They did have opinions on the act itself.Former soccer athlete Lexi Phillips, who is a Sophomore, said it was like a slap in the face, "colleges, when you're applying, definitely ask if you're an athlete or not because they recognize how much work it is and so people who haven't been doing that and saying 'oh well I've been doing that' just to get into an elite school definitely isn't fair and isn't fair for someone who's been trying even harder to get in and they take their spot."Other students like Missica Derhalli, who is a Freshman, say it makes them sick, "I really can't believe that we would be doing something like that. I picked this college particularly because I felt like it was a good, holistic place for me to be and I was going to be getting a truly good education.""Just knowing that there are people who aren't putting in effort and I spent 13 years of my education just working so hard and these people aren't working at all and it's just it's very disheartening," Missica added. She volunteered more than 1,000 hours helping special needs children and has a merit scholarship.On the other side of the spectrum, some students weren't surprised at all. "This is basically like a smaller version of my high school and I saw this stuff like this happening there so this is all somewhat normal for me as bad as that sounds," Sophomore Jacob Asher said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Unions were the big winners as the San Diego Airport Authority decided to require contractors to enter into a project labor agreement in a 5-3 vote. PLA’s entail that unions will not strike and the airport will in turn run all the work through labor unions. Opposition to the PLA says they are worried the project will be even more costly to accommodate union dues and that non-union local workers will be excluded from the job. “It’s completely unfair,” said Steve Stroder, who represents” [they] are being told they can’t work on a project in San Diego.” Unions say their track record of completing marquee jobs on time like the county courthouse and under budget speaks for itself. “I mean we’ve proven that we can do this work,” said Keith Maddox of the San Diego Imperial Counties Labor Council, ”our workers are local.” The vote will be made after several hours of public testimony. 916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Troops will soon arrive at several bases throughout San Diego County to provide support U.S. Customs and Border Protection as the migrant caravan approaches.According to the United States Northern Command, troops are being sent to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton, Naval Air Facility El Centro, Naval Base Coronado, Naval Base San Diego and Naval Base Point Loma.The Pentagon confirmed Wednesday that as many as 7,000 troops are being deployed to three states for support, though President Donald Trump told reporters as many as 15,000 could be sent.According to ABC News, 15,000 is roughly the number of troops deployed to Afghanistan and three times the number in Iraq."As far as the caravan is concerned our military is out, we have about 5,000-8 (thousand), we'll go up to anywhere between 10 (thousand) and 15,000 military personnel on top of border patrol, ICE and everybody else on the border," Trump told reporters Wednesday.Related Stories 997

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— As Governor Jerry Brown visited Ground Zero for the Camp Fire in Paradise, a San Diego woman is doing the same. Corine Finnigan has more than 100 family members who lived in Paradise, and is now driving a truckload of supplies and cash to help them. Her adult niece, Christine Blackburn told 10news about her harrowing escape through the flames. While the fire was inching closer to her car, she shot video. In it, you can hear her trying to comfort her four and six-year-old children, sitting frightened in the backseat. But this escape story is not unique to Blackburn. In fact, her aunt Cynthia Watts also narrowly escaped the fire.“That was the most terrifying experience of my life,” Watts said.The taxi driver lived on the East side of town, where the fire began. Immediately, she packed her car and drove south. Minutes later, she was in bumper to bumper traffic. "I don't think we moved an entire inch in an entire hour,” Watts recalled.She tried driving on the Northbound lanes on Skyway Street, but the jam never let up. So she abandoned her car and ran for her life."I just started hoofing it,” she said. Watts walked and walked, passing rows of cars on the town's main road. She was even offered rides from drivers stuck on the road but refused. That was until she heard a co-worker screaming to get into his truck. The next thing she knew, they were in Chico, with absolutely nothing.“Thank you, God. I got out of there, in the nick [of time],” she said. This escape story is also not unique to Watts. In fact, she has nearly 100 extended family members in the small city, all who are now homeless."They have nothing,” Finnigan said. Finnigan is Watt's youngest sister of thirteen children. While she moved to San Diego a few years ago, Finnigan spent most of her life in Paradise. This year, she and her husband Bryan are spending their 22nd wedding anniversary, driving up supplies to her family.“We look like hoarders now, with bags and bags and bags of clothes, shoes, towel, and toys,” Finnigan said. With the help of her friends and co-workers, she was able to collect the donations, including ,000 in cash for the survivors in the Camp Fire. One miracle, Watts said, was that everyone in their family managed to escape in time.  2336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether its the search for something warm or just a turn to the comforts of home, this past winter gave San Diegans more pause for certain cuisines.Food ordering platform Grubhub looked at food delivery trends from Dec. 22, 2018, to March 13, 2019, to analyze San Diego's winter food trends by users compared to the rest of the year.Leading the pack were bean burritos saw a 362 percent increase in popularity during that time span, more than 100 percent more than the next most popular dish, according to Grubhub.RELATED: Inventive eggs Benedict, dumpling soup highlight San Diego's foodie scene on Yelp listGyro wraps experienced a 258 percent increase in orders, while vegetable ramen orders shot up 222 percent. Many of the most popular items ordered were soups.Heading into spring, the app went further and looked at orders over the spring 2017 and 2018 to predict what San Diegans would likely order.
