SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One San Diego woman is changing the world, one butterfly at a time. Jan Landau’s family knows the horrors of the Holocaust. She made a promise to them, never to forget. She co-founded the Butterfly Project. It brings the history of the Holocaust to the classroom and introduces an art project, painting ceramic butterflies. Each beautifully painted butterfly represents the life of a child killed in the Holocaust. The Butterfly Project is being taught in schools throughout San Diego County. Volunteers have also brought the lesson to schools around the world. Now ceramic butterflies are displayed on walls on every continent of the world. "We have hope that even in difficult times….things will get better," Landau said.This lesson is told, not by teachers but the children of Holocaust survivors, bringing the past to life in a way that helps students make the world a better place. It starts with understanding history. Landau brings the Jewish star to show students. The star was required to be worn on the outside of clothing. “To identify them as Jews and be treated poorly," Landau said.Jews were stripped of their names and given only a number and a uniform. The living were forced to take pieces of clothing from those who passed. If they were fortunate to find a way to sew pieces on their uniform, it would keep them warmer in the winters of Poland. A volunteer speaker tells how her father used a pocket. “My dad took this pocket in hopes he’d find food to put inside this pocket." Another volunteer speaker show slides of Jewish prisoners sleeping, one on top of each other, on wooden planks, so tightly they couldn’t turn over. They had to rest their heads on their metal food bowl. “There was no mattress, no blanket, no pillow." The mission of the Butterfly Project is to honor and remember the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust by creating a butterfly for each life lost. “It represents their voice. They have a voice…we remember these children that were killed," said Landau.Landau and her team share the trait that gave their families a happy life: gratitude. “The most important lesson of the Holocaust is to have perseverance; we all go through stuff, but we have to persevere.” They teach the dangers of hate and bigotry and the importance of being what they call an ‘upstander.’ “To stand up for not only our rights but the rights of others," Landau said.For her mission to spread love and remembrance around the world, we rewarded Jan Landau with the 10News Leadership Award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Officials with the the Department of Homeland Security announced Friday plans to screen people returning from restricted countries.American citizens, legal permanent residents, and their immediate families returning to the United States will be required to arrive at one of 13 airports for enhanced screening for coronavirus.“While the overall risk of serious infection from the coronavirus to the general public remains low at this time, the Trump administration is taking these aggressive measures to keep the risk low, requiring all Americans returning from affected areas in Europe to be funneled through 13 airports for screening upon their return to the U.S.,” said Acting Secretary Wolf. “To minimize disruptions to travelers, TSA, CBP, and air carriers are working to identify qualifying passengers before their scheduled flights. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than 24,000 people were left without power due to an unplanned outage in San Diego Tuesday afternoon. The power outage was reported around noon and affected 24,067 people throughout San Diego. As of 7 p.m., the San Diego Gas and Electric outage map showed 3,352 customers without power. Neighborhoods affected include: City Heights, Chollas Creek, Oak Park, Kensington, Talmadge, W State College, Rolando, E State College and La Mesa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One of the first questions San Diegans had after a 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit Southern California: Where was the alert?Exactly one week ago, San Diego phones buzzed in unison for a test of California’s Earthquake Early Warning System, ShakeAlert. The system aims to help alert locals seconds before an earthquake hits to find shelter.Thursday, no alert went out when San Diego felt shaking.RELATED: 6.4-magnitude earthquake rattles July 4th for Southern CaliforniaThe San Diego County Office of Emergency Services says the alert system is still in the testing phase. Currently, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services is evaluating the data collected from the June 27 test.The state hopes to set up the system in the future in the same way Amber Alerts are sent out regionally. Before that can happen, the county says they need to make sure the system works fast enough to alert residents, the county says.Many San Diegans, however, say they didn't even receive the test message last week. For them, the county asks for feedback to work out the bugs in the system. Those individuals can fill out an online survey here .Los Angeles County residents already receive a similar alert, but many complained they weren't alerted Thursday either. Los Angeles city officials say their alert didn't go off because the earthquake wasn't recorded above a 5.0-magnitude shake within Los Angeles County. Officials said they now plan to lower that threshold.USGS seismologist Robert Graves told the Associated Press that the state's new system detected Thursday's earthquake, providing 48 seconds of warning to Caltech's seismology lab in Pasadena, and adding "there were no glitches" in the system. 1717
