SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A California Assemblymember Thursday requested a state audit to review how that City and County of San Diego responded to a recent hepatitis A outbreak. In a letter to the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, Assemblymember Todd Gloria asks that the committee “determine whether both the County and City identified, contained, and treated the recent Hepatitis A virus (HAV) outbreak in accordance with statutory requirements and recommended procedures.”“We owe it to the 20 people who died and the more than 500 who contracted Hepatitis A to learn exactly what went wrong and what could have been done better,” said Assemblymember Todd Gloria. “It is my hope this audit will help us better understand how the City and County managed the Hepatitis A outbreak and ultimately make certain our region is sufficiently prepared to handle any future public health crisis that may arise.”According to the letter, the hepatitis A outbreak started in March of 2017. In September of 2017, county health officials declared a public health emergency. The county ended the public health emergency declaration in January of 2018.Assemblymember Gloria’s request for an audit will be heard by the committee on May 16.A spokesperson for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer responded with the following statement on the request for an audit: 1346

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Happy Father's Day! Many dads were happy to take their loved ones out for a hearty meal, now that COVID-19 restrictions have become a little looser. All around town, there were lines out the door for Father's Day brunch. This was a welcome sight for San Diego restaurant owners."We missed mother's day, and we missed spring break," Johnny Rivera, co-owner of Hash House A Go Go in Hillcrest said. "These are the acorns in our business that we like to gather. And now that it's Father's Day, we feel like kind of back to normal today."During last month's Mother's Day, restaurants were only allowed to offer curbside pick up and delivery due to County Health Department rules. But now that dining restrictions have eased up, the 'Papa Bears' were ready for their big outing."They seem like they're coming out of hibernation a little bit," Rivera laughed. Some were still a bit hesitant to dine out."We were a little skeptical about it, but we still enjoy going out here and there," father, Alan Valdez said. He and his family were dining at Breakfast Republic in Downtown San Diego.Others were publicly ready to celebrate fatherhood with their loved ones."We were all waiting by our cars," a diner at Hash House A Go Go said. "We got a phone call, and everybody kept their distance while we were waiting." Three generations of his family were dining out, after getting a last-minute table at the restaurant. Of course, menu items were all dad-sized and dad-approved."Pork ribs and eggs, chicken wings and eggs, fried chicken, waffle, all things dad needs," Rivera shared."You can take a shower in this bowl, man!" the diner at Hash House said. The best part of the day?"Just hang out, take a day off work," Valdez said."I got my family. That's all that matters!" 1785

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A suspect was arrested in a 1970s-era killing in California after investigators used the same advanced DNA testing that helped crack the Golden State Killer case, authorities said Thursday.John Arthur Getreu, 75, was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and strangling 21-year-old Janet Ann Taylor in March 1974, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office announced.Taylor was last seen alive attempting to hitchhike from Palo Alto to her home in nearby La Honda. Her body was found along a busy street.Getreu was already in custody in Santa Clara County after being charged last year with sexually assaulting and strangling Leslie Perlov, another 21-year-old woman, in 1973.Investigators previously believed the killings of Perlov and Taylor were connected. But their cases had gone unsolved until DNA testing evolved enough to deliver credible results from the degraded DNA collected at both killing scenes.Authorities in both counties submitted DNA samples to the same publicly available DNA database used to identify Joseph DeAngelo, who authorities believe is the Golden State Killer.Getreu was linked to both killings after the testing connected him to both crime scenes, investigators said.In the Golden State Killer case, investigators used DNA from the attacks to locate a relative of DeAngelo then turned to traditional techniques to find the suspect.Authorities have linked the Golden State Killer to 13 attacks of women throughout California between 1974 and 1986."Law enforcement is not giving up on victims," Assistant San Mateo County Sheriff Gregory Rothaus said at a news conference on Getreu in Redwood City. "We have new DNA technology that is a great tool for us."Santa Clara County court records show Getreau is represented by the county's public defender's office, which didn't return a call.Getreau has not yet been appointed a lawyer in San Mateo County. 1910

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV) -- With sudden layoffs and overcrowded grocery stores, the coronavirus is making it even more difficult for families to feed themselves. But many are stepping up to distribute food for free.Three hundred sixty-five cars lined up with their trunks popped wide open, ready for bags of free food to be plopped in. Following their new drive-up food bank protocols, volunteers at the Community Through Hope (CTH) warehouse in Chula Vista made no direct contact with the families in line. "We were able to provide so much nutrition in his very safe environment and get it out quickly," Rosey Vasquez, Executive Director of CTH, said. RELATED: South Park restaurant transforms into grocer amid coronavirus closuresSo quickly, they ran out of food in an hour and a half. It was the same story at the Brother Benno Foundation in Oceanside. Their Feeding San Diego distribution was supposed to last all day. But their warehouse cleared up after 150 cars rolled in, in just two hours. Meanwhile, in the Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego, the kitchen staff at Metl Bar and Restaurant are hard at work. They are not getting nearly as many orders with just take-home and deliveries. But the owners, Jenna and Randy Elskamp, did not want to lay off their staff. Their idea was to have them continue to make hot meals for newly unemployed restaurant workers. RELATED: Grocery stores with hours for seniors amid coronavirus pandemic"We know so many of our friends are not prepared for this, do not have financial means to take care of themselves, and they're all very stressed out," Jenna Elskamp said. "And so giving back to our industry was where we want to help."They have a couple of sponsors now. But the Elskamps have no idea if they could survive this in the long run. But as veterans in the restaurant industry, they said they know the hardships. That is why they set up a section of their website to offer free meals for anyone in the industry struggling to feed themselves."I feel like we are all on a sinking ship right now," Jenna said. "Instead of being the rats who are trying to climb up to the very top of the ship to save themselves, we want to be there at the bottom, trying to help everyone survive. Because we either make it out of this together or we don't. We're just trying to do our part."RELATED: Feeding San Diego adding more pickup locationsStaff at San Diego's many food distribution centers said there is a limited supply. So to have a better chance of getting the food bags, arrive at the warehouses early. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 64-year-old man is recovering after he was beaten in Kearny Mesa by a group of street racers so severely he had a brain bleed and fractured disk. "I felt my RV jostling around, like maybe they were standing on my bumper, so I got out and went around back to look and I look up and someone's standing on my RV," said the victim, who did not wish to be identified.Police said the beating happened on June 28 around 9:30 p.m. A group of street racers arrived in the area for an apparent “meet up” and gathered into a large group. Multiple vehicles arrived at the location and began doing “burn-outs” in the street. Some members of the group climbed on top of the victim’s RV. When the victim walked out of his vehicle to confront them, three of the men attacked him. Another man stole the man's phone from his pocket as he was lying on the ground unconscious. "The last thing I remember is one of his buddies jumping out and I don’t know what happened after that; I probably got hit from behind."The suspects fled the area in a grey, possibly 2003 Audi A4 sedan. The man was left lying in the street. Employees from a nearby business ran out to help him and called an ambulance. San Diego County Crime Stoppers along with investigators from the San Diego Police Department’s Eastern Division are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the attackers. Officers are investigating the attack as a felony battery and robbery case.Anyone with information on the identity or location of the suspects is asked to call SDPD’s Eastern Division at 858-495-7957 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 888-580-8477. Crime Stoppers is offering up to a ,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest in this case. 1775
