BERLIN, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China is gradually learning and absorbing ideas on human rights that can grow on its soil, and remains opposed to attempts by the West to impose its standards on China, says Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying.In a recent interview with the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Fu said it seems "controversial and illogical" that Western countries acknowledge China's economic success and contributions to efforts against the global financial crisis, while "definitely" turning a blind eye to China's political progress.It seems as if the West wants to say that China has achieved all these without the leadership of the government and the Communist Party, maybe in total anarchy, Fu said."I still remember when I was an interpreter in the 1980s, human rights was always on the menu in our dialogues and our European guests brought lists of names with them," she said."Thirty years later, China has moved on, and so much has changed. In 2004, protection of human rights was incorporated into China's constitution. Many relevant laws and rules have been amended accordingly," Fu said.However, European delegations still come to China with the same stance, accusing China in a commanding way, Fu said."I really don't hear much mentioning of China' s human rights progress," she said.Yet, those political extremists seem to be presenting the whole picture of China's human rights for European countries, she said.Fu believes that to know the real China, it's not enough to "single out things you are interested in, or only listen to people who talk your talk."The most important is to look at the benefits of the majority of the people, she said.

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- China provided 56,000 hectares of land for residential use in the first six months of 2010, up 135 percent over the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Land and Resources.A significant increase in the availability of land for housing was reported in areas like Guizhou Province, Beijing, Jiangxi Province, Heilongjiang Province and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, said a statement on the ministry's website.The land and resources management departments at various levels have been working hard to ensure land supplies, especially for indemnificatory housing, shantytown relocation housing, public rental housing and middle-sized and small apartments, the statement said.The departments will work hard to ensure land supplies for public residential purposes, it added.China implemented a series of measures to rein in soaring home prices and curb property market speculation in April. ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a massive rain-triggered mudslide in Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province has risen to 702, with 1,042 others still missing, local civil affairs authorities said Tuesday afternoon.Some 1,243 people have been rescued, Tian Baozhong, head of the provincial civil affairs department, told a news conference.Of them, 58 who were seriously injured had been hospitalized, Ma Chengyang, deputy director of the provincial publicity department, told another press briefing Tuesday night.Torrential rain on Saturday night prompted an avalanche of sludge and debris to crash down on the county seat of Zhouqu early Sunday morning, ripping many houses off their foundations and tearing multi-story apartment buildings in half.The mud-rock flow has leveled an area of about 5 km long, 300 meters wide and 5 meters deep in the county seat with more than 2 million cubic meters of mud and rocks, severely damaging power, telecommunication and water supply facilities.About 45,000 residents have been evacuated, as mudslides have destroyed more than 300 homes and damaged another 700. Moreover, 3,000 homes have been flooded.More than 4,400 tents have reached Zhouqu but most of them have not yet been set up due to a lack of open space, Tian said.About 16,000 more tents from the Ministry of Civil Affairs are still in Lanzhou, the provincial capital, Tian said.The mountainous terrain has hampered disaster relief operations. Rescuers could only set up 100 tents in two settlement centers on the playgrounds of two middle schools."We have adequate tents, but insufficient space to pitch them," said Zhang Hongdong, a worker with the county's Red Cross Society.Most people affected by the disaster sought shelter with their relatives and friends in nearby regions, Zhang added.

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's central government has urged more efforts to be made to ensure this year's grain output, a government statement said Wednesday.A string of policies have been rolled out to support autumn grain production, said the State Council, China's cabinet, in the statement released after an executive meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday.Autumn grain production is key for China to meet its annual output target as it accounts for 70 percent of the total production.The Ministry of Finance will allocate 1.1 billion yuan (162.4 million U.S. Dollars) to subsidize purchases of fertilizer and pest control, the statement said.Wen urged efforts to restore production in disaster-hit regions at the meeting, after large swathes of farmland have been affected by floods in recent months.Wen also stressed the application of technology and weather forecasting at the meeting.China's summer grain output declined 0.3 percent year on year to 123.1 million tonnes this year, the first fall in seven years, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China's largest gold producer said on Tuesday its operating profits rose by three fold to 1.55 billion yuan (228.09 million U.S. dollars) in the first six months this year.China National Gold Group Corp. said in a statement that its first-half revenue grew by 98 percent from a year earlier to 27.67 billion yuan and expected its full-year revenue to reach 50 billion yuan.At the end of June, the gold producer had 1,250 tonnes of gold reserves, eight million tonnes of copper reserves and 1.6 million tonnes of molybdenum, according to the statement.In the first half of 2010, the company added a total of 24.7 tonnes of gold, 683,000 tonnes of copper and 445,000 tonnes of molybdenum to its reserves, said the statement.The company had improved its development strategies through conducting merge and acquisitions, integrating regional resources and exploring overseas, said Sun Zhaoxue, general manager of the gold producer.
