SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego is paying out 5,000 after a violent police dog takedown.The man in a viral video sued the police department for excessive force.10News found out that this isn’t the first time the use of a police dog has been questioned.TIMELINE: San Diego K-9 bitesThe San Diego Police department has relied more on the K-9 unit in the last several years. Police say stats show a sharp increase in the number of times a police dog was deployed and someone was bitten from 2013 to 2016.There were also more dogs and handlers employed within that same three-year time period.Police say that has changed this year. Lt. Scott Wahl says the K-9 units have been to more than 12,000 calls resulting in only 37 bites.One of the more recent bites took place in October. In that incident, the K-9 put an end to a police chase in South Bay.Currently, there are 33 dogs and handlers. The dogs go through an initial 10-week training program followed by four hours of maintenance training a week and 15 minutes of obedience work every day. 1067

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The mother of a San Diego middle school student is begging for more answers from school administrators after she says other students threatened to shoot and stab her son. “I’m not willing to play Russian roulette with my kid’s life,” states Vanessa Flores. In a 10News exclusive, we interviewed her and her thirteen year-old son, Daniel, at their home on Tuesday. She says she pulled Daniel out of downtown’s KIPP Adelante charter middle school on Tuesday morning. It was two weeks ago when Daniel says he got in a fight with a couple of students. He says over their lunch break they were saying, “What are we going to do with Daniel? Are we going to jump him? Let’s jump him. Let’s bring the gun.” Daniel tells us he them heard one of them add, “The gun’s too much. Let’s bring the knife.” Vanessa showed us text messages that she says she exchanged with the school’s principal the night of the incident. She says she later met with administrators. “I just wanted the authorities to be contacted and made aware of the situation,” she adds. For days, she says her family could not get clear answers about any action the school was taking.  With tears in his eyes, Daniel described for us the anxiety he felt in the school hallways in the days following the alleged threats. “I’d think, what’s the next move? What are they going to do to me when I pass by the hallway? What do they have or what are they hiding?” “I’ve told [the school] that I’m in fear with the climate right now with all these shootings. Everybody’s talking about red flags. I’m giving [the school] the red flags on a silver platter. Please help me,” says Vanessa. On Tuesday, she says she picked Daniel up the from school after getting confirmation from school administrators that KIPP Adelante would not get the San Diego Police Department involved. She tells us she no longer felt safe keeping him on that campus. After picking him up from school, she says she took him to the San Diego Police Department to try to file a report. San Diego Police confirm with 10News that there was a misunderstanding that she was referring to a charter school and not a regular San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) public school. She says SDPD sent her to SDUSD school police, which don’t handle investigations related to local charter schools. The SDUSD school police apparently sent her back to SDPD. SDPD confirms its officers took a report on Tuesday afternoon and now the juvenile service team is investigating the reported threats. On Tuesday afternoon, KIPP Adelante charter school principal Monique McKeown sent us the following statement. “Two weeks ago, we had an 8th grade student report that two of his classmates threatened to harm him with a weapon. We fully investigated the matter and found no credible evidence that the students in question threatened to use a weapon against their classmate. San Diego Unified Police Services confirmed that we handled the investigation appropriately. At KIPP we respond swiftly to all potential threats to student safety.” The referenced "San Diego Unified Police Services" is also known as SDUSD school police. A spokesperson for KIPP Adelante later clarified that SDUSD school police did not conduct its own investigation. Rather, it apparently reviewed and approved the school’s own investigation. The spokesperson for KIPP Adelante also reported that the teens who made the apparent threats are still students at the school. 3559

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The FDA Wednesday gave emergency approval to a San Diego company's test for COVID-19 antibodies.Easy Check, from Truvian Sciences, can test for COVID-19 antibodies in under 10 minutes."They've now given us the right to market the product and sell the product as a safe and effective solution for this type of testing," said Truvian President and CEO Jeff Hawkins.The test uses a drop of blood on a testing strip. Within 10 minutes, it shows a marking on the strip that indicates if you have the antibodies or not.Hawkins said these kinds of tests are vital to the future of the coronavirus pandemic."This type of testing, today, is helping us understand how many people had an infection," said Hawkins. "Over time, this type of testing may help us understand how long that vaccine is good for and how long you are protected.He added, "Using these very deployable, simple tests to monitor this is one way we can track people over time and see how this evolves."The Easy Check test went through independent testing by four separate laboratories. They found it is 99% accurate in detecting both the presence of the COVID-19 antibody and identifying it among other antibodies.Right now, the test requires a full blood draw, but Truvian is working on a version of the test that only needs a finger prick.Hawkins said his company will sell it to medical labs and offices for per test, keeping it affordable for patients who want to take the test, although individual tests may cost more to help doctors and labs cover their costs."Our core mission as a company before COVID was to make testing more accessible and make testing less expensive," said Hawkins. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The co-founder and CEO of the Super Dentists said that during the current COVID-19 pandemic, patients have been hesitant to get dental work done."The American Dental Association did a survey, and about 75 to 80 percent of the patients across the country feel comfortable about going back to the dentist. About 15 percent want a vaccine before they go back,” said Dr. Kami Hoss.And while he understands the precautions people are making, Hoss said a recent study indicates dentist offices have shown to be safe."There have been zero cases of COVID related to any dentist offices,” Hoss said.And to further help ease the minds of dental patients, Hoss has just written a book titled, "If Your Mouth Could Talk.""I wanted to know what keeps parents up at night and what their worries are. I did some research, and I had 300 pages of stats on what keeps parents up at night. When I read them, I realized that so many of them could be related back to their mouths, and their kids mouths. So, I decided to write a book about it,” Hoss told ABC 10News.He's a dentist and an author, but that is not all. Hoss has a love of music, so he decided to write and compose songs for the Super Dentists.
