SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An annual reading program by United Way of San Diego County helped nearly 500 students in the City Heights neighborhood improve their literacy skills, the nonprofit announced today.The "Readers in the Heights" summer reading initiative included 479 students from elementary schools in the City Heights area, a sharp increase from the program's 40 participants just two years ago. The program is intended to combat "summer slide," when students lose literacy gains they made during the school year. According to United Way, 86 percent of students assessed at the beginning and end of the program maintained or improved their reading comprehension."We use proven assessment tools to measure impact and they show that these literacy practices have made significant progress in student reading," United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Nancy Sasaki said. "These practices help close learning gaps and open new worlds by creating happy, excited and confident readers."United Way partnered with the San Diego Unified School District, the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Police Department, PrimeTime SAY San Diego and Words Alive to produce the program.Members of the literacy group Words Alive trained members of the program's staff on how to implement evidence-based reading practices across the program's seven sites, including four elementary schools in and around City Heights. The students totaled nearly 10,000 hours of literacy learning during the 20-day program and received a total of 900 free books."Research shows that children who don't have access to books, camps or enrichment programs during the summer recess can lose more than two months of reading skills and can fall behind almost three months in their learning," said San Diego Unified School District Superintendent Cindy Marten. "Each year, the Readers in the Heights literacy initiative works to increase summer learning opportunities, and with the help of partners and volunteers, we are able to make a huge impact over four weeks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled from officers near Hoover High School Wednesday led police on a meandering, roughly 45-minute road chase, running stoplights and driving the wrong way on one-way streets before pulling over near Lindbergh Field and making a failed attempt to escape on foot.The man drove off when patrol personnel approached him at about 12:15 p.m. to check on his welfare in response to a report that he appeared distraught while sitting in a white Chevrolet Malibu parked in the 4400 block of El Cajon Boulevard in the Teralta East area, according to San Diego police.The fleeing motorist, whose name was not immediately available, traveled over various mid-city streets before heading west on University Avenue through City Heights, North Park and Hillcrest.Early on in the chase, the driver ran over a spike strip laid out by police in his path, winding up with at least one flat tire on his car, Officer Tony Martinez said.After crisscrossing streets near Scripps Mercy Hospital, the man -- who appeared to be talking on a cellphone throughout the pursuit -- headed south on Fifth Avenue, driving against light traffic on the one-way northbound thoroughfare.Reaching downtown San Diego, the motorist crisscrossed the busy urban center for about 15 minutes, often driving at slow speeds, blowing through red lights and traveling in the wrong direction on one-way streets as police cruisers and an SDPD helicopter tailed him and officers placed more spike strips ahead of him.Eventually, he proceeded west through the Cortez Hill and Little Italy districts on B Street, then north on Pacific Highway, at one point driving onto a sidewalk to evade the pursuing police personnel.Just after 1 p.m., the fleeing man drove into a car-rental lot near San Diego International Airport, pulled over, jumped out of his vehicle and ran off into a parking garage.Officers gave chase and got the man into custody following a brief struggle, police said.No injuries were reported. 1998

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A robbery at a Tierrasanta credit union branch led to one arrest, police said Friday.A man entered a Navy Federal Credit Union branch in the 10600 block of Tierrasanta Boulevard at 1:26 p.m. and presented the teller with a demand note, San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster said.The teller complied with the suspect's demands and gave him an undetermined amount of money.Officers headed to the scene and, after a search, were able to find and detain the suspect, a 57-year-old man, on Porto Court in a nearby residential neighborhood, according to San Diego Police Sgt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Thursday publicly identified a 21-year-old man who was killed when the sports car he was driving crashed off a South Bay freeway connector.Jose Cruz Perez of Logan Heights lost control of the blue Nissan 350Z coupe while trying to merge onto eastbound state Route 54 from northbound Interstate 5 in National City at high speed shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Alerted by a witness who saw Perez's vehicle veer off the connector and plunge down a steep embankment just south of the Sweetwater River, California Highway Patrol officers searched the area but were unable to find the car or driver.About four hours after the accident, a worker at a shipbuilding yard alongside the freeway ramp found the wrecked Nissan in a mud pond with Perez's body partially ejected from the driver's side door, the CHP reported. 910
