(KGTV) — After a series of delays, a project to revamp a stretch of Otay Mesa Road near San Ysidro High School is nearing completion.The city says it expects to reopen the half-mile portion of the road, from Hawken Drive to Saltaire Place, by the second week of May. The stretch of road has been closed since 2016, cutting off access to San Ysidro High School and the 905 freeway for residents of the Remington Hills neighborhood."You either hit all the stoplights going all the way out over to Picador (Blvd), or you have to go all the way around through San Ysidro, 805 to the 905," said Benjamin Bribiesca, who says the detour adds upwards of 15 to 20 minutes to his daily commute to his job in Eastlake.The city says some of the final work to be done includes grading, repaving, adding anti-graffiti materials, re-vegetation and some sidewalk improvements. The .5 million project also added a protected sidewalk for San Ysidro High School students, who for more than a decade had been walking on a dirt path close to cars passing on the winding road.The project was delayed more than a year due to the addition of a water line, relocation of utilities, poor soil conditions, unseasonably rainy winters, and an April to July moratorium due to cooper's hawk nesting season. 1306

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano was suspended for 80 games on Tuesday by MLB after he tested positive for a banned substance as part of MLB's screening for performance-enhancing drugs. In a statement released by Cano, he claimed he took furosemide, which Cano said he took for a legitimate medical purpose. But the drug allegedly is commonly used as a masking agent. The drug could be used for high blood pressure, or to reduce extra fluid in the body caused by liver disease, heart failure or kidney disease, WebMD says. "Recently I learned that I tested positive for a substance called furosemide, which is not a performance-enhancing substance," Cano said in a statement issued by the MLB Players Association. "Furosemide is used to treat various medical conditions in the United States and the Dominican Republic. This substance was given to me by a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat a medical ailment."While I did not realize at the time that I was given a medication that was banned, I obviously now wish that I had been more careful."Cano is an eight-time MLB All-Star. SAN MARCOS, Calif. (KGTV) — A 23-year-old man is behind bars after leading San Diego Sheriff's deputies on a short pursuit in a vehicle that was reported stolen.Deputies received a broadcast from Carlsbad Police of a stolen vehicle on Sunday just after 1 p.m. in the area of Palomar Airport Rd. heading toward San Marcos. Nearby deputies began searching the area and located the vehicle unoccupied in the parking lot of a Target on Business Park Dr. in Vista.While they waited for an ASTREA helicopter and canine unit, deputies set up surveillance on the vehicle. After a few minutes, the suspected driver, identified as Dylan Kidd, returned and deputies moved in toward the vehicle, according to the Sheriff's Department (SDSO).Kidd started up the vehicle and led deputies on a four- to five-minute pursuit, during which deputies say he drove recklessly out of the parking lot and onto nearby streets. Kidd eventually left the vehicle and fled into a nearby canyon, according to the department.The vehicle, however, continued and crashed into the garage door of a home on White Sands Drive, causing some minor damage.With the ASTREA helicopter above, deputies were led to Kidd's location after about six minutes and he surrendered to deputies, SDSO said. Kidd was booked into jail and charged with felony evading, vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, shoplift/burglary, and hit and run. 1405

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego Fire-Rescue is on scene of a brush fire burning in San Ysidro Monday afternoon. According to department spokeswoman Mónica Mu?oz, the fire sparked near State Route 905 west and Caliente Avenue in an area near San Ysidro High School. The fire burned about one and a half acres before the forward rate of spread was stopped. No structures were threatened and no one was injured, according to Mu?oz.Three San Diego Fire-Rescue engines and two federal fire brush engines and a helicopter team responded to the blaze.
