SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - — San Diegans are not allowing the pandemic to dampen their holiday spirit. This much was apparent at the beginning of Taste of December Nights.Within moments of its opening Friday, a line of cars streamed down Park Boulevard, waiting for a chance to order food from about a dozen vendors lined up at Inspiration Point in Balboa Park. "We've been going to December nights every year, but we didn't want to miss it this year," said Jasper Pascual, of National City, who came with his girlfriend Wendee. "It's something new, something interesting."The pandemic has upended decades of tradition, including December Nights in Balboa Park. Thousands normally pack the event in Balboa Park, enjoying holiday decorations, museums and food. This year, the event is a drive through for food vendors, with participants required to stay in their cars and wear masks. Pedestrians, bicyclists and scooter riders are not allowed. "This event obviously is re-imagined, it's different, but again I think it's the type of event that I think is just what some folks will need," Mayor Kevin Faulconer said as he kicked off the event. San Diegans appeared to agree, waiting in stop-and-go traffic to get into one of two ordering lines. A worker from one of the eateries comes to the window, takes an order, and eventually brings the food. Options included coffee, mini donuts, Cajun and kettle corn."Just tell people be super, super patient, bring some music, relax, have fun, enjoy it, because it's going to be a while," said Hellen Silva, who came with her husband and mother. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Coronado gym is taking on a novel concept, devising a bracket-style challenge involving acts of kindness.Founder Nick Merrill grew up on Whidbey Island, north of Seattle, Washington and giving is in his blood. Merrill said his dad was a founder of Hearts and Hammers, a non-profit that helps build homes for those in need.After college he met his wife, who shared his love of fitness. "I met my wife through working out, we started running marathons together and ended up doing some charity runs where we ran across Washington State where we earned a bunch of money for some charities in Africa, built a school, built some wells," Merrill said.Naturally when they opened the doors of Sweat Equity in Bellevue six years ago, they wanted to marry their gym with good deeds. They opened their Coronado gym about two years ago.Every year they have challenges to engage their members. Each March, they play off of the NCAA's March Madness bracket competition.Each team of four earns points through workouts and "each round will have a specific random act of kindness that everyone will do," Merrill said that will earn them points as well.In years past, it's been anything from buying a cup of coffee for someone, to putting change in an expired parking meter. One year they flexed their giving muscles pretty hard, "we brought in over 2,000 lbs of food basically in one day." Merrill said that was for Northwest Harvest in Washington.This year they hope is their biggest year yet."It's so rewarding, it makes you feel so good and it makes the person you helped out feel so good," Merrill said.The competition starts March 16 and ends April 1, with the winner receiving a trophy for their efforts. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former La Jolla restaurant owner convicted of raping multiple women was sentenced on Tuesday to 40 years in prison.On a live stream to the courtroom while sitting in jail, Daniel Dorado was read his term after several women gave their victim impact statements.The former owner of Voce Del Mare was found guilty last December on 20 counts related to rape and sexual assault of four victims who were unconscious and intoxicated. ABC10 News broke the story two years ago when he was charged with drugging and raping women, sometimes at his restaurant.Fighting back tears on Tuesday, one victim described her trauma from meeting Dorado after answering an ad on Craigslist for a hostess position. "Years after the assault, I still don't feel safe going to job interviews in-person, alone. I don't feel safe to do outdoor activities alone. I can't tolerate being around men. Not even family," she stated."He is an evil individual," said another woman who added, "I simply went on a date with him and ended up getting sexually assaulted by him for hours in a hotel room where I was unconscious."One woman who was named as a victim defended Dorado on Tuesday and said that she was even friends with him. She accused detectives of manipulating her to testify against her will and appear confused about a possible assault. She told the judge, "Your honor, Mr. Dorado never raped me. I never went to the police. I never filed a police report. In fact, I declined a restraining order against Mr. Dorado and I told detectives that I did not want to press charges."Dorado addressed the courtroom and denied any wrongdoing. He added, "I have spoken the truth since the very first day that this all began. I did not skip town. I did not make faces to the accusers. I am still in shock by what has happened." He maintains his innocence and has said that every sexual encounter was consensual."The total term of imprisonment is 40 years. I don't mind saying [that] I believe this is the maximum I can impose under the law," the judge told the courtroom. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A crucial part of the fight to end food insecurity depends on community donations. And the most significant impact often comes from a group of strangers that come together to donate, volunteer, and distribute. “I want to say the excess food we have is maybe 75 pounds to 100 pounds every couple of weeks,” said Adam Sapinoso. Sapinoso works for National Food Group, a wholesale food service distributor in San Diego. From time to time, his inventory exceeds his client's needs leaving him with additional food that he doesn’t need. That food is often tossed out. “It was just hard seeing that much food being thrown away, especially when you’re the one physically throwing it in the dumpster,” said Sapinoso. Looking for a solution, he turned to Feeding San Diego’s app called Meal Connect. This app connects restaurants and companies with Feeding San Diego volunteers. Those volunteers pick up excess food from companies and restaurants when it is most convenient for the company. Donate now to Month of a Million MealsThe volunteer then heads to one of Feeding San Diego’s distribution locations to drop off the donations. The food is then unpacked and sorted out and distributed to the community. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 63-year-old man was hospitalized after being stabbed in Sherman Heights Saturday night.The stabbing happened on the 2200 block of Imperial Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.Authorities say the man was arguing with a 19-year-old when the teen stabbed him in the ribs below his armpit.RELATED: PB man stabbed six times, suspect apprehendedAfter the stabbing, the suspect fled the scene, police say.
