KUNMING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has called for more efforts to fight Yunnan's worst drought in 60 years when visiting the province in southwestern China.He urged local authorities to ensure water supply for urban and rural residents and for agricultural uses.He also asked local authorities to take more measures to limit the spread of forest fires.Hui visited several rural households to know if they had enough water. He also inspected affected crops, reservoirs and forests during his visit to Yunnan from Wednesday to Friday.Yunnan's drought has resulted in water shortages for locals, livestock and crops.The dry spell started in the autumn 2009 and has also hit neighboring Guizhou Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.The seriousness, duration, areas affected and losses are rarely seen in history, the Ministry of Civil Affairs (MCA) said late Friday in a statement on its website.The ministry urged all affected regions to "take all possible means" to minimize the damages of the drought.The ministry also asked local civil affairs authorities of the four hardest-hit regions to report, on a 10-day basis, the number of people affected by the drought, people suffering from drinking water shortage, and people in need of government aid.

TAIYUAN, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tens of thousands of people in north China's Shanxi Province flooded onto the streets Saturday afternoon and stayed until Sunday morning after earthquake rumors spread in the coal-rich region recently hit by a 4.8-magnitude quake.Major streets, parks and squares in cities like Jinzhong, Luliang, Changzhi, Yangquan and Taiyuan filled with anxious people and private cars. In rural areas, many villagers went out in the open air with their personal property, such as TVs.The Shanxi Provincial Seismological Bureau issued an urgent statement Sunday morning, asking residents to keep calm and not to believe in the quake rumor."According to the quake forecast regulation, only the provincial government can release quake forecast information. Other organizations and individuals are not authorized to do so," the statement said.The bureau is using TV, radio, Internet and text messages to clarify the situation and calm the residents.Meanwhile, local police are investigating the incident and trying to find out the source of the rumor.On Jan. 24, a 4.8-magnitude quake struck Yuncheng City in Shanxi.

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of all eight Chinese police officers buried under a collapsed building in the Haiti quake had been found as of early Sunday morning Beijing time, the Ministry of Public Security said.     The first body was found at 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16 Beijing time after more than 80 hours of search and rescue work, and the other seven were retrieved from 10:42 p.m. to 3:56 a.m. Jan. 17 under the joint efforts of the Chinese rescue team, the Chinese peacekeeping force in Haiti and several foreign rescue teams, the ministry's emergency response work team announced Sunday. BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The amendment to the Electoral Law adopted by the National People's Congress (NPC), China's parliament, marked an important step to improve the people's congress system and advance socialist democracy, the People's Daily said in an editorial to be published Monday.The NPC concluded its annual session here Sunday after adopting an amendment to the Electoral Law, which grants equal representation in legislative bodies to rural and urban people.The amendment could better demonstrate equality among people, regions and ethnic groups, and promote social harmony, the editorial said.The editorial also spoke highly of the NPC session as an important meeting in the crucial era for China to deal with the global financial crisis, maintain steady and relatively fast economic development, and accelerate transformation of the economic growth mode.The NPC endorsed the government work report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao, which highlights scientific development, transformation of the economic growth mode, innovation and improvement of people's livelihood, the editorial said.The editorial hailed the achievements of the NPC Standing Committee in 2009 and called for the NPC to make intensified efforts in legislation and supervision work and keep in closer contact with the people in 2010, the last year for the implementation of the country's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010).
