SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 7-year-old child was struck by a car while looking at Christmas lights in Ocean Beach Monday night. According to police, the incident happened around 6:30 on the 4700 block of Newport Avenue. Police say the family was looking at Christmas lights when the child didn’t see a car coming, walked out into the street and was struck by a car. The young boy was taken to the hospital with a broken leg. Police say the driver remained at the scene. Alcohol isn’t believed to be a factor. 511

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A brother and sister who own two Rancho Bernardo nail salons were arraigned Thursday on federal charges they were part of a forced labor conspiracy. Cindy Mydung Luu and Jason Luu lured their second cousin from Vietnam to San Diego in 2014 to work long hours in their salons, Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon, prosecutors said. The woman arrived on a student visa and attended Grossmont College, but applied for a spouse visa after marrying Jason Luu in 2016. Prosecutors said the siblings “engaged in a scheme intended to cause the victim to believe she would suffer financial and reputational harm if she did not continue working.” The siblings own Eden Nails Lounge & Spa and Majestic Nail Salon in Rancho Bernardo.“We are very grateful that this matter came to the attention of the Human Trafficking Task Force upon the suggestion and support of two caring and vigilant nail salon customers who had befriended the victim,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “With their assistance, Task Force officers were able to assist the victim immediately and to investigate these alleged crimes.” The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division also investigated the defendants’ nail salon for minimum wage and overtime violations, according to prosecutors.The Luu’s were arrested at their home in Tierrasanta Thursday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Chula Vista World War II veteran celebrated the 100th birthday of a lifetime, with help from hundreds of strangers.The celebration was made possible through Arthur Brook, a 9-year-old dedicated to preserving the stories of WWII veterans. He's been interviewing veterans living at the Veterans Home of California, Chula Vista"Since they were at least in their 90's, to be registered in the military during WWII, they wouldn't be here for much longer," said Arthur.When Arthur learned Army veteran Edwin Schwimmer was turning 100 in September, he wanted to give him a special gift. "We quickly made a decision to make it the most special birthday in a long time!" the 9-year-old added.Arthur put out a call requesting birthday cards and received hundreds from around the country. "So many people thought to send him cards, I just wanted to thank them all, who sent cards to Edwin Schwimmer to thank him for his service to our country," said Arthur. Schwimmer was stunned at the number of people who took the time to write him a letter. "There's no words I can express how I feel," said Schwimmer, "I'm the luckiest guy in the world, the luckiest guy in the world."Arthur says he'll continue his mission to interview as many WWII veterans as possible. 1277

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A boy found wandering in the parking lot of a Rolando church Monday was reunited with his mother.The pastor of the Fellowship of Love Divine church found the boy around 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot on Aragon Dr., near the Kroc Center.San Diego Police got a call about 30 minutes later from a mother reporting her child missing from a home about a block away."He was clean. Had on a pair of Pampers, and a pair of socks. And he stuffed had a toy car and he seemed to be really happy, you know," said Pastor James Dawson.The boy was returned to his mother at their apartment nearby.
