" schools and hospitals in the quake zone while protecting local ethnic and religious cultural heritage.

HONG KONG, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong's leading charity donor, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said Sunday it had donated another 16.3 million HK dollars (2.1 million U.S. dollars) for earthquake-hit area in northwestern China's Qinghai province to help disaster relief work.Together with the emergency donation of 2 million HK dollars made earlier, the Jockey Club contributed over 18.3 million HK dollars to support relief work for victims of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which hit the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu in Qinghai on April 14.In a press release, the Jockey club said it achieved a net operating surplus of 15.36 million HK dollars on April 21 at the Happy Valley race meeting. All money had been passed to the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs for earthquake relief work.Chairman of the Jockey club, John C C Chan, said horse racing in Hong Kong not only is a form of entertainment, but is also a charitable undertaking which serves the people of Hong Kong and has a far-reaching significance to the community."We felt that by going ahead with our race meeting on April 21 and donating the net operating surplus to help Qinghai earthquake victims, we would be able to give strong support to the relief efforts at the same time as maintaining a stable contribution to the public purse," he said.In addition, the Jockey Club launched a public fund-raising drive between April 21 and 25. BEIJING, April 23 (Xinhua) -- China's trade surplus this year will see a decline from the 2009 level despite a recovery in foreign trade, the People's Bank of China, the central bank, said here Friday.An increase in orders would push up export growth to more than 20 percent in the second quarter, while import growth would also stay high due to surging domestic demand and rising import prices, said the bank in a report released on its website."Exports have returned to pre-crisis levels and imports have hit all-time highs after seasonal adjustments," it said.The report said China still faced deteriorating trade conditions with rising trade protectionism and the unstable global economic recovery.China's trade surplus stood at 196 billion U.S. dollars last year. March saw its first monthly trade deficit in six years, with exports at 112.11 billion U.S. dollars and imports surging 66 percent to 119.35 billion U.S. dollars.The country's macro-economy would continue to improve after a better-than-expected 11.9 percent economic growth in the first quarter, said the report, adding, "The Chinese economy has had a good start this year."Companies are more willing to invest, while the people are showing stronger consumption demand," it said.Investment structure had been improved in the first quarter, with private investment rising 30.4 percent year on year, exceeding the 21.1-percent growth of government or state-owned enterprise investment, said the bank.China's retail sales surged 17.9 percent year on year in the first quarter, and fixed assets investment rose 25.6 percent, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed.The bank also noted that "credit controls have seen initial results", as new yuan-denominated loans fell to 2.6 trillion yuan in the first quarter, 1.98 trillion yuan less than the corresponding period last year.The government has stated that the proactive fiscal policy and relatively easy monetary policy would continue this year, while repeatedly warning of assets bubbles, inflation risks and overheating industries.Soaring commodity prices were one of the government's major concerns, as the consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, rose 2.4 percent year on year in March, nearing the government's upper limit of 3 percent inflation this year.The bank said it would continue to strengthen liquidity management and keep an "appropriate" growth of money supply, so as to maintain stable prices and strike a balance between maintaining economic growth, adjusting the economic development model and avoiding inflation risks.
