SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A person was hit and killed following a crash in San Diego late Saturday night. CHP says a driver lost control and crashed on SR-94 just west of I-805 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. According to officers, the driver then got out of the car and started walking to an off-ramp when they were hit by another vehicle. The victim died at the scene, CHP says. The car that hit the victim fled the scene. At this time, it’s unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in either crash. 506

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A march involving attorneys and staff from the Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. is set to take place in downtown San Diego Monday afternoon.The Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders march will begin outside of the Federal Defenders of San Diego Inc. office on Broadway at 12:15 p.m. Participants will walk to the courtyard of the federal courthouse, across the street from the San Diego Hall of Justice on 330 Broadway.Once at the courtyard, longtime San Diego County public defender Geneviéve Jones-Wright will deliver remarks and “address the role public defenders play in our criminal justice system and the statewide call from California public defenders to end police violence,” according to a news release.The San Diego march is one of several involving public defenders and attorneys happening Monday across California.Other counties having their own Black Lives Matter To Public Defenders marches include Los Angeles County, Orange County, Santa Clara County, Contra Costa County, San Francisco County, and Alameda County. 1063

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A hands-on workforce training program is helping people with disabilities land jobs.Hands On @ Hyatt provides two weeks of on-the-job training at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. Students in the culinary training program get 100 hours of paid training, working with professional chefs.Kyle Lovell was a student in the program and ultimately landed a full-time job at the Hyatt as a cook."We're all here at the end of the day to work, to find a job, to make it on our own," said Lovell, "I hope everyone that has a disability knows they aren't alone."Lovell has a learning disability, but the program works with people ranging from physical disabilities to hearing impairment."I hope employers will see there are people out there with challenges that can work really hard and do a really good job," said Lovell.While unemployment hovers around 4 percent, it's twice as high for people with disabilities.The state-funded program is a partnership of Florida-based company Hands on Educational Services.Anyone interested in applying can learn more here. 1082

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of women is trying to appeal the decision by a judge to release the 'Bolder than Most' rapist, Alvin Quarles. Quarles is set to be released in Jacumba Hot Springs by Nov. 30. The women, including two of his victims, created a petition called Your Voice has Power. They are collecting signatures to be delivered to District Attorney Summer Stephan's office. Cynthia Medina and Mary Taylor were both assaulted by Quarles in the late 1980s. They are worried that he will re-offend when he's released. "He will re-offend. I fear for your daughter, your sister, your grandmother, your mother, your boyfriend, your son," said Medina. Judge David Gill ordered the 56-year-old's release at a hearing on October 12th. He will be forced to wear a GPS tracker. Quarles earned his nickname because authorities said he attacked women at knifepoint while they slept and often forced his victim's male partner to watch or participate in the sex crimes. Jacumba Hot Springs residents call the release outrageous, saying it's not the first time a sexual predator has been released into their community. "It's become the junkyard for these terrible criminals.
