SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A successful regular season could mean some end-of-the-year award hardware for members of the San Diego Padres.On Monday, the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) revealed the finalists for National League Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, and Manager of the Year.Manny Machado is among the finalists for National League MVP. The Padres’ star third baseman, Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman are all in the running for the award.Noticeably absent from the finalists list is Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who was considered among the favorites for the MVP award throughout the season.The last Padres player to be named NL MVP was Ken Caminiti in 1996.The NL Rookie of the Year finalists include Padres second baseman Jake Cronenworth, Alec Bohm of the Phillies, and Devin Williams of the Brewers.If Cronenworth wins the award, he would be the first Padres ROY winner since catcher Benito Santiago in 1987.The Padres’ first-year manager, Jayce Tingler, was named a finalist for the NL’s Manager of the Year award. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Southern California athlete said his life was changed forever from a stem cell product he said came from a San Diego company. “It’s been tough. And it’s still tough,” said Alex Reyes. Team 10 interviewed Reyes at a San Bernardino park, where he took a few moments to play with his young children. Those are the moments he treasures because last year, even holding his kids was something he could not do. “I couldn’t walk for about three and a half to four weeks. I was on a bedpan. It was one of the hardest things I had to go through in my life,” Reyes said.This is coming from a man used to taking punches. He has several accomplishments in mixed martial arts, including King of the Cage Junior Welterweight and Lightweight Champion, as well as the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Absolute Purple Belt Champion. Reyes was signed to the UFC back in September of 2017 to compete in the Lightweight Division. In the UFC, he was known as the Executioner. “It was just the beginning for me,” Reyes said.He started doing stem cell injections last year to help with an old back injury. “It was kind of nagging,” he told Team 10.The first one he tried went well. “It helps regenerate the tissue… there was improvement, and I felt better,” he said. The second time, Reyes said he went to a different clinic in Las Vegas in June 2018. According to his lawsuit, the product used was from the ReGen Series?, developed and manufactured by Genetech. The court documents show Health Departments in Texas and Florida received notification of bacteria in patients who received those injections. Genetech, which used to operate at a building on Bunker Hill Street on the edge of Pacific Beach, is now closed. However, federal regulators are currently looking into the company’s operations. A letter issued late last year by the Federal Drug Administration warned Genetech about several violations with “potential serious risks to patients.” The FDA and Centers for Disease Control are aware of at least 12 patients who received Genetech products. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Across the country and here in San Diego County, large groups of people have taken to the streets to protest over the death of George Floyd and racial injustices.The mass gatherings have health professionals concerned that we could see another spike in COVID-19 cases."While we understand why they’re congregating and the anger that’s out there right now, the unfortunate consequences are probably going to be that there will be more people infected and more people coming to our hospital systems," said Dr. David Pride, an infectious disease specialist and the director of Molecular Microbiology at UC San Diego Health. "Sometimes, passion sort of overtakes being cognizant of the fact that this is a global pandemic."That passion has been very evident in San Diego as hundreds of protesters filled many streets for several days."When we see that people are not social distancing, we get concerned that we’re going to see spikes," said Pride.Whether you are a protester, an officer, or a member of the press covering the demonstrations, COVID-19 remains a problem for everyone.Social distancing was nonexistent at the protests across the county, and while many people did have on masks, others did not. To add to the risk, officers also deployed tear gas, causing some demonstrators to cough into the crowds.“The idea that some of them are now coughing, that’s concerning,” said Pride. “The easiest way to spread the virus is through respiratory and oral droplets. There could be asymptomatic people in these crowds, spreading the virus to a lot of people who are vulnerable, and only time will tell what the effects of this are for the San Diego area.”The public gatherings have been some of the largest we’ve seen in a while, in addition to recent protests to stay-at-home orders.Pride said he and other health professionals are not only concerned about the demonstration, but also about the loosening of restrictions and reopening.“We’re starting to notice differences in different parts of San Diego County. Certain parts are hotbeds for disease right now, and as we reopen and people start to mix from all different parts of San Diego, everyone is at risk,” he said. “This disease is not going anywhere, it’s going to be with us until there’s a proper vaccination.”Pride said UCSD Health has been preparing to increase the number of daily COVID-19 tests.“Right now, we’re testing somewhere around 800 people a day, and we’re gearing up to maybe even triple that if we can,” he said.Pride said it would take about a week or two to understand the consequences of the latest demonstrations. He does expect the hospitalization rate to increase.In the meantime, he said if you are not staying at home, the best thing you can continue to do while out in public is social distance and always wear a facial covering.“In the absence of a vaccine, two things that all of us can do are social distance as best we can and make certain we have a strict adherence to a masking policy,” he said. 3013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A University City woman is searching desperately for what she says is worthless to a thief, but priceless to her.Cassie Moua's wedding outfit, which her grandmother made for her over 15 years, was stolen out of the trunk of her husband's car the week after her wedding. "It's been sitting in a closet for 15 years, waiting for the day I get married," Cassie said. "I get married and a week later, it's gone."Cassie married David Lawrence on Feb. 29 at her father's house in Scripps Ranch. She wore a traditional Hmong wedding outfit, including a black jacket with embroidery, a black apron with embroidery, and a white skirt with a pink belt. That dress, however, is now in the hands of a thief. Sometime during the night of Friday, March 6, a thief got into David's car, stealing the suitcase from the trunk with the wedding outfit inside. Cassie says there were no signs of forcible entry and she believes the thief may have used a device to spoof the remote and unlock the car. It was parked in the lot of their apartment complex, near the corner of Nobel and Cargill Avenue in North University City.Cassie says she went to the car on Saturday morning to go grocery shopping, and saw the hood popped, trunk opened, glove compartment ajar, and items spread out all over the seats. She says she does not care about other stolen items like a pet transporter and tire chains stolen, but is now on a mission to get the outfit back. "Since it happened, I've been driving around the neighborhood, looking in little pockets and corners, hoping to see abandoned clothes or an abandoned suitcase," she said. Cassie has since posted more than 20 fliers in the area around her complex. She hopes to get the outfit back to keep as a family heirloom, and that if the thief has a change of heart - no questions asked. San Diego Police say there is no suspect identified. They say in addition to the wedding outfit, two pairs of sunglasses were stolen. The police report says the thief accessed an unlocked vehicle. Cassie says this is the second car break in two years her family has had to deal with living at their complex. 2143
