Mack Beggs defended his Texas wrestling state title on Saturday by winning the girls Class 6A 110-pound class, to the chagrin of some of those in attendance in Cypress, Texas, the Dallas Morning News reported. Beggs, who was born female, is a transgender male who is only allowed to wrestle against girls. Texas' University Interscholastic League requires that athletes compete in the gender listed on their birth certificate. Beggs told the Dallas Morning News that he has not gone through any gender reassignment surgeries. But that did not stop those in the crowd from heckling Beggs. "They're saying 'steroids.' They're saying, 'Oh, they're beating up on girls,'" he told the Morning News. "It just comes down to technique and who has the most heart. I put too much blood, sweat and tears, I put too much B.S. into this journey that I wanted to come out on top."If Beggs had his choice, he would be competing against boys. "What can I tell people? I can tell the state legislature to change the policy, but I can't tell them to change it right now," Beggs told reporters. "All I can hope for is that they come to their [senses] and realize this is stupid and we should change the policies to conform to other people in my position."Among those who believe it was not a fair bout was Beggs' semifinal opponent Kayla Fitts, who went 52-0 as a senior for Cypress Ranch High School. "The strength definitely was the difference. I didn't anticipate how strong he was," Fitts told the Morning News."I understand if you want to transition your gender," she added. "I understand that totally. But there's a time and a place."Part of the issue has been that Beggs is taking a low dose of testosterone. Although testosterone injections are prohibited for athletes, an exception is made for Beggs due to the state's "safe harbor" provision, which allows for injections when used for valid medical purposes. Beggs said that he plans on wrestling against males in college. To read more of the Dallas Morning News' report, click here.  2153

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville Metro Police Department has released the incident report from the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor in her apartment, but it’s almost entirely blank. The release of the report comes nearly three months after the 26-year-old ER technician was shot and killed by officers in her South End home in the early morning hours of March 13.The four-page report, obtained by the Courier Journal and New York Magazine, lists some basic details like the time, date, case number, incident location and the victim’s name and age.The report also lists Taylor’s injuries as “none,” even though she was shot eight times before dying in the hall of her apartment. The report lists three “offenders” – officers Jon Mattingly, 47, Myles Cosgrove, 42, and Brett Hankison, 44.Under charges, the document describes the incident as a “death investigation – LMPD involved” and says there was no forced entry, even though officers used a battering ram to knock down Taylor’s door.Lastly, for the “public narrative” section of the report, the department only wrote “PIU investigation."In a statement obtained by the Courier Journal, the police department acknowledged errors in the report and said they were the result of a reporting program creating a paper file. The city’s mayor, Greg Fischer, has called the report “unacceptable.”“Full stop. It’s issues like this that erode public confidence in @LMPD's ability to do its job, and that’s why I’ve ordered an external top-to-bottom review of the department,” wrote Fischer on Twitter Wednesday night. “I am sorry for the additional pain to the Taylor family and our community.”Officers responded to Taylor’s home with a no-knock search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. Records show that she was not the main target of the probe, but she and her apartment were named on the warrant.During the incident, Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, has said that he thought the officers were intruders and fired a warning shot that struck one of the cops in the leg. He was arrested on an attempted murder charge that night, but that charge has since been dropped.Since Taylor’s death, the three officers involved, and the detective who requested the no-knock warrant, have been placed on administrative reassignment, the Courier Journal reports. And, the FBI has launched its own investigation into the case. "The FBI will collect all available facts and evidence and will ensure that the investigation is conducted in a fair, thorough and impartial manner," the FBI Louisville Field Office said in a statement. "As this is an ongoing investigation, we are not able to comment further at this time." 2665

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer must be a big fan of Discovery Channel's "Shark Week."Whitmer was recorded referencing the television event while waiting to deliver a speech remotely at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday. The video, shared on Twitter by The Recount, showed Whitmer joking with attendees at UAW Local 652 in Lansing, where she delivered her address."It's not just Shark Week, it's Shark Week mother f******," she said, while simply mouthing the expletives without saying them aloud. The comment got laughs from the people who were in the room at the time of the speech."I have learned about the hot mic," Whitmer later said. 657

