BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Reasserting its determination to crush gang crimes, China's Ministry of Public Security released a list of 52 major cases of gang crimes across the country and said it would supervise the handling of these cases in a circular issued on Tuesday.The ministry would appoint officers to supervise and track the investigation of these cases, while at the same time providing expertise and technological support, the circular said.It specifically ordered police chiefs, in areas where the mob cases occurred, to personally lead the investigation and said they would be held accountable for the investigation.Police nationwide must strengthen cooperation with disciplined inspection and supervision departments to remove the mafia's "protective umbrellas" and root out its financial resources by confiscating all asserts related to gang crimes.This was the eighth such listing released by the ministry since a long-term national campaign to crackdown on gang crimes began in February 2006.Since then, the ministry has supervised the handling of 296 major cases of gang crimes. Among them, 270 have been prosecuted and courts have handed down sentences in 210 cases, according to the circular.It cited one severe case in which a 27-member mafia group was apprehended by police in central Hubei Province for murdering, organizing gambling, and monopolizing construction projects.The group leader, Jin Gangqiao, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhuanet) --Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co is expected to complete it takeover of Swedish luxury car brand Volvo from US automaker Ford Motor Co on Monday after getting government approval for the deal.Ministry of Commerce officials told China Daily on Thursday that the government cleared the Volvo deal on Monday 26, after the National Development and Reform Commission cleared the proposal last week.Geely has also got the necessary anti-trust approvals from the European Union and the US government for the deal.Li Shufu (center), chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Co, arrives for a news conference in Beijing earlier this year. However, unnamed sources from Geely told China Daily that the Zhejiang-based automaker will hold a formal function on Monday to complete the deal.Geely's shares surged nearly 11.32 percent and closed at HK.95 per share in Hong Kong on Thursday.Privately owned Geely paid .8 billion to acquire the Volvo car brand from Ford on March 28 this year. WUHAN/XI'AN, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in two Chinese provinces traversed by the Hanjiang River, the largest branch of the swollen Yangtze River, issued fresh flood warnings Friday.The Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in central Hubei Province said areas along the Hanjiang River will face severe floods.Pressure is building at the Danjiangkou reservoir, which is already dealing with the worst flooding of the year so far.The water level in the reservoir had risen to 150.74 meters by Friday, about 1.74 meters above the warning line, and is expected to rise to 152 meters before the end of the month.Engineers at the reservoir more than doubled the flow rate of water from 1,920 cubic-meters per second to 5,000 cubic-meters per second.Along the upper reaches of the Hanjiang River in Shaanxi Province, floods and landslides had left at least 73 people dead and 121 missing as of Friday noon, the provincial government said.About 213,000 residents from 24 counties and districts in the cities of Hanzhong, Ankang and Shangluo in southern Shaanxi have been evacuated. More than 60,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged.A new round of rainstorms began to pound the region Thursday. ZHENGZHOU, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Three city mayors were suspended from their positions Friday after three mine accidents killed 169 people in central China's Henan Province, said the provincial authorities Friday.Li Endong, mayor of Pingdingshan City, Li Junfeng, vice mayor of the city in charge of work safety, and Shen Qinghuai, vice mayor of Luoyang City in charge of work safety, were suspended Friday, pending investigations, said the provincial committee of the Communist Party of China in a statement.Pingdingshan has seen two deadly accidents since last year. At least 49 miners died after explosives detonated at Xingdong No. 2 Mine on June 21, 2010. Another deadly gas explosion killed 76 people in the Xinhua No.4 pit in Xinhua District on Sept. 8, 2009.Luoyang City was home to a gas blast that killed 44 people in a coal pit in Yichuan County on March 31, 2010.All three mines had been ordered to suspend production before the accidents but somehow operated secretly as a result of possible negligence by the safety watchdogs.
