K9 Griffen died Saturday after suffering from an unspecified medical condition.“It is with heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss that the Chula Vista Police Department says goodbye to Chula Vista Police Dog, K-9 Griffen,” the department said Monday.Griffen died surrounded by his handler, his handler’s family and other members of the K9 program.Griffen was a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois who worked to protect his handler, searched for suspects and made frequent appearances at community events. 590

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista parents who once felt hopeless now feel empowered to care for their children with behavioral challenges. Through the Parent Intervention Program (PIP), parents learn new strategies while their children develop their social-emotional skills and new ways of expressing themselves. PIP is offered free to Chula Vista families through the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD)."We want to do what we can for our families and children when it comes to the whole child, not only cognitively but socially and emotionally," said Rita Palet, the Director of Early Childhood Education Programs for CVESD.Palet says this is now a priority for the district, which is why they're offering the PIP program to families for free."Behaviors take a while to develop, so they do take a while to diminish," said Palet.Through the program, parents meet others dealing with similar struggles. "When you come here it makes you feel safe, I feel safe coming here, even when we had a rough morning getting here, they're so welcoming," said Mina Fagen, who brings her son to the program.Fagen says her son started acting out after changes happened in the family; his sister went to kindergarten and they also had a new baby in the family."I felt overwhelmed, and still at times feel overwhelmed, but this program gives me a safe place to go to," said Fagen.Parents ultimately give back to the program by volunteering their time later as a "payback parent." This means staff members have completed the program with their own child and can support others going through the program. CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Two San Diegans entered holy matrimony with a splash Friday, saying "I do" atop a water slide at Aquatica water park— or perhaps, "I dooooooooo."Hugh Rothman and Ilene Engel met in September 2016 on an online dating website. On a cruise in the Bahamas three months later, the couple realized they were meant for each other while standing on top of the ship's water slide.Bringing their love full circle, Rothman and Engel felt it only appropriate to tie the knot with a splash at Aquatica San Diego on the park's opening day of the season.With Rothman's daughter, Erica, officiating and Engel's son, Marc, taking video, the two exchanged vows from six stories up on the park's "Tassie's Twister" water slide. Their love made official, the two hopped into a raft and took the plunge into marital bliss to the bottom of the slide where they sealed their marriage with a kiss.Congratulations you two! 977

(KGTV) -Students and parents in the South Bay are demanding the Sweetwater Union High School District bring back their buses.In a cost-cutting move, the district announced last May that it would eliminate dozens of bus routes throughout the district. Four of the district's high schools were impacted. Eastlake and Olympian High Schools each lost four routes, Otay Ranch lost one, but San Ysidro High School took the biggest hit; with twenty out of twenty-two routes cut.Olga Espinoza attended Monday night's school board. She said her son has to walk more than three miles each way to get to school. She said it's simply not safe."Since we are on the border, I feel like he could get kidnapped. It's a really dark road, there's no benches, no water, there's coyotes out there, tarantulas, bugs, it's not a nice road for children to be walking, " Espinoza said. A couple dozen parents and students marched into the meeting holding cardboard school buses. They chanted, "Cut from the top, not our buses!" Many of them were with The San Ysidro Students United and Madres Unidas. A district spokesman said school leaders are trying to address their concerns. "We are not in terms of putting back any routes because the policy does stand in terms of our 3 and a half mile polic, but we are looking at potentially adding a couple of routes that will support some of the routes that currently exist, part of the issue is drivers, we don't have the drivers," said Communications Director Manny Rubio. Rubio estimated roughly seven-hundred students use buses, and that included kids who live right down the street from their school. He also said enrollment and attendance are up this year at San Ysidro High School. Parents paid 0 for a bus pass, but Rubio said the cost to the district was closer to ,000 a student."We're one of the few districts who still offers home to school transportation, even San Ysidro Elementary, which is right down the street, does not offer home to school transportation," said Rubio.Routes for special education students are not impacted.The district also said it would not have made the cuts without the completion of Old Otay Mesa Road which was finished in May. 2223
