UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (Xinhua) -- To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first human space flight, accomplished on April 12, 1961 by Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the Russian Federal Space Agency and the ITAR-TASS information agency organized an exhibition which was opened here on Thursday."The first human space flight is not one of the most significant events of the past century, but of human history in general," Vitaly Churkin, the Russian permanent representative to the UN, said at the opening ceremony."It's a symbol of courage, thirst for knowledge, and progress," Churkin said.The exhibition contained archival photos telling the story of the first human space flight and of those who made it possible, and historic pictures of Gagarin.As part of the celebration of human space flight's 50th anniversary the UN Postal Administration designed postal stamps which will be issued on April 12, to tell the story of progress that humankind has made beyond earth's boundaries, as Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information put it."Fifty years have passed since that amazing voyage, but the legend of Gagarin's courage and journey to the 'final frontier' continues to be a source of inspiration for space exploration for peoples and nations around the world," Akasaka said at the opening of the exhibition.According to Akasaka, the exhibition "sparks people's imagination about what is possible through the peaceful use and exploration of outer space."Other attendees included Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov.Gagarin, also known as the Columbus of the Cosmos, traveled into outer space on the height of the Cold War when the Berlin Wall was built, at a moment when it was hardly impossible to imagine that more than 15 nations would work together in humanity' s permanent space outpost -- the International Space Station.The Russian icon of space spoke the historic words "the earth is blue, how wonderful. BEIJING, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- Forty people died in more than 118,000 cases of fire reported across China from February 2 to February 8, as Chinese revelers celebrated the Lunar New Year holiday with fireworks, according to a statement released Tuesday by the country's Ministry of Public Security.The number of cases jumped from the 7,480 fires reported during last year's Spring Festival holiday, which caused losses worth 28.5 million yuan. The incidents also injured 37 people and caused more than 56 million yuan (8.5 million U.S. dollars) in damages, which is almost double the figure from last year.However, this year's losses did not include a case in northeastern Liaoning Province where a five-star hotel in the city of Shenyang was set ablaze by fireworks on February 3.The fire, which caused no casualties, is possibly the country's largest fireworks accident during this year's Spring Festival celebrations.According to the statement, some 260,000 police and fire fighters across the country were mobilized for 24,800 fire control missions.The personnel rescued more than 1,600 people and evacuated tens of thousands. Fire departments have been strengthening monitoring of high-rise buildings, shopping malls, markets, construction sites and other crowded or vulnerable locations.Also, a total of 173 companies were suspended from operating for failing to meet fire prevention and control standards, according to the ministry.

XI'AN, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Archeologists in the northwestern Shaanxi Province confirmed Thursday, after weeks of lab work, that the bones they found in a bronze cooking vessel from a 2,400-year-old tomb belonged to a male dog under a year old.Altogether 37 bones were found in the cooking vessel, which was unearthed in November 2010 from a tomb near the Xianyang International Airport in the suburbs of Xi'an, said Liu Daiyun, a researcher with the Shaanxi Provincial Archeological Institute."When we opened the 20-cm tall cooking vessel, we were shocked to find bones and soup inside," said Liu.The bones and soup had all turned greenish, similar in color to the bronze container, he said.Cooking vessels were a typical offering Chinese once presented to their deceased ancestors, said Liu.The custom became prevalent around the Warring States Period (475 - 221 BC), the time Liu and his colleagues believed this dog stew was offered.Hu Songmei, a researcher who did most of the lab work to identify the bones, said they found the bones were "strikingly similar" to four complete sets of canine skeletons preserved at the institute's lab.The newly found bones, however, were smaller, indicating the dog was just a pup, said Hu.Hu said further lab work was needed to tell the exact species of the canine. "Dogs were domesticated by humans at least 10,000 years ago, but the early dog species that evolved from wild wolves could be very different from today's pet dogs."Besides the dog bones, experts also found a wine-like liquid in another airtight kitchen ware from the same tomb. "Whoever the tomb owner was, he must have loved liquor and meat, so his sons wished he could still enjoy the feast in his grave."
