It seems like common sense, but many Americans do it. Although remote start technology has grown, thousands of cars were stolen in 2018 due to people leaving their car unattended to warm up during the winter. One insurance group is reminding Americans not to leave their cars running unattended.According to National Insurance Crime Bureau, 81,911 vehicles were stolen with the keys or fobs left in them in 2018. "We always warn consumers about the dangers of leaving a vehicle unlocked and not taking the fob or key with them, but leaving the car running with a key or fob in the vehicle is a prime target for an opportunistic thief," said NICB Chief Operating Officer Jim Schweitzer. The NICB also reminded drivers that in many states and municipalities, leaving a car with the key in the ignition and running could be against the law. For instance, in Ohio, it is a minor misdemeanor punishable by a 0 fine to leave a car running unattended on public property (such as the side of the road). In Colorado, the crime is a class B traffic infraction, punishable with a fine of up to 0. The NICB offered the following tips: Lock the vehicle, set the alarm, and take all keys or fobs.Do not leave the garage door opener in the vehicle.Take a picture of your registration on your cell phone, and do not leave the registration or other papers with personal information in the vehicle.Never leave a car unlocked and running to warm it up or while stopping for a quick cup of coffee. It only takes a moment for the opportunistic thief to jump inside and drive off. 1575

It was a quiet afternoon at the White House toward the end of a four-day week. Network correspondents were preparing for their evening newscasts, cameramen were scattered throughout the briefing room and outside, some reporters had stepped out for coffee.Minutes after 4:00 p.m., a voice came on the overhead speaker announcing that press secretary Sarah Sanders would hold a briefing in "five minutes."The scramble was on.For a White House that has held increasingly rare briefings, the short notice was unusual yet not surprising. And as the press appearances have shrunk, the importance of each opportunity to ask questions has increased.Still photographers ran to secure their spots. Television camera crews and audio technicians rushed to turn on, focus and color balance cameras and wire up correspondents for live shots. The White House audiovisual staff turned the podium microphones on and the lights up at the last minute. And when Sanders took the podium, instead of taking questions she introduced a "very special guest" -- the President of the United States."Hello, everybody, beautiful place, I haven't seen it," President Donald Trump said as he walked in, wishing the press assembled a happy new year.Thursday marked Trump's first official appearance at the briefing room podium nearly two years into his administration. But despite being billed as a press briefing, and taking place in the briefing room, Trump did not deliver a briefing (he took no questions) and instead gave a statement pressing for his border wall. His visit was such a surprise that the podium wasn't dressed with a presidential seal. Journalists were still filling in seats in around the back of the briefing room, which is normally packed and standing room only for briefings, as the President began to speak. He offered his warm congratulations to newly elected House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, praising what he called her "tremendous, tremendous achievement."On the first day of divided government during his administration, Trump cited infrastructure as one area where the White House could work with the Democratic-controlled House. Then, Trump made a push for his border wall, introducing some members of the National Border Patrol Council and National ICE Council. The remarks came on the 13th day of a partial government shutdown as Democrats have officially taken control of the House and negotiations to fund the government have reached a stalemate due to ongoing disputes about border security and wall funding. The White House won't say whether the President would accept a funding package with less than billion for a border wall, but leadership from both parties in Congress are expected to meet with the President at the White House Friday morning. The President said he had been sitting in the Oval Office with the border patrol agents in a previously scheduled meeting and decided he wanted to "see the press" so the agents could "tell them about the importance of the wall.""First time I've ever done this. The first time I've done it, and I've done it for you (the National Border Patrol Council members). And I'm very proud of it," he said.Trump refused to take questions about the government shutdown, walking out of the briefing room along with the border patrol agents, Sanders, communications director Bill Shine and social media director Dan Scavino, a mere eight minutes after entering. One reporter, who had gotten word of the briefing but was across town on Capitol Hill, rushed back across Pennsylvania Avenue, but missed it altogether."It was over before I even got there," the reporter texted. 3618

Kentucky Democrat Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot who rose to national prominence last year in her failed campaign for Congress against Republican Andy Barr, is turning her sights on a new target: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. In a three-minute video released Tuesday, McGrath said McConnell has "bit by bit, year by year, turned Washington into something we all despise.""I'm running for Senate because it shouldn't be like this," McGrath added.McGrath's candidacy marks a significant recruiting coup for Democrats. She emerged as an unlikely fundraising juggernaut in her congressional race, bringing in millions of dollars after her campaign released a biographical video that went viral, and becoming a Democratic celebrity in the process. But it was not enough for McGrath to best Barr, who won by about 3 points in the 2018 election. In the race against McConnell, McGrath appears poised to run as a moderate seeking to break the partisan gridlock in Washington. In an interview Tuesday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," McGrath said she had watched the Democratic presidential debate and was concerned that many candidates were positioning themselves too far to the left. 1193

LAS VEGAS — In a town that has made its mark on betting and gambling, there's one thing on which folks wish they wager: elections."Since football started on Saturday and Sunday, we're jammed here, but you'd be surprised with all the people here is it legal to bet on the federal election," said Jimmy Vaccaro, a betting expert with South Point Hotel & Casino.Vacarro says the sportsbook received calls from across the U.S. and around the world after the last election, wondering if election betting was real. Some of those calls from other countries asked which candidate was the favorite and why.Vaccaro says U.S. elections are a big event for the European Book."It is their third or fourth biggest day of the year when they have odds on our people over here," Vaccaro said.If election betting were to become legal in America, Vaccaro is confident sports betting would be blown out of the water."Betting on an election would make the Super Bowl look like a high school football game," Vaccaro said.Election betting is a two-for-one as Vaccaro calls it. Bettors could walk away with a chunk of change, perhaps, the change they want for America.Vaccaro believes while it's not legal in America, in time, it will be a part of the "sports" book.He guesses at least a decade until it happens and becomes accepted."For the younger people to get into power, and they've grown up around this and grown up around the legalization of sports betting and sees nothing wrong with it, its just another past time," Vaccaro said. 1529
