SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Friday morning, SANDAG’s board will decide how to spend 0 million throughout San Diego County between roads, public transportation and other projects. According to a budget released by SANDAG, most of the funds will go towards transportation, not roads. The move has some throughout the county concerned that not enough will go toward roads in need of repair. “I'm pragmatic about it and I do worry about the fact that these tend to suck up all of the money and leave nothing left for highways,” said El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells.The concern comes after SANDAG announced “5 Big Moves.” The project focuses on the future of public transportation. Read all five points of the plan below: Complete CorridorsThe backbone of a complete transportation system that leverages technology, pricing, and connectivity to repurpose how both highways and local roads are used and managed. Complete Corridors would increase safety, capacity, and efficiency; provide dedicated space for high-speed transit and other pooled services; manage demand in real-time; and maximize use of existing roadways. Local roads are designed and operated to equally accommodate all users, including transit, cars, bikes, pedestrians, and commercial vehicles. Features may include dynamically managed curb space, transit amenities, bike facilities, pedestrian refuges, or smart intersection systems. Smart intersection systems would improve safety for all modes through use of sensors and alerts to vehicles and individuals, and could give transit priority treatments that make transit faster and more reliable. Wireless charging at parking facilities, intersections, and/or roadways will support future induction charging for zero-emission vehicles. Complete Corridors will provide connections to the Mobility Hubs network and infrastructure to support use of shared, on-demand Flexible Fleets. Transit LeapA complete network of high-capacity, high-speed, and high-frequency transit services that incorporates new transit modes and improves existing services. New high-speed services could include grade separated or tunneled services that span long segments with limited stops connecting major destinations. Potential improvements to existing transit lines include double or triple tracking, higher frequencies, dedicated lanes, and signal priorities managed through Complete Corridors. These routes will connect to Mobility Hubs and provide travelers a true alternative for traveling to work, home, and major destinations as fast or faster than driving. Transit services will feature better integration with other services for limited transfers with better timed connections, offer more individualized transit services, and transition to electric or alternative fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Mobility HubsPlaces of connectivity where a variety of travel options come together to deliver a seamless travel experience in the heart of the communities where people live, work, and play. Mobility Hubs surround high-speed transit in the Transit Leap and integrate with Complete Corridors to align with the network of smart, managed corridors. Supporting land uses that increase housing near transit and enhanced infrastructure for bikes and pedestrians will encourage more people to walk and/or bike. Flexible Fleets also are integrated and offer numerous shared mobility services that extend the reach to high-speed transit and improve access to an individual’s origin or destination. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Eateries in Ocean Beach say Memorial Day weekend is getting them back on top after a slow winter.A couple factors in play, nearly back to back storms and the closed pier. "Our numbers are still way above normal so we'll take it," South Beach Bar & Grille Bartender Philip Cullin said Friday and Saturday were great for business.Next door at Lighthouse Ice Cream, those sentiments were echoed.Sunday was a different story, clouds loomed overhead with sprinkles and rain in the evening, dampening the influx of customers. "It's really cold, there's not that many people out," 14-year-old birthday girl Bella said. She came out with friends and family to celebrate.Businesses thankful to see those customers, saying it's been tough through the slow winter months.Inside the bar, Cullin said they saw lots of business Sunday, "it comes in waves, you'll get like a mad lunch rush, everybody bombs in at the same time to get their fish tacos, and then they clear out mid afternoon and your locals come in."With the pier open, they're seeing even more people, "this area gets way more congested when people are chilling at the pier," Cullin said."I found out Thursday night the pier was opening on Friday and I knew I had to get here early and start making waffle cones, it was a busy day for us, we couldn't even find parking in the morning," Lighthouse Ice Cream Manager Robbie Valdivia said.They're hopeful Memorial Day will bring sunshine and another wave of customers."We actually had them for about two weeks now, a lot of tourists here from out of town, out of state, so it's been really really nice," Valdivia said, knowing it's the unofficial start of summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Health experts in San Diego County said Wednesday flu season appears to be at its end, according to the County News Center. The news came after the county released the latest flu numbers. So far this season, 341 people have died from the flu including two new deaths reported over the last week.Those who died ranged in age from one to 101.The high number of deaths this season is a result of an unusually severe flu season, but was also due to better reporting and tracking, County Health and Human Services reported.“It appears that we’re at the end of this flu season,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “However, people should continue to take precautions to avoid contracting the virus.”In total, more than 20,000 lab-confirmed flu cases were reported this flu season compared to just over 5,400 the previous year. 880
