From schools to the economy, and now our democracy, the coronavirus is uprooting nearly all aspects of American’s lives. Several states have postponed elections as a health precaution, and voting advocates are calling on government leaders to prepare for voting system adjustments in case the COVID-19 crisis continues into the November general election. “For a lot of our registrars and election officials, they have been through some processes where they’re planning for emergencies. COVID-19 is adding a whole new layer,” said Kathay Feng. Feng is the executive director of California Common Cause, a non-partisan organization dedicated to making voting more accessible. With 30 states in the network, their election protection hotline is being flooded with calls. “State by state, one of the biggest questions is going to be, what are my alternatives? If I can’t get to my polling place, how can I get my ballot in?” said Feng. The organization is calling on Los Angeles County to send all registered voters a Vote-By-Mail ballot in the November General Election. And a newly proposed bill by Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden (D) would give all Americans the right to vote by mail if 25 percent of states declared an emergency related to the coronavirus. If passed, the measure would provide 0 million to fund the vote-by-mail efforts. However, making that change quickly won’t be easy. “You’ve got to print all the ballots, assemble them, make sure the right ballots are going to right people, and mail millions of ballots to people in Los Angeles alone,” said Feng. Carl Luna, a political science professor at San Diego Mesa College, says it’s an issue Congress must address. “Congress should probably have a national response to provide a big pot of money to every state, to be able to adjust their voting systems to deal with the pandemic, the way we’re doing it for economics and other issues,” said Luna. And for the change to be successful, Luna says states would have to do an aggressive campaign to ensure everyone not only gets a ballot but is reminded to send it back in. “Elections have to happen. Congress could postpone the November election, but by January 20, the president, under the Constitution, isout of office, and you need to have a replacement in place,” said Luna. He says if the November general election is postponed, it would be the first time in American history. “If we can do it during the Civil War, we can do it now, we just need the resolve and funding to do it,” said Luna. New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have added three new states to the tri-state travel advisory as more areas across the nation see an uptick in coronavirus cases.The advisory requires travelers from certain states hit hard by COVID-19 to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in the tri-state area.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo first announced Tuesday that Delaware, Kansas and Oklahoma will now join the growing list. Soon after, New Jersey and Connecticut added the states to their lists.States under the travel advisory must have an infection rate above 10 cases per 100,000 people, or if 10% of the total population tests positive. One woman in Palm Beach County, Florida who was granted anonymity for this story says it started with a simple walk to the mailbox.The woman first learned she was the victim of identity theft last Fall, and she claims scammers also tried stealing her mail last month.I She says she received a notification that she had signed up for Informed Delivery in her mailbox, even though she had never signed up for the service. Later, she received a Jet Blue credit card in the mail, for which she had also not signed up. She said she also received an alert from Bank of America about a second credit card that she had no knowledge of."Then, at that point, I said, 'OK, there’s something going on here,'" she said.USPS released this statement: In a very few cases, an individual’s identity has already been compromised by a criminal who then has used it to set up an Informed Delivery Account. "Then they are aware of when that credit card may be coming to your mailbox," the woman said.Luckily, she was able to intercept the credit card before the scammers did. Reporters referred the woman to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, which is now investigating.The woman is now taking extra precautions, actively monitoring all her accounts, and she installed a new mailbox with a lock inside."You helped to put me in touch with somebody who I felt really cared about what’s going on, because this is a serious matter. 7.5/10Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes a dramatic tonal shift from its super-serious 2019 predecessor, making it one of the goofier entries in the annualized franchise. While Modern Warfare was committed to realism, especially in its campaign, this new game is soaked in conspiracy theories, explosions, and cheesy 80’s haircuts. Despite this sharp pivot, Cold War quickly finds its footing by committing to its wacky tendencies, and out-there plot twists. It never quite reaches the heights of the previous game, but it’s far from a misfire.If this game’s campaign was turned into a feature film, it would be a contender for the most dad-friendly action flick of the year. All the ingredients are there, a Robert Redford look-alike, rock n’ roll music, Russian spies, and a villain posing a global threat that only a special team can prevent from happening. Maybe it was the testosterone radiating from my screen, or maybe it was too much coffee, but I was on-board with the ridiculousness from the get-go, even if it’s a tad too much off the rails at times. Screenshot from Activision From a length and difficulty perspective, Cold War follows the same pattern of being short and sweet as previous games, but it’s in the difficulty that I found a new appreciation for this series. While I’m no stranger to lowering things down to easy mode, in Cold War I played the campaign on the highest difficulty and found it to be surprisingly balanced and fair. Firefights are just the right amount of tense, without making the player feel like they need to duck after every shot, but if you make the wrong move, a game over is still inevitable. Thanks to the games friendly checkpoint system, a restart is never the end-of-the-world,but just a small delay in progression. Giving this mode a try is bound to help you when you take your skills online. Each year, when I dabble in Call of Duty multiplayer, I expect quick, snappy action and maps that are memorable. Cold War checks both those boxes. All the classic modes are here, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Search and Destroy. If you’re looking for larger-scale battles, the battle royale like Warzone is included in the package, and for the horde mode enthusiasts, Zombies is back too. Best of all, crossplay is back as a feature, bringing gamers that much closer to the end of the console wars. After more than a decade of these games, seeing experience points increase, guns unlock, and stats pop-up on-screen still elicits a rush of excitement like few shooters can create, which explains why the series continues to be on-top each year. Maybe it’s riding the coattails of last year’s formula, but I would have liked to see more zany qualities instilled in the multiplayer mode to match the campaign’s tone. Including just the slightest bit of 80’s themes would have been enough to separate itself from Modern Warfare. Just give me an eye-rolling one liner, maybe a Rambo-like headband, anything at all! Instead, it just feels like the same game with new maps, making for the same old Call of Duty atmosphere. I was never confused about what a perk does, button layout, or rules of a game mode. The series perfected multiplayer long ago, it’s time to take more risks.Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is another successful entry in the franchise. A man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing three people after they invited him over for Thanksgiving at their Avondale, Arizona, home. Court records show 33-year-old Brandon Robinson met two of the victims days before at a bar. Robinson had explained to them that he didn’t have family in town or a place to go for Thanksgiving, so they invited him to their home. According to one of the victims, after about 15 minutes at the home, Robinson began to act erratic and grabbed a knife approximately eight inches in length. Robinson then allegedly stabbed all three of the victims with the knife. One of the victims, a male, was stabbed approximately seven times and was hospitalized in critical condition. One female victim was stabbed approximately five times and had to have surgery for injuries. A second female victim had one stab wound but did not need to be hospitalized.Robinson reportedly left the scene before police arrived, but was located nearby with a large cut on his hand.No motive for the attack has been given.Robinson has been arrested and faces three charges of aggravated assault. 1116
