INDIANAPOLIS ¡ª "I didn't know what to think. I was still in shock like how did the fire even happen?"Rachel McRee was in the restroom when she heard a loud explosion come from the kitchen where her boyfriend, Raveen Sugantheraj, had been cooking. "We didn't even realize that he had been burned," McRee said. The kitchen was on fire. So our first priority was putting that out."Once the couple finally put the fire out near the stove top, they realized that Sugantheraj had been severely burned. "It's his arms, his face, his neck, his hands, his ear," McRee said. "I feel terrible for him and the pain that he's in. I just feel horrible, you know, he's in so much pain," she said. "I've watched him get his bandage changed. He's got raw skin. It's like ten to 15 percent of his body that's just burnt off."Sugantheraj was in the hospital undergoing surgery on Friday."They're having to do skin grafts, severe ones. One is going to be pigskin, one's going to be his own skin," Sugantheraj's girlfriend said. She is not sure of his recovery time. The cause of the fire? A can of Pam cooking spray kept too close to open flames. "He's a full-time med student. He's educated. He's very smart... He had no idea - I had no idea," McRee said. "We know to keep cooking oil away, especially not on the stove top, but we had placed it far enough to where we thought it was OK."The medical director in Eskenazi's emergency department, Dr. Tyler Stepsis, said aerosol bottles like Pam make oils even more flammable. She said that this is a common occurrence. "You not only have the thing your aerosolizing but you also have the propellant. And the propellant a lot of times is what can catch fire," Dr. Stepsis said. As a warning: "When you set it down, don't put it by your stove, put it very far away because I don't want this to happen to anybody else," McRee said. Doctors say, bottom line, know what you're cooking with and keep it a safe distance from flames. RTV6 reached out to the company that makes Pam, and they told the newsroom:"Like other aerosols, PAM Cooking Sprays are flammable, and its contents are under pressure. For the past six months, electricity estimator Trevor Tate has been re-learning how to use his hand.¡°I use my hand ten hours a day all day, every day at work,¡± Tate said. ¡°I type ¡­ take notes, crunch numbers.¡± That's because while lighting fireworks on New Year's Eve, Tate did something he now calls stupid."I caved to peer pressure and decided that I would hold the launch tube and fire a firework from my hand out of the launch tube and up into the air, and it would be a joyous event,¡± he said. ¡°Well, the joyous event turned into one of the worst nights of my entire life."Instead of launching up into the air, the explosive fired downward, and through his right hand.¡°I remember my hand coming all the way back like this and me telling myself, ¡®wow that didn't feel right, felt like a lot of pressure.¡¯ I felt pain in my elbow and that was it, nowhere else,¡± Tate said. ¡°And then I looked down at the back of my hand and the whole back of my hand in this area was white ¡ª just like bright white. And I¡¯m like, ¡®something has happened.¡¯ ¡±He soon realized his hand was barely still attached. Doctors at two different hospitals that night told him he may lose his hand. But he was soon put in touch with Dr. Benson Pulikkottil at Denver's Swedish Medical Center.¡°It was a pretty shocking injury,¡± Pulikkottil said.Shocking, but something he believed he could fix. He attached Tate's hand to the tissue on his chest so blood could flow from his chest into his hand. A piece of skin from his chest now covers the underside of his hand.The doctor's advice this holiday?¡°Avoid alcohol during this time,¡± said Pulikkottil, the medical director of Burn & Reconstructive Centers of Colorado at Swedish Medical Center. ¡°Don't cloud your judgment. These injuries, when they happen in a millisecond, you've now changed your life forever.¡±"The way I feel about fireworks now is ¡­ I probably won¡¯t go outside and enjoy our country's pastime of blowing up fireworks,¡± he said. ¡°It¡¯s done enough. Trauma, inside of my head ¡­ I don't like loud noises anymore.¡±Instead, the electricity estimator might work on his rehab exercise, adding to the progress he's already understandably proud of."You look them in the eye and shake with your right hand. It's fitting that the orange-hued, googly-eyed mascot once written off as nightmare fuel made a 7-year-old fan's dream come true.Gritty, the idiosyncratic mascot of the National Hockey League's Philadelphia Flyers, made a rare off-ice appearance Tuesday to surprise Caiden O'Rourke, a double amputee with two rare conditions, after he was fitted with a custom prosthetic leg adorned with Gritty's unblinking face.Caiden, who's a few days shy of 8, was born with ectrodactyly, a bone deformity that means he's missing some bones and digits on his hands and feet, and amniotic band syndrome, which resulted in the amputation of his lower right leg in the womb, Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia said in a statement.As a young and growing double amputee, he's regularly fitted for new prosthetics, the hospital said. And as a true Philadelphian, he prefers them peppered with the logos of his favorite local teams.When the Flyers' resident monster caught wind of Caiden's request for his new left leg -- orange, of course, covered in miniature Grittys -- he waddled on in to Caiden's hospital room, flanked by two Flyers cheerleaders.Mouth agape, Caiden hugged his hero, who gave him a custom jersey. Bugatti's latest creation, though, sets a new bar in price and exclusivity. Bugatti's La Voiture Noire cost €16.7 million, or almost million, including taxes. Before taxes, the car cost .5 million.According to Bugatti, La Voiture Noire is the most expensive new car ever sold and only one will be made. Bugatti did not reveal the identity of the buyer. It is someone with an enormous attachment to the Bugatti brand, the automaker said. It's also clearly someone with immense financial resources.Bugatti's new La Voiture Noire is designed to recall the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic of the 1930s. Only four of those cars were made and, today, they're among the most valuable cars in the world. They can be worth more than million, according to Hagerty Insurance, a company that tracks collector car values. One of those cars became known as "La Voiture Noire" which means simply, the black car. Only three are known to survive. The fourth seems to have disappeared shortly before the German invasion of France during World War II. In his first TV interview since he was charged with sexual abuse last month, a tearful R. Kelly says he is "fighting" for his life.In a teaser for an interview that will air in full over two days starting Wednesday on "CBS This Morning," Kelly says allegations he slept with underage girls are not true and a product of "people," whom he did not identify specifically in the released clip, "going back to my past.""They're going back to the past and they trying to add all of this stuff now to that, to make all of the stuff that's going on now [feel] real to people," he tells Gayle King.At one point, Kelly points to the camera and says it would be stupid of him to hold girls against their will."Use your common sense. ... Forget the blogs, forget how you feel about me. Hate me if you want to; love me if you want. But just use your common sense," he says, raising his voice. "How stupid would it be for me ... with my crazy past and what I've been through?"Kelly then appears to begin crying."I didn't do this stuff. This is not me.
