SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scripps Research scientists have figured out how to reverse the desire to drink in alcohol-dependent rats. According to a news release, the researchers were able to use lasers to temporarily inactivate a specific circuit in the brain to reverse the behavior. “This discovery is exciting—it means we have another piece of the puzzle to explain the neural mechanism driving alcohol consumption,” says Olivier George PhD, an associate professor at Scripps Research and senior author of the new study.Though the discovery is exciting news for science, researchers say the treatment is far from ready for human use. George says he believes that the discovery will open the door to developing drug and gene therapies to treat alcohol addiction. “We need compounds that are specific to this neuronal circuitry,” George says. In the U.S., more than 15 million adults suffer from alcohol use disorder, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. 991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University canceled spring break 2021 on Tuesday night, citing concerns of rising COVID-19 cases. Instead of the traditional nine day break, students will get four "rest and recovery days" scattered throughout the semester. The days will create multiple long weekends for students and faculty. The decision was made during a University Senate meeting. The vote was 44 to 28. The school senate is made up of faculty, staff and student representatives. Within hours of the decision, an online petition gained thousands of signatures from students asking for the school to bring back spring break. In a lengthy email sent to the entire campus, school officials explained the decision was made in an attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19,citing health and safety as the schools top priority. Officials say the rest and recovery days are for no instruction, assignments, deadlines or exams. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police say the man found shot behind a Midway District strip mall was the victim of an armed robbery.Police received a call on Wednesday just after 6 p.m. over shots fired and a vehicle collision in the 3600 block of Midway Dr. Officers arrived to find a grey Acura had crashed into a retaining wall behind several businesses. Inside, the driver had been shot at least once.The man, identified as 18-year-old Eduardo Salguero of San Diego, was taken to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries.Investigators say they've learned that Salguero had arranged to purchase an item through Snapchat. When he arrived to meet the sellers, two Hispanic males entered his vehicle. During the meeting, one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and the transaction turned into an armed robbery.Multiple gunshots were fired inside the vehicle, police said. The two suspects then fled on foot. Police only described the suspects as Hispanic males, between 20-30 years old, who were wearing dark clothing at the time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Shoppers in Del Mar Heights are checking their receipts after learning through a social media app that some merchants are charging more sales tax than they should. Last year the City of Del Mar raised its sales tax to 8.75 percent, but the tax rate only applies to businesses within the city.  The problem arose when some businesses that share Del Mar's zip code, but get San Diego services, mistakenly charged the higher Del Mar rate. San Diego's sales tax is 7.75 percent. David did not want to give his last name, but he checked his receipt for the Jack in the Box restaurant in the beachside shopping center and discovered he'd been charged the higher tax rate, an extra 8-cents. David didn't complain to management and told us 8-cents wasn't a big set-back but did say he believed the problem should be corrected.  Several of his neighbors posted comments on the Nextdoor social media site about other establishments doing the same thing. 10News made purchases at three stores and found they charged the correct sales tax, but when we bought a salad and iced tea from Jack in the Box, we were charged at the Del Mar rate of 8.75 percent, just like David.  Another customer who did not want his name used also shared a receipt showing he paid at the higher rate. He also had a receipt dated April 24 of this year, showing he overpaid sales tax to the Del Mar Wine Company in the same shopping center. A spokesman for Jack in the Box told 10News the franchise made an honest mistake and re-set its cash registers to reflect the correct sales tax. A clerk at the wine store told 10News to email the manager.  As of this posting, he had not responded. 10News Contacted the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration.  Spokesman Paul Cambra explained that Del Mar was one of the few pockets of California that have a "zip code split".  Cambra called it a common problem when zip code boundaries don't match city boundaries. In an email to 10News Cambra wrote:"If a taxpayer overcharges, we will tell them to either return it to the customer or remit it to the CDTFA. If they have undercharged, they will still owe the tax, and depending on when they remit it, they may also be charged interest and penalties." Cambra noted that no consumer complaints about being overcharged had come from the 92014 zip code. Consumers are encouraged to know the sales tax in the communities where they shop. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting this month, the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park will begin requiring ticket reservations for all guests.The two parks have avoided requiring ticket reservations since reopening as an outdoor attraction last June. SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND California have reopened in more limited capacities and have required reserved tickets for guests.Starting Dec. 5, the two zoos will begin to require a reservation for guests. San Diego Zoo Global says the change will be in addition to health screenings and safety measures already implemented throughout the park."Due to COVID-19, in order to keep our community safe during this time and in anticipation of high demand, the San Diego Zoo will implement a reservation system required for entry," the zoo's website reads.Ticket reservations will be required for all visitors ages 3 and older. San Diego Zoo members will need to make a reservation to visit ahead of time as well.
