A group of California lawmakers is raising new questions about what the state is getting in return for the billions of dollars it has spent combating its homeless crisis.The seven lawmakers, all Republicans, are calling for an audit that will need bipartisan support to get going. In the last two years, California has invested .7 billion on homelessness, and Gov. Gavin Newsom is budgeting an additional .4 billion in next year's budget. Meanwhile, the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development says California's homeless population increased by 16 percent last year, or 21,306 people. "I don't know where that money is going, and it's being approved by the legislature," said State Sen. Brian Jones, Republican of San Diego County's 38th district, who is calling for the audit. "So if I don't know where it's going, how can the taxpayers know where it's going?"Newsom's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Last week, Newsom unveiled a proposal for .4 billion to overhaul medi-cal and create a new fund that would serve in part to help people on the brink of homelessness make rent. San Diego homeless advocate Michael McConnell, who is not a member of a political party, said he has been asking many of the questions those seeking the audit are raising. "We know the big buckets that the money just kind of disappears into, but what we don't do is we don't follow it all the way through to see how many folks were actually getting out of homelessness," he said. The state's Joint Legislative Audit Committee, comprised mostly of Democrats, will consider the audit request at its Feb. 19 meeting. A man has been arrested after allegedly attacking a woman with a biscuit in Nashville. An affidavit from Metro Nashville Police said officers were called to 2301 Murfreesboro Pike on Aug. 19 in response to a domestic disturbance. A Google Maps search shows a BP gas station at that address.A woman told police that she was in the backseat of her boyfriend’s car when the suspect threw a biscuit that hit her in the face. The victim reported being in pain after the incident.When they left the area, the suspect allegedly charged after her and punched the hood of the car, leaving a large dent. He then yelled, “I’ll kill you mother f***er,” the police report said. The victim said she was “very much in fear” and believed she would have been hurt had her boyfriend and another person not intervened. Police later arrested Jeffrey L. Tomerlin on a charge of public intoxication. Officers said he smelled of alcohol and his level of intoxication was so high that he may have been a danger to himself. The affidavit also said he was an “unreasonable annoyance” to people in the area. He was eventually taken to an area hospital because police said he kept banging his head on the patrol car windows.  1245

A bronze statue of the late United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be unveiled in Brooklyn next year.According to a press release, the statue will permanently reside at the City Point development in downtown Brooklyn and unveiled on March 15, which would have been the late justice's 88th birthday."In her lifetime, Justice Ginsburg championed countless crucial causes. This statue is just a small reminder that we all need to set the highest possible standards for ourselves and society," Chris Conlon, EVP and Chief Operating Officer of Acadia Realty, said in the release. "From the people who work here, to the diverse shoppers and shopping at City Point, everyone feels welcome, equal, and respected. We are honored to have this great statue grace our property, and to bring Justice Ginsburg's 'path marking' spirit back to Brooklyn to inspire us for generations."Artist duo Gillie and Marc design the statue as part of their "Statues for Equality" series, which have already installed 10 sculptures of women around New York City. Ginsburg's figure is the eleventh in their series."We had the honor and privilege to create Justice Ginsburg's likeness in everlasting bronze as a part of Statues for Equality," the artist duo said. "The final statue, which she endorsed, reflects her wish to be depicted in a dignified manner." A Detroit man says a manager at a nearby McDonald's tried to attack him and grab his phone after he asked the restaurant to fix his order.After a long day at work on Sunday, Tyler Lamb says he stopped at a Dearborn, Michigan McDonald's to grab some food.Lamb said his order was all wrong. According to him, the food was cold and items were missing, so he drove back through the drive thru to get his order fixed — while recording the incident on his phone.The employee working the drive-thru handled Lamb's complaint and told him to call the restaurant the next morning in order to remedy the situation.But things quickly got heated out of nowhere. The manager reached out of the drive-thru window and tried to grab Lamb's phone when she noticed he was recording.Lamb says he doesn't understand what made the manager so angry and feels he’s the one who should be upset, saying it would be nice to get an apology and his order fixed.McDonald’s has released the following statement in response to the incident: 1056
