A man allegedly cut through a fence to escape a coronavirus isolation facility Friday in New Zealand. Officials say the man, only described as being in his 50s, apparently went to a liquor store before returning on his own to the facility.The man is now in police custody and is expected to appear in court, according to a statement from New Zealand Air Commodore Darryn Webb, Head of Managed Isolation and Quarantine.He said investigators believe the man cut through fence ties to break out of the facility around 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, then returned about 30 minutes later. Authorities are checking CCTV footage to confirm the man’s movements during that time. It happened in the town of Hamilton, on the North Island of New Zealand.It appears the man visited a liquor store. Police have talked to the store, and no one entered it this morning until health officials confirmed it was safe to do so.“Managed isolation is a critical part in our defence against COVID-19, and it is up to each and every person entering this country to play their part and abide by the law,” Webb said.The man who escaped arrived from Sydney on July 1, and their first coronavirus test came back negative, according to Webb. However, he still must remain in isolation. Webb believes the health risk from this incident is very low.“We take any breach of the COVID-19 rules very seriously. Wilfully leaving our facilities will not be tolerated, and the appropriate action will be taken,” Webb said.This comes just two days after another man escaped from a separate isolation facility in Auckland. This man, age 32, has tested positive for coronavirus. He was reportedly outside smoking a cigarette when he left the facility and visited a supermarket before returning.After that incident, Webb said fencing at all isolation facilities will be replaced with 6-foot-high fences.Travelers are being asked to isolate for at least 14 days in New Zealand, some must go to isolation facilities. 1976

A cipher sent in 1969 by the Zodiac Killer has been solved.In an email to EW Scripps, the Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed that three "private citizens cracked the cipher.""On Dec. 5, the FBI received the solution to a cipher popularly known as Z340 from a cryptologic researcher and independently verified the decryption," the FBI said in a statement. "Cipher Z340 is one of four ciphers attributed to the Zodiac Killer. This cipher was first submitted to the FBI Laboratory on Nov. 13, 1969, but not successfully decrypted. Over the past 51 years, CRRU has reviewed numerous proposed solutions from the public--none of which had merit."According to the Associated Press, code experts from the United States, Australia, and Belgium solved it.The code was first sent to the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper in 1969 by the Zodiac Killer, who murdered five people between 1968 and 1969 in the Bay Area.According to The Chronicle, David Oranchak, one of the three to crack the cipher, has worked on Zodiac's codes since 2006.Oranchak told the newspaper that the cipher included sentences like "I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me" and that the killer wasn't "afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise all the sooner."Cameron Polan, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s San Francisco office, told E.W. A Florida sheriff's office says it was able to identify a murder victim 35 years after he went missing thanks to the victim's custom belt buckle.According to the Pensacola Journal News, officials with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office said they were successfully able to identify the body of William Ernest Thompson 37 years after he went missing.The WKMG-TV in Orlando reports that the body was found Jan. 23, 1985 about 10 miles northwest of downtown Pensacola. Officials suspected that the man had been dead for months, and possibly more than a year before it had been found.For more than three decades, the department could not find a lead in the case. The suspected murder victim was only identified as "John Doe."It wasn't until 2018, when a person searching for a missing relative, stumbled upon the case on the Escambia County Sheriff's Office (ECSO) website. Knowing their relative had last been seen in Escambia County, the person contacted the department.But authorities said they didn't truly have a lead in the case until the relative noticed the victim's belt buckle, which matched the initials of thier uncle, William Thompson."The thing that stuck out to the person the most was the victim's belt buckle with the hand-engraved initials' W.T." Chief Deputy Chip Simmons of the ECSO said in a Facebook post. "The person felt this could have been their missing uncle, whose last known location was in Escambia County near the same time John Doe's body was discovered."The relative said that while he had never been reported missing, no one in their family had spoken to their uncle, William Thompson, since 1983. Officials took a sample of the tipster's DNA, and compared with the DNA of the body. Test results confirmed the body was that of William Thompson.Thompson would have been 49 when his body was found in 1985."This is another example of the never-ending quest for justice,” ECSO Chief Deputy Chip Simmons said in a written statement. “While we haven’t yet solved the homicide, it is a step forward and can give the family some closure until the case is solved.”The case is still open and being investigated as a homicide. 2155
