SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A fast-moving fire broke out in the mountains near Santa Barbara late Monday afternoon. According to KEYT, the blaze, named the Cave Fire, sparked around 4:15 p.m. along Highway 154 and East Camino Cielo. By 5 p.m., the fire had burned 15 acres. That number quickly grew to 2,500 acres by 7:54 p.m., The Tribune reports. (CNS) - Kobe Bryant's widow, Vanessa, responded Thursday to a lawsuit filed against her by her mother demanding financial support and claiming the late Laker legend had vowed to take care of her financially for life.In a statement posted online, Vanessa Bryant accused her mother -- Sofia Urbieta Laine -- accused her mother of trying to "extort a financial windfall from our family." Bryant said she and her husband long supported her, allowing her to live in their properties free of charge."She was a grandmother who was supported by me and her son-in-law at my request," Bryant said. "She now wants to back charge me per hour for supposedly working 12 hours a day for 18 years for watching her grandchildren. In reality, she only occasionally babysat my older girls when they were toddlers."Bryant said she has tried to make peace with her mother to no avail."Earlier this year, I was looking for a new home for her and, a week later, she went on television and gave an interview disparaging our family and making false accusations while living rent-free in a gated apartment complex in Newport Coast," she said. "Even after that betrayal, I was willing to provide my mother with monthly support for the rest of her life and that wasn't good enough. She, instead, contacted me through intermediaries -- contrary to what she claims, my phone number hasn't changed -- and demanded million, a house and a Mercedes SUV."Bryant said she refused, causing her mother to make "false and absurd claims" while demanding "more money than my husband and I ever spent to provide for her while he was alive.""She has no regard for how this is affecting my children and me," Bryant said. SELMA, Ala. (AP) — Bruce Carver Boynton, a civil rights pioneer who inspired the “Freedom Rides," has died at the age of 83.Former Alabama state Sen. Hank Sanders confirmed Boynton's passing Tuesday.Boynton was arrested 60 years ago for entering the white part of a racially segregated bus station in Virginia.That action began a chain reaction of events that ultimately helped to bring about the abolition of Jim Crow laws in the South.Boynton contested his conviction, and his appeal resulted in a Supreme Court decision that prohibited bus station segregation and helped inspire the landmark “Freedom Rides” of 1961. 627

SAN YSIDRO (KGTV)-- Activists for deported veterans are concerned as US Customs and Border Patrol agents call artists, asking them to paint over their work.On the Mexico side of Friendship Park, inside Friendship Circle, an upside-down American flag with white crosses for stars, stands as a reminder, bringing awareness to deported veterans and the difficulty they face."It's like an SOS in the military if you're being overrun by the enemy, and part of that was you know, we need help," Advocate Hector Barajas said."I think veterans should do their time, or should receive some kind of treatment instead of getting deported, you know if you get in trouble," he said. Barajas said the veterans who were deported were convicted of a crime and not citizens of the U.S. Back in the days of the Vietnam War, Barajas said the U.S. took anyone who was willing to fight.In Tijuana, Barajas not only co-founded the mural in 2013, he's helped 375 deported veterans in Mexico, from 40 different countries. His shelter and resource center, Deported Veterans Support House, provides food, clothing and shelter, as they transition to life in Mexico.Barajas?was a deported veteran himself, and seeing that flag gave him hope.On the other side of the flag are names of deported veterans, some have "RIP" painted next to their names.Instead of stars, the flag has white crosses. "The crosses of people who made the sacrifice for others to seek the American dream but we've also had others who have died on this side of the border," Barajas said.That part of the mural is what US Customs and Border Patrol is focusing on, according to Barajas, "they asked me if I could paint it to paint away the stars so it didn't look like an American flag."US Customs and Border Patrol released this statement:Barajas told the agent he doesn't maintain the mural and washed his hands of the issue. Though he was upset that so much attention has been pointed at this particular mural, "it should be free speech I should you know be able to do anything with that flag," he said.The federal government owns the border wall, as well as the immediate area in front of the wall. 2202
