SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The statistics for foster kids aging out of the system are grim. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, after reaching the age of 18, 20 percent of the children who were in foster care will become instantly homeless. And there's a less than a 3 percent chance for children who have aged out of foster care to earn a college degree at any point in their life.San Diego nonprofit Just in Time for Foster Youth (JIT) is doing its part to prevent young people here from becoming a statistic. "When you turn 18 a lot of times the foster parents say here is a few dollars and you're on your own, there's no one to help you out," said Ivan Chavez, who was in the foster system from age 7 to 17.Growing up, he didn't have many positive role models. "For me, I never went to high school, and I barely went to middle school."But his journey brought him to JIT, where he now works as a full-time employee. JIT's My First Home (MFH) program helps former foster youth furnish and move into their new living space, creating a foundation for stable housing.Once every month, youth participants involved in the program have the chance to shop at the MFH Distribution Center, providing participants housing essentials for free, such as furniture, electronics, linens, and appliances. "They come in through the front door they're like you have all this stuff, and it's for me? They feel special, you know?" said Chavez.Chavez went from once living on the streets to now pursuing a master's degree. "If I saw my 15-year-old self, I would say everything is going to be ok. You're going to grow up, and you're going to do good and hopefully change people's lives," said Chavez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of children and their families enjoyed a Christmas miracle Saturday, as Toys for Joy delivered smiles across the county.About 8,000 - 9,000 people made their way through the lines outside four locations packed with toys as part of the event, at Lincoln High School, Cajon Valley Middle School, Castle Park High School, and Guajome Park Academy in Vista.At Lincoln High School, some families camped out for the event, waking up to toys and more generous donations. Every child under the age of 11 will walk away with a brand new toy. Families got their own holiday miracle, as other stations offer gently used clothing and also bring home groceries.Toys for Joy has been a free community event for 23 years and is hosted by The Rock Church. 776

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three San Diego County schools have been recognized as 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The award honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools. Aviara Oaks Elementary School in Carlsbad, Del Mar Hills Academy in Del Mar and Torrey Pines Elementary School in San Diego were all honored with the award. “Congratulations to these schools that have tremendous programs dedicated to, and invested in, creating state-of-the-art learning and teaching environments,” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said. “This recognition is well-deserved, and special thanks go to the educators and the school communities that meet students’ unique needs in order for all of their students to reach their full potential.”Schools are recognized based on school-wide student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three years ago Former San Francisco 49er’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the National Anthem. It started during the 2016 preseason games. The first three games he sat on the bench and then in a game against the San Diego Chargers, he took his first knee during the National Anthem. On Wednesday, Kaepernick recognized the three year anniversary by taking to his Twitter account saying, “Today marks the three year anniversary of the first time I protested systemic oppression. I continue to work and stand with the people in our fight for liberation.” In October 2017, Kaepernick filed a Collusion Grievance against the NFL and team owners In February 2018, they settled the case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location.