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Despite record unemployment levels in California, the state's economy keeps turning, partly on the backs of the small businesses that have been able to stay afloat. However, six months into the COVID-19 pandemic we’re seeing how some businesses that were forced to shut down to prevent the spread of the virus won't reopen."We've had to pivot and shift, almost call audibles in the middle of what's going on to try to keep our businesses open," said Derrick Banks, owner of Freshly Faded Barber Shop.Banks has been in business for about seven years.He said beyond the haircut, there's something special about the conversations that take place while at the shop."If you see my barber cape, it says ‘Love thy homies’ on it," Banks said. "I feel like every person that gets in my chair becomes a friend eventually."Banks said back in March when businesses were initially forced to close, it's those close conversations and connections to the community that took the biggest toll. That and trying to keep up with an ever-changing series of rules and health and safety standards."We've had to pivot back and forth between cutting hair outside, cutting hair inside, having these safety precautions," he said. "One day we're allowed to be opened, and the next day we're not."While Banks has been able to stay in business, he has only to look down the street to see others who didn't make it."Just in a two-mile radius of this shop, there have been two barbershops that I know of that have permanently closed," he said.Banks said there's no playbook for how to get a business through a pandemic. He understands the importance of small businesses in the community and believes those running them need to do what's best for them."I'm not in a position where I can hope for anything," he said. "I have to have a clear plan, but I am optimistic."The EconomyYou can find empty storefronts in cities across California. But what does it mean for the state's economy?"California is suffering like the rest of the country," said Alan Gin, an economics professor at the University of San Diego. "We had a surge in terms of our unemployment rate. It's come down but still much higher than before the pandemic."Gin said the service and leisure industries have been the hardest hit.According to the California Employment Development Department (EDD), the state's unemployment rate improved to 11.4 percent in August as the state's employers added 101,900 jobs.In July, the state's unemployment rate was up at 13.5 percent.The state agency says Leisure and Hospitality posted the largest industry job loss in August (-14,600), and 561,900 of the sector's 633,000 year-over job losses have occurred since March 2020.Despite the record unemployment, Gin said California has lot of high-tech and business service jobs that can work remotely. It means many higher-paying industries didn't have to shut down.His worry is about the growing financial inequality."It was already bad in this country, but now it's likely to be even worse as a result of this," Gin said.Gin also noted that help from the federal government and unemployment benefits paid out by the EDD has also helped keep California's economy turning.EDD said it processed more than 13 million claims and distributed more than billion over the course of the pandemic.It's important to note last week, the EDD announced it's taking a two-week reset period. The goal, they explained, is to clear the massive backlog of unemployment claims that have been filed over the past six months. An EDD strike team found 600,000 California workers still haven't received the benefits they applied for.Reporter Adam Racusin asked Gin if California's economy can survive another six months of the current conditions."I think an important aspect is whether or not another stimulus package can be passed," Gin said. “I think some more relief is needed. The worry is that with the cutoff of unemployment that the people at the lower end, who are being kept afloat, are going to fall off a cliff." 4047
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - HazMat teams responded to a fire station in North Park after a suspicious package was found outside the station, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official.Fire crews found the package by Station 14's front door around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when they returned from a call.Fire officials told 10News the package was a taped-up cardboard box with writing on it that made it appear dangerous. Some of the words were misspelled.The hazmat and bomb personnel set up a perimeter around the station, blocking off 32nd Street and Lincoln Avenue by about a block in each direction.The bomb squad x-rayed the package, determined that it was not dangerous, and reopened the street around 5:45 p.m.The package was filled with aluminum flux and trash, according to a tweet from San Diego Fire-Rescue.At about 3p on Sunday someone left this box at SDFD North Park station on 32nd St. The bomb team was called to ID the contents - aluminum flux and some trash.
