SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Poway gun store is set to sell 1 million rounds of ammunition by the end of the year.It’s called the “1 million round month.” Managers at Poway Weapons and Gear Range are stocking up for the sale that begins on Black Friday. Customers can get their hands on all the ammunition they need before changes come to gun stores next year. The law, which kicks off in July 2019 says, in addition to a gun permit, gun owners will have to pass a background check to buy ammo.RELATED: March poll shows how San Diegans?feel about gun control“Then when they buy ammo we have to log into a database and report how much ammo they buy,” says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales Operations at the store.The data logged will then be sent to the Department of Justice. “We need to remain vigilant that guns and ammunition don’t get in the hands of people that shouldn’t have them,” says Ron Marcus with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention. SAN DIEGO, Calif. — As we work to manage the pressure of the pandemic, a new device could take away some of the stress.San Diego State University (SDSU) engineers, biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and public health experts have worked together to develop a wearable device to detect early, remote detection of lung function abnormalities.“Knowing the current status of our health, I think that will give a lot of benefit," said Kee Moon, a researcher, and professor of mechanical engineering at SDSU. The size of a Band-Aid, the wearable device contains medical-grades sensors, collecting more than 4,000 data points per second. Placed on a person’s chest, it monitors heart and lung health, looking for problems in real-time.The device can detect abnormalities in the lungs before a person shows COVID-19 symptoms, alerting doctors before there’s a true emergency and hopefully preventing hospitalizations.By monitoring heart health, users can also get a better sense of their stress levels.“Understanding the level of stress you’re getting is important, as important as the other physical health monitoring," said Moon. Moon was already working on the technology before the pandemic to monitor other health conditions like asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and lung cancer. But COVID-19 accelerated and pivoted the focus of the research.The team hopes to license the technology to a company that can produce and sell the device, likely at a price of around a few hundred dollars.“Seeing that would be a tremendous joy for me," said Moon.Moon is hopeful the wearable could be sold next year and that it will continue helping patients after the pandemic is over, delivering a sense of control in a time of such uncertainty. 1740

San Diego is weighing major new rules that would ban people from living in their cars near schools and homes.The proposal would block anyone from living in their cars within 500 feet of a school or residence, and also prohibit them from living in their cars on most other city streets between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.San Diegans living in their cars have had free reign since a judge ruled in August that its current laws were too vague. That's led to concerns from some residents in beach areas, who say they have seen people drinking in cars, as well as urinating and defecating on neighborhood streets. "I used to feel very safe walking around throughout La Jolla, Pacific Beach and everything, and there's a lot of times I don't feel as safe as I used to," said Sarah Bonesteel, a Crown Point resident. The issue of in-car living has grown along with San Diego's high housing costs. The car is one of the last pieces of shelter a homeless person may possess, Mayor Kevin Faulconer noted Tuesday. At a news conference, the mayor announced that the city would open an additional parking lot for people to legally sleep in their cars. It will be in the overflow lot across from SDCCU Stadium, providing access to housing and other services."The goal for every person or family staying here will be to access resources to get back into long-term housing," Faulconer said. Meanwhile, the city's Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee will consider the citywide restrictions Wednesday. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - The sound of illegal fireworks in the San Diego area is not uncommon around the Fourth of July, but there is an increase in activity this year. San Diego Police Department Sergeant Matthew Botkin said from May 21 to June 21, 2019, the SDPD received 37 calls regarding illegal firework reports. During that same time period in 2020, there were 236 calls.Related: Fireworks continue boom in New York as residents wonder why the noise“I was sleeping, it was like 12 midnight, 1 a.m. and I heard explosions kinda close to my window,” said Stina Pezze, a Mission Beach resident.Jamie Young, a Pacific Beach resident, also has heard them at night, saying she’s lived in the area for 16 years and is used to the typical occasional illegal fireworks around the summer holiday, but this year has been much worse and started earlier.“They started easily a couple weeks ago and it would just be random weeknights we’d get woken up by them at 2 in the morning,” said Young.Neighbors are chiming in online asking where they’re coming from and why there seem to be more. Sergeant Botkin said the simple answer is that they don’t know."I'm not quite sure why the increase, I don’t have a reason why that’s the case but there’s certainly an uptick in them and we hope they go down," he said, also pointing out the difficulty in issuing citations. “We’re always more attentive this time of year to calls like this but you can imagine it’s really kinda difficult to nail down where these are coming from unless it’s coming out of your backyard."He noted that neighbors play a key role in reporting people using fireworks because citing specific locations makes police response easier. He also mentioned how dangerous fireworks can be, with 180 people across the country going to the hospital every day for firework-related injuries around this time of year.
