SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving under the influence arrests have dropped noticeably in cities where ride sharing programs have expanded, a new study says.An analysis performed by Moll Law Group and the University of California says DUI arrests in San Diego dropped 32% from 2015 to 2016.The study also looked at four other major cities with declines in California: 28% in San Jose, 26% in Sacramento, 14% for Los Angeles and the San Francisco-Oakland area.“We still seeing quite a few impaired people, they’re just not sitting in the front seat,” said Mark McCullough with San Diego Police Department’s traffic division.McCullough says the declining trend began a few a years ago when more new forms of transportation became available.“Five years ago we’d run a DUI checkpoint on a Friday night and we’d arrest 20 people and up,” said McCullough, “now on any given Friday if we arrest 10-15 people that’s a busy night for us.”Experts believe there may be other reasons behind the figures declining, but it’s still a number they don’t mind going down.“You’re not using your brain to your full potential if you get arrested for a DUI,” said McCullough, “there are just so many forms of alternative transportation.” 1225

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members in the South Bay mourning the death of a beloved grandfather and foster parent from coronavirus.Enrique Gonzalez, 68, was doing everything right. He was staying at home. His family was shopping for him. A month ago, he got sick."Runny nose, body aches, fever," said his nephew, Fernando Gonzalez.Fernando says within a week, Gonzalez tested positive for COVID-19."As soon as he had trouble breathing and talking, we took him to the hospital," said Fernando.Doctors put him on a ventilator and into a medically induced coma. Weeks later, after suffering cardiac arrest, his condition deteriorated. A nurse helped his large family talk to him through Facetime calls."Told him jokes, playing music for him ... praying for him. Really tough not to be in the room," said Fernando.A week ago, Gonzalez passed away."Just devastating to everybody," said Fernando.Fernando says the family now grieving the loss of a hard-working man with the biggest of hearts. After Gonzalez retired from decades working in construction, he and his wife decided to become foster parents, fostering over 20 children in the past 4 years."Even when he passed away, still fostering an infant ... All of a sudden, you're reminded that this COVID-19 does not discriminate ... goes after whoever picks it up. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Detectives are searching for two suspects who shot a 17-year-old in the back in Golden Hill Sunday, according to San Diego Police.The shooting happened on the 2700 block of Treat Street around 9:20 p.m.The teenage boy was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.San Diego Police said the shooting is suspected to be gang-related and detectives are searching for two suspects.The two suspects were described by police as Hispanic men driving a white or silver sedan.Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to gall the San Diego Police gang unit at 619-531-2847 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Get ready for sunny days at SeaWorld this summer, as the cast of a television favorite comes to San Diego.SeaWorld will host Sesame Street favorites including Elmo, Cookie Monster, and others with themed floats, music, and two performances along the parade route during the Sesame Street Party Parade.The parade will feature 10 massive floats depicting the areas kids know and love, like Mr. Hooper's Store and the Count's Castle.More than 20 dancers will jump and jive alongside Elmo down the parade route, along with a cast of furry friends.During the two mid-parade shows, performers will jump rope, hula hoop, and groove to guests' delight. One show will star Rosita, a Sesame Street favorite known for her guitar skills. The parade can be seen on weekends running from May 25 - Sept. 1 at the park. 830

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Getting an education these days seems to be getting more and more expensive. But The San Diego Foundation has millions in scholarship money to award to local students pursuing a variety of secondary education options. Students like Jawid Habib, who received money through several years of college and law school. As the son of Afghan immigrants, Habib says his accomplishments meant a great deal, "I'll never forget the moment that I got my college acceptance letter at UCSD and I handed it to my mom and I'll never forget the tears in her eyes and I'll never forget the tears in my father's eyes when they saw that acceptance letter."As happy as that moment was, the reality of paying for school was still a challenge, until he found the Foundation. "It gave me peace of mind, that's one of the biggest things it gave me peace of mind because I was more focused on success rather than focused on how to afford my education," Habib said.Danielle Valenciano is the director of community scholarships at the foundation and tells 10News that last year the non-profit gave out more than .6 million to nearly 900 students. "If we're able to help offset hunger or homelessness or their books or a bus pass so they can get to school every day, we're doing our job as a community to help these students succeed," Valenciano said. The application process for next year is already underway, and there's money for all kinds of education, including community college, career and technical schools and teaching credential programs. Valenciano also says some of their donors are looking for so-called diamonds in the rough, "Students who may not have the best high school grades but there's something there and they have aspirations and they have a goal, these donors want to help these students."And hopefully give them an opportunity to achieve their goals, like Habib who is now a practicing attorney. 1921