Many districts across the country are looking ahead to this fall and trying to make plans about how students could, or should, return to the classroom. A nationwide pediatric group is urging local leaders, parents and education systems to collaborate and create policies that allow for as much in-person learning this fall as possible. The American Academy of Pediatrics released guidance on their website based on in-person attendance at schools being not only fundamental to children’s mental, social and physical development, but also playing “a critical role in addressing racial and social inequality … it is critical to reflect on the differential impact SARS-CoV-2 and the associated school closures have had on different races, ethnic and vulnerable populations.”The recommendations include masks, physical distancing, and outdoor play, with more specifics. Such as, the AAP recommends placing desks 3-to-6 feet apart as long as it allows children to attend school; the 3-foot distance can be used when face coverings are also being worn.Middle and high schools should avoid groupings of students inside doing activities involving exhalation, i.e. singing, exercising, etc. according to the recommendations. The AAP also encourages limiting locker use and moving from room-to-room for classes. The guidance extends to school faculty and staff, with the AAP urging districts to make sure adults in schools get the support they need to set a good example and stay healthy.“In the same way that students are going to need support to effectively return to school and to be prepared to be ready to process the information they are being taught, teachers cannot be expected to be successful at teaching children without having their mental health needs supported. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last updated their guidance to schools and care facilities in April and it is focused on quickly stopping an outbreak, cleaning facilities and maintaining continuity in education and meal accessibility.AAP acknowledges any school policy this fall should be flexible and nimble, able to respond to new information about the coronavirus and specific needs in each school, district and region.“Although schools should be prepared to be agile to meet evolving needs and respond to increasing knowledge related to the pandemic and may need to institute partial or complete closures when the public health need requires, they should recognize that staff, students, and families will benefit from sufficient time to understand and adjust to changes in routine and practices.” 2591

Microsoft said in a blog post on Thursday that it has discovered efforts by Iran, China and Russia to launch cyberattacks on the presidential campaigns of Joe Biden and Donald Trump.Tom Burt, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for customer security and trust, wrote that Microsoft was able to stop the cyberattacks from happening, and have notified the campaigns of the three countries’ efforts.“We disclose attacks like these because we believe it’s important the world knows about threats to democratic processes,” Burt wrote. “It is critical that everyone involved in democratic processes around the world, both directly or indirectly, be aware of these threats and take steps to protect themselves in both their personal and professional capacities. We report on nation-state activity to our customers and more broadly when material to the public, regardless of the actor’s nation-state affiliation. We are taking extra steps to protect customers involved in elections, government and policymaking.”Last month, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence released a statement outlining efforts by Iran, China and Russia to attempt to undermine this year’s presidential election.“Ahead of the 2020 U.S. elections, foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process,” William Evanina, director of the United States National Counterintelligence and Security Center, said. "They may also seek to compromise our election infrastructure for a range of possible purposes, such as interfering with the voting process, stealing sensitive data, or calling into question the validity of the election results. However, it would be difficult for our adversaries to interfere with or manipulate voting results at scale.”As part of Evanina’s assessment, he said that China and Iran were attempting to seek a favorable outcome for Biden, while Russia was working to ensure a favorable outcome for Trump.“As Americans, we are all in this together; our elections should be our own,” Evanina previously said. “Foreign efforts to influence or interfere with our elections are a direct threat to the fabric of our democracy. Neutralizing these threats requires not just a whole-of-government approach, but a whole-of-nation effort.”The Trump campaign responded to Microsoft’s cybersecurity report."As President Trump’s re-election campaign, we are a large target, so it is not surprising to see malicious activity directed at the campaign or our staff,” Thea McDonald, deputy national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said. “We work closely with our partners, Microsoft and others, to mitigate these threats. We take cybersecurity very seriously and do not publicly comment on our efforts.”The Biden campaign also responded to the report."We are aware of reports from Microsoft that a foreign actor has made unsuccessful attempts to access the non-campaign email accounts of individuals affiliated with the campaign," the campaign said. "We have known from the beginning of our campaign that we would be subject to such attacks and we are prepared for them. Biden for President takes cybersecurity seriously, we will remain vigilant against these threats, and will ensure that the campaign's assets are secured." 3443
