DENVER — A Denver dad who witnessed a serious crash involving a pedestrian on Leetsdale Drive Thursday night says he wants to know why two paramedics, in a South Adams County - Northglenn ambulance, ignored his requests to help a young boy injured in that crash."I was heading to Cherry Creek reservoir with my dog," said the witness, who asked to remain anonymous. "The two little boys, one must not have been much over the age of 8, made their way across Leetsdale, several yards west of the Quebec intersection."He said the boys were crossing from north to south and had made it to the island in the middle of the street, and then began walking in front of cars that were stopped at the light.They were almost on the other side, when an eastbound car began approaching in the right turn lane. The boys darted in front of the car. The younger one took the brunt of the impact."He flew 20 yards and lost both of his shoes," the witness said. "I couldn't believe it."The witness added that what happened next was even more unbelievable.He spotted an ambulance waiting at the stoplight around the corner."By the Grace of God, there was a paramedic sitting...in traffic," he told Denver7. The witness said he approached the ambulance and knocked on the window."I told them, 'he's on the road, you've got to go help him,'" he said.But there was no response."I remember thinking they weren't understanding me. There's no reaction. I said, 'you have to go help him,'" he said.The witness, who has a 1-year old son, said he was talking to his wife on the phone and she told him to record the ambulance, so he did.He shared cell phone video of the ambulance, which was in the far-right southbound lane inching its way up to the intersection.After a brief toot of the siren, the ambulance entered the intersection and proceeded southbound without stopping, while the injured boy lay in the street a few yards away."It's sad," the witness said. "It's something that shouldn't happen in the United States."He said he wants to see some accountability.Ambulance Service ReactionKMGH reached out to South Adams County Paramedics-Northglenn Ambulance, a nonprofit service based in Northglenn.Initially, a director said she'd look into the claims, and then called back and said it was under investigation, so she couldn't comment.She cautioned that there "are two sides to every story."When asked about the nonprofit's protocol when paramedics are made aware of an accident outside their normal "coverage" area, the director said she couldn't answer that question while the incident is under investigation.KMGH checked with other paramedic services in metro Denver.A couple of them said they have no formal policy, but would stop and render aid, until local authorities arrived.One spokeswoman said without being there, it's hard to know whether there was a patient in the back of that ambulance, or whether it was on its way to pick one up."If there was a patient inside, the paramedics may not have been able to divert attention from the patient in the ambulance," she said.Serious ConditionDenver Police are still investigating the accident which happened around 6 p.m.They say the young victim remains in serious condition, but is stable. 3330

(KGTV) – The Bing Crosby Season at the Del Mar Racetrack kicks off Saturday with new rules to keep everyone involved healthy and safe.Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Media Director Mac McBride told ABC 10News, "We normally have one large jockey's room. What we've done now is made three jockey’s rooms to thin out the ranks so they're not sitting on top of each other like they do normally.”Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this racing season will be noticeably different than years past. This season, jockeys will also wear masks on and off the horses, test daily for the coronavirus, and if anyone receives a positive result, they'll be required to quarantine for at least 10 days."When we put that into place in the summer after our first hiccup, it worked out well. We had no further incidents with our riders,” McBride said.McBride added that even though the club took a big hit with empty stands this summer, folks were still tuning in and bets were still flying high."We thought we might do well, but we had no idea how we were going do that well, and we did. DENVER, Colo. — The mission of the nonprofit GrowHaus is to create community-driven food systems by serving as a hub for food production, distribution and education.Karla Olivas is a promotora, which is a community health worker that is active within Latinx populations across the U.S.“We educate persons about healthy food and about making medicine out of plants or herbs,” Olivas said.During the pandemic, GrowHaus has been delivering boxes of food to families in need.“Flour, sugar, chips or popcorn, beans, tortillas, the vegetables we get from our donations and sometimes it’s milk, eggs,” Olivas said.According to Feeding America – a nationwide network of food banks that provides emergency food assistance to millions of people every year – the pandemic has worsened the problem of food insecurity.“Food insecurity means you’re facing hunger," said Feeding America's Zuani Villarreal. "It means you may not know how to provide food for your family.”Villarreal says four in ten people are turning to food banks who never had to before.“The USDA said that there’s 35 million people that were food insecure before the pandemic," Villarreal said. "Using our Map the Meal Gap study, and evaluating annualized poverty rates and unemployment rates, we are projecting that this year because of the pandemic we will see 50 million people in the U.S. that are facing hunger.”Many of those are people in Latinx populations. A report from Feeding America explains Latino individuals are almost twice as likely to live in food insecure households compared to non-Hispanic white individuals. Villarreal says that will likely get even worse after all the job loss this year.“We know that at the peak, the Latinos unemployment rate was higher than any other demographic group, the service industry and the travel and hospitality industry. They’re disproportionally employed by people of color, and so those are the jobs that have been going away or have been reduced because of the pandemic,” Villarreal said.Olivas adds a lot of them are immigrants who likely don’t have unemployment or insurance benefits.“When they cut the hours or they stop businesses and they cannot work, they cannot get enough money to put food on the table,” Olivas said.To combat the systemic problem, Olivas says they are trying to empower Latinx populations to rely on each other for services to keep money in the community, whether it’s sewing a dress or making food to sell to a neighbor.“We are going to keep working with the community remotely," Olivas said. "We have been planning our classes online to keep teaching people how to grow their own vegetables.”Villarreal says Feeding America is also doing what it can to help people of color.“For us as a network, what we are doing is we are looking at those community that are more severely impacted, and looking to funnel resources to those food banks and those communities to provide additional support,” Villarreal said.Anybody else who would like to extend a helping hand is encouraged to donate food, funds, or time as a volunteer, whether it be for GrowHaus, Feeding America, or another local food bank in your area. Olivas says offering a necessity like food, helps families build a better life for their children.“It is something like, we’re taking one thing from their back to worry about – now OK we have food this week, so we can focus on other things," Olivas said.
