SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A verdict has been reached in the trial of a former Yuma Police officer accused of raping his then-wife's cousin in 2017.Jurors found 34-year-old Jared Elkins guilty of four felony counts, including forcible rape and sexual penetration by force. Elkins was found not guilty, however, on four similar counts involving an intoxicated victim."I'm extremely pleased with this jury and their verdicts," said Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox."The fact that he was a law enforcement officer and carried a weapon was significant for the victim in this case she believed that he would carry through with these threats and why she was so afraid of him," argued Fox.Elkins was taken into custody without bail following the reading of the verdict. The group had been out to dinner, then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home. That night a 23-year-old woman, related by marriage, says Elkins forced her to have sex while other family members were asleep in the house. Elkins claimed during testimony this month that the sex was consensual and the rape charges were made out of guilt.Following the encounter, the woman says she ran to her mother's room and both escaped out of a window. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- About two dozen protesters rallied against 5G technology at Waterfront Park Wednesday. The group says increased radiation is extremely harmful and can lead to seizures and heart failure.The city of San Diego accounted their 5G partnership with Verizon in April. The deal adds 0 million of infrastructure including new equipment cells on city-owned light poles. Police say the increased smart technology can help increase safety. Protesters today disagree."There’s no safety testing for this plan at all," said Susan Brinchman with the Center for Electrosmog Prevention. "I know why they didn’t do the testing, because there’s no way to safely implement this. Scientists are beginning to associate it with the development of cancer."A New York Times article released this week says 5G is actually safe. The article cites a Temple University researcher who says," 5G emissions, if anything, should be safer than previous generations,”.Mayor Kevin Faulconer says the agreement with Verizon will not only enhance cell service but also keep communities safer and cut costs for taxpayers. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Valencia Park dog owner is looking for the person that took his dog from his front yard Tuesday morning. Jayden Ryan’s five-month-old french bulldog, Greyson, was last seen playing in their driveway. His security camera shows Greyson walking over to the fence, but then the camera jumps to footage of a man wearing a hood walking away, and he appeared to be carrying the dog in his arms. Ryan says there were about three to four minutes of missing footage, that might have shown the man’s face, as well as how he ended up with his dog. He says the camera company told him there was an issue on the way the video uploaded. However, a neighbor saw the incident. He told Ryan, as well as 10News, that he saw the hooded man reach over the fence, pet the dog for about a minute, then grab him and walk away. The security footage picked up audio of the neighbor yelling at the hooded stranger and then chasing after him. “(My neighbor) says he tried to run after him, but he is 54 years old. He was no match for him, so he ended up getting away,” Ryan said. Neighbors said they recently saw the man in the neighborhood. Ryan says French bulldogs are expensive so they can be enticing to thieves. He would be surprised if he were casing the neighborhood. Ryan is putting up fliers, hoping someone will have information about Greyson, or the man in the video. “They didn’t just steal my dog, they stole the happiness from me,” Ryan said. San Diego Police say no suspects have been identified at this time and no arrests have been made. 1561

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego researcher is looking into whether social media affects the teenage brain the same way as marijuana.Dr. Kara Bagot, a child psychiatrist and assistant professor at the University of California San Diego, believes her findings could change how medical professionals view adolescents' usage of various social media. “Kids keep using social media even in the face of negative consequences,” said Dr. Bagot, “and that’s what we see with drug usage as well.” Bagot’s team will scan 60 teens’ brains as they look at images from social media and then pictures of marijuana. “No one will be smoking for this study,” added Bagot, “we’re not that progressive.” They are still compiling results and recruiting more teenagers for the study, but anticipate having it complete by summer. The study is a part of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) initiative, a nationwide effort tracking more than 12,000 children across a decade. 969

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego man with Down syndrome met the man who saved his life by donating a kidney for the first time Wednesday. James Wellman met his donor, Paul Williams, for the first time after having his life-saving surgery.Wellman was diagnosed with Down syndrome when he was born, and in 2017 his kidneys were functioning at only 12 percent.His family grew concerned after he was rejected for a transplant by several programs in Southern California. 477
