By 1937, one man remarked in the Lakeside Farmer that the region looked very different from 1898, "with its paved highway and autos standing on both sides ... there was lots of business in the old days."Things to do...Lakeside Rodeo: The first organized rodeo was held in Lakeside in 1920 and remained a big part of the town's history and annual calendar. (KGTV) -- La Mesa businesses that were damaged or looted during protests that turned violent in late May can receive financial assistance through a special fund.According to the East County Economic Development Council, the La Mesa Disaster Recovery Fund “was created by the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help businesses damaged or destroyed in the aftermath of opportunistic violence and looting following peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrations in La Mesa.”The fund raised ,000 on its first day, and then 0,000 by the second day. The fund has now reached nearly 0,000.Fund organizers said they want to be “fast, fair, and equitable” with the distribution of money to the affected businesses.A flat stipend amount will be distributed to each verified business starting the week of June 29. Three-quarters of the money will be distributed during this Phase 1.The remaining 25 percent will be distributed during Phase 2 (no exact date given), with the intention of closing the fund by the end of July.To be eligible to receive funding, businesses are being asked to upload photos of damage and include verification of the address and ownership through an online form. (KGTV) - Tired firefighters, including one featured in a viral photo, returned home to Lakeside Tuesday after almost two weeks of battling the Ferguson Fire in Mariposa County.James Paterson was captured in a photograph shared on Twitter with his head resting on his chest in apparent exhaustion.Paterson’s strike team was on day 10 of its deployment to the Sierra Nevada foothills.  "That was one of those really long shifts," he said.  "It was 5 a.m., and the sun had come up. My engineer had just caught me, having a hard time keeping my eyes open.""I think it’s a glimpse into what we do," said Shawn McKenna, who took the picture "It’s beyond the red trucks, lights, and sirens. It’s the raw emotions."Paterson was part of a three-person team that went to the Ferguson Fire on July 16.  They spent 16 days at the fire. 878

LA MESA, CA (KGTV) — Parents of children in an East County school district were looking forward to their kids returning to campus at the end of this month, but that might not happen.Students in the La Mesa-Spring Valley District are scheduled to return Nov. 30, but if San Diego County's COVID-19 cases push the county back to the most restrictive purple tier, that will not happen.Meg Jacobsen is the executive director of the district's education services. Her seven-year-old daughter is also a student in the district."My daughter loves to go to virtual school, but being on a zoom all day can be hard for students, especially little ones," said Jacobsen.Under the state's health mandate, schools that are already open in some capacity would not be affected by moving back a tier, but schools that are closed would not be able to open."If schools have opened for in-person learning, then they can continue with what they are doing. At some schools, where they may have opened several grade levels, say they opened K-3, and they planned to continue adding grade levels, those schools would be able to continue doing that," said Bob Mueller, program specialist at the San Diego County Office of Education.The mandate applies to individual school sites."In other places, where you might have one school in a school district opened and other schools not, those schools would be frozen," said Mueller.Jacobsen is hoping the county's number of COVID-19 cases goes down."This has been a rocky road the past six months for us. Our teachers have been just absolutely amazing," said Jacobsen.The district initially planned to open in mid-October but pushed back the date partly because of the outbreak of cases at nearby San Diego State."Like so many things in 2020, we've had to, I think the word is, pivot, make plans A, B, C and then when we find something new, we are prepared, but we have to be prepared and adjust the way we go," said Jacobsen.San Diego Unified is still planning to bring more students back on campus in January. Oceanside's school district is bringing back elementary students on Nov. 9, middle, and high school students are scheduled to return in January.Schools impacted by the purple tier would not be able to open until mid-December."Schools that haven't reopened in any capacity would essentially be frozen there for a minimum of five weeks," said Mueller."It's a waiting game at this point," said Jacobsen. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man suspected in a reported domestic disturbance led sheriff’s deputies on brief pursuit and then barricaded himself in a Lakeside home for several hours before finally surrendering.At around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, San Diego County sheriff’s officials said deputies were dispatched to a home in the 11600 block of Hi Ridge Road in Lakeside over a domestic disturbance report.According to officials, a woman had locked herself in a bedroom with her two children and was “hiding from the estranged father of the children who was inside her home.”When deputies arrived at the scene, they saw a man -- later identified as 39-year-old Dustin Banzhof -- drive away from the home, prompting deputies to pursue him. Banzhof eventually made his way back to the house on Hi Ridge Road.Deputies believed Banzhof was armed with a gun and had fired it multiples times, possibly in the direction of deputies. One deputy returned fire, forcing the suspect to head inside the home and he refused to come out.It is unknown how many shots were fired.Banzhof finally came out of the house at around 2:30 a.m. Monday and surrendered to deputies.According to sheriff’s officials, Banzhof was arrested on multiple unspecified charges. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, but no other details were released.No injuries were reported in the incident.Officials said the sheriff’s Homicide Unit is investigating the matter. 1437
