(KGTV) - Residents of a small mobile home park across the street from the proposed Newland Sierra development, Measure B on the March ballot, say they fear a "yes" vote to approve the project could do irreparable damage to their community.Deer Springs Oaks is made up of 32 mobile homes off Deer Springs Road, directly across the street from the Newland Sierra site. That plan, if voters approve, would allow for around 2,100 new homes, along with open space and infrastructure changes. Residents of Deer Springs Oaks, funded by the nearby Golden Door Spa, have been making the case to voters that Measure B will make a bad traffic situation worse and create a dangerous trap in a wildfire zone. But they also worry that the project could have a more direct impact on their homes. The building of Newland Sierra would require the widening of Deer Springs Road, as well as changes to the nearby interchange with I-15. While Newland Sierra developers say these will not affect the mobile home park, the residents say they are not getting any guarantees from Newland Sierra, the County, or CalTrans."We don't know what they're going to do, how they're going to do it," said resident Georgeann Higgins. "They're so arrogant as to not inform us. These are our homes." Lawyers representing many of the residents obtained plans for some of the alternatives being considered by CalTrans. At least two would cause major changes to Deer Springs Oaks, including the possibility of residents losing property and a road being moved to go through the center of the complex."They impact the park big time," said resident Tony Eason. "They would destroy the park."A spokesperson from Newland Sierra told 10News that the maps being used by the residents are outdated. He sent 10News at statement: “This is just another desperate attempt by the Golden Door Spa and its army of lawyers to try to confuse and scare voters. This alternative was one of more than a dozen road improvement alternatives that was studied. It was ultimately rejected by CalTrans and is no longer an option. The real truth is that Measure B will create affordably priced homes for working families with open space, parks and trails - a better choice than the current General Plan that permits a two million square foot mega-commercial development, mansions and parking lots." Ethan Couch, known for his "affluenza" defense in his deadly drunk driving case, was released from a Texas jail Monday after serving nearly two years behind bars for violating his probation.Couch, 20, first made headlines as a teenager when he was sentenced to probation for a drunken driving crash that killed four people and seriously injured two others.Prosecutors in that 2013 case sought 20 years in jail, but Couch received no prison time after a psychologist testified that Couch was a victim of "affluenza," a product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for him.The decision by the juvenile court judge to put him on probation for 10 years outraged victims' families and anti-drunk driving advocates.In 2015, Couch violated the terms of his probation and fled to Mexico with his mother, Tonya Couch. So back then, we could get traveling nurses, we could get registry nurses, we could hire more nurses locally," Van Gorder said. "Today, this is a national situation and we cannot recruit travelers, we cannot recruit registry nurses, and unfortunately, a number of our healthcare providers are also getting sick."Van Gorder said the county has 24 staffed ICU beds left, out of about 670 available. He added that as hospitals get full and resources are strained, the type of care for anyone needing hospital care will change to crisis care.The top two floors of the Escondido hospital have been set up to serve as an FMS site. The site could take in patients from other county hospitals that become overwhelmed, Dr. Omar Khawaja, the Chief Medical Officer for Palomar Health, told ABC 10News a few weeks ago."It could be beds that we would offload some of the less sick patients from other systems into there so they can handle the sicker patients; we don’t have a solid plan for it yet," he said.California's cumulative ICU bed capacity hit 1.1% on Wednesday, with the Southern California region at 0%. Three other regions were also under the state's regional stay-at-home orders activated after a region dips under 15% ICU capacity.San Diego County reported 348 coronavirus ICU cases on Wednesday and an additional 2,598 COVID-19 cases.Van Gorder said the county and hospitals project that hospitalizations will continue to grow and peak on Jan. 10, 2021, with about 1,827 patients, and ICU cases will peak on Jan. 11, with about 483 patients."Today, the governor announced the federal medical station at Palomar Medical Center is going to be activated.
