Federal authorities are investigating after officials in Massachusetts confirm that a ballot drop box in Boston was set on fire early Sunday morning.According to WCVB-TV in Boston, a ballot drop box out front of the Boston Public Library's main branch in Copley Square was set ablaze around 4 a.m. ET on Sunday morning. Crews eventually extinguished the fire with water.According to WCVB, an "incendiary device" was used to start the fire. WBTS-TV reports that the FBI is investigated in the incident."For the next several weeks, it is a top priority of our offices to help maintain the integrity of the election process in Massachusetts by aggressively enforcing federal election laws," the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts said in a joint statement.Boston Mayor Marty Walsh and Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin also both condemned the incident in a joint statement.“What happened in the early hours of this morning to the ballot drop box in Copley Square is a disgrace to democracy, a disrespect to the voters fulfilling their civic duty, and a crime,” the statement read. “Our first and foremost priority is maintaining the integrity of our elections process and ensuring transparency and trust with our voters, and any effort to undermine or tamper with that process must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. We ask voters not to be intimidated by this bad act, and remain committed to making their voices heard in this and every election.”Officials later determined that there were 122 ballots inside the drop box at the time of the wire. Of those ballots, 87 were legible and able to processed. Thirty-five ballots were damaged, and WBTS reported that "up to 10" cannot be counted.Officials say any Massachusetts voter who dropped off their ballot at the library between 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday and 4 a.m. ET on Sunday should check the status of their ballot on the state's tracking website or contact the city's Elections Department.The incident comes just over a week after a ballot box in southern California was set on fire in an apparent act of arson. 2109

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Sheriff's Deputies are on the lookout for the man who jumped out of the bushes and confronted an Encinitas man with a rifle. The attack happened Friday morning on Fortuna Ranch Road when the victim was in his driveway. A neighbor tells 10News the man popped out of the bushes wearing a ski mask and camouflage clothing. He then pointed a rifle at the victim, threatening to rob or shoot him.  Deputies say, somehow, the victim was able to run to his neighbor's home and call 911. The gunman got away before law enforcement arrived, but it's unclear if he ran or drove away. With the gunman still at large, some neighbors are concerned for their safety. Crime Stoppers is offering a ,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — The man charged with killing a 55-year-old woman as she left bible study last year has been sentenced.Dionicio Torrez Jr., 25, was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the March 7, 2017, shooting of Catherine Kennedy in Escondido. The judge also gave Torrez Jr. an extra 35 years to life in prison for attempted murder of rival gang members. ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV) -- Friends and family celebrated the survival of 14-year-old Keane Webre-Hayes at a community paddle-out event. The teenager was attacked by a great white shark at Beacon's Beach one year ago this month. The line between life and death is so thin for Keane."People come up to me and say, 'hey what's that from'?" Keane said as he pointed at the large scars on this left cheek, ear, and neck. Last September, the then 13-year-old was bitten by a great white shark while lobster diving at Beacon's Beach. "I swam 70 yards to a kayak with basically no arm," Keane said. He screamed for help toward a few kayakers in the distance. That is when he met Matthew Ephron, who helped him get to shore. "He did most of the work, and we just got him in so that he wouldn't be out there forever," Ephron said. Doctors said Keane lost half of the blood in his body. But 1,000 stitches later, the boy survived. And for the last year, doctors, trainers, therapists, and teachers helped Keane find his new normal."We honestly couldn't have gone through it without the support of the community," Keane's mother, Ellie Hayes, said. "The hugs, the love, the gifts, the support."So to say thank you, Keane's family hosted a paddle-out at Moon Light State Beach to honor his survival. "Without them, I would not be able to move my arm," Keane said. "I probably would not be who I am today without them."Keane has made incredible strides. From being bedridden for weeks, he now plays in a club beach volleyball team. Family and friends said Saturday's paddle-out is a celebration of life and proof of Keane's incredible resilience. "I definitely want people to know that I can do things, and also if I can do that, you can do that if you put your mind to it," Keane said. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — An arrest has been made in connection with an Escondido house fire this week where a man was found unresponsive and later died.Jose Trinidad Romero, 32, was arrested Wednesday after his truck was stopped by police in Escondido. Investigators said they believe Romero knew the man found unresponsive in the fire, but are unsure of the exact relationship. On Oct. 4, firefighters and police responded to the fire in the 600 block of Waverly Place. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was found inside unresponsive. The manner and cause of his death are still under investigation.Investigators say evidence at the scene pointed to the fire being deliberately set.
