Days after President Donald Trump announced he was cutting off negotiations for a new COVID-19 relief bill until after the 2020 election, Trump said Friday morning that negotiations for a new bill "are moving along" and that he wanted to "go Big!"In addition, The Washington Post reports that White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow has "approved a revised package" to present to House Democrats. Kudlow told reporters that "developments are positive" for more stimulus. However, moments after Trump's tweet, The Associated Press reported that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell thought it was "unlikely" a new stimulus bill would be passed before the election. According to the AP, McConnell said negotiation participants were "elbowing for political advantage.Friday's announcement is a direct about-face from earlier in the week. On Tuesday, Trump tweeted that he had instructed Senate Republicans to cut off negotiations for further COVID-19 stimulus and instead focus full-time on confirming his Supreme Court nominee. At the time, Trump blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for seeking too much relief, saying that Democrats' offer including funds that were "in no way related to COVID-19" and would be used to " bailout poorly run, high crime, Democrat States." 1277

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed an executive order granting convicted felons the right to vote, ending Iowa’s place as the only remaining state to broadly deny voting rights to felons. The Republican governor signed the order Wednesday after promising in June that she would take such action.Reynolds says she’ll continue to press the Legislature to pass a constitutional amendment restoring felon voting rights, which couldn't be reversed by a future governor. She proposed that last year but couldn’t get Republican state senators to support it.The executive order restores the right to vote for Iowans who have already completed their felony sentences. It requires residents to complete any prison, probation, parole, or special sentence. The order excludes automatic restoration for more serious crimes, such as murder, requiring those people to seek individual restoration but does not require repayment of victim restitution before they could vote."Today we take a significant step forward in acknowledging the importance of redemption, second chances and the need to address inequalities in our justice system,” said Reynolds. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of society and the free republic in which we live. When someone serves their sentence, they should have their right to vote restored automatically. We’re going to continue to advocate for a constitutional amendment and make this major milestone permanent. Getting things done involves coming to the table and I want to thank the broad and diverse coalition who has been working on this with me for years.” 1609

DENVER — Twenty years ago, Gary Jugert found love at a music shop."I bought a ukulele at a secondhand store and back then there weren’t any books or classes so I had to teach myself how to play ukulele. It turns out it’s a very fun and exciting instrument that you can share with other people," Jugert said.He began teaching lessons and even opened up a ukulele repair shop, though he says he was not a naturally musical person."I didn't start music seriously until I was 35," he said.Still, in 2012, Jugert created the Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra. It was a huge hit until the pandemic silenced its 100 or so musicians in March."We instantaneously could not meet anymore and so several of us decided, hey, what are our alternatives for getting the group together?" Jugert said. "And we tried all of the various platforms. The problem was there’s a tiny bit of a lag on Zoom classes and because we play instrumental — ensemble music — it doesn’t work without post-editing. I said, 'Well, why don’t we meet on YouTube?'"That is how this silver lining came to be. Each morning, Jugert heads to his spare bedroom where people from all over the world log on for his lessons. He said 90% of the people who log on are 55 and older, and 80% are women. He's become such a hit, he now teaches six 45-minute classes every day."I just love it," Jugert said. His students say this is about so much more than making music."It’s just such a good social outlet. I retired a year and a half ago so I don’t see my work friends anymore," said student, Jeri Sampson. "It’s been a real good social thing for me."This may not be the orchestra the musicians envisioned, but thanks to Jugert, it's become everything they need."People need something to do right now. They need quality education. Musically, it’s hard to get right now. I think with the challenges music teachers are facing in music education, why not do it?" Jugert said. This story originally reported by Molly Hendrickson on TheDenverChannel.com. 1999
