SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man suspected in an attack at a Rolando 7-Eleven that left a father of four on life support pleaded not guilty to one charge of assault with a deadly weapon Friday.The assault charge includes a special allegation for great bodily injury on the victim.John Cowan Patch, 26, is accused of striking 30-year-old George Almestar in the head with a wrench during an argument early Tuesday morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Volunteers spent Wednesday afternoon putting some TLC into the Balboa Park Carousel.Built over 100 years ago, the carousel has broken down only three times. That's in part due to support from the community and the dedication of Carousel Manager Bill Brown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The woman who survived her mother jumping from the Coronado Bridge while holding her got to meet someone who was there that day.Bertha Loaiza was just 3-years-old when her mother leapt from the 246-tall bridge on August 5, 1985.Her mother never came to after hitting the water.“It was the first body I ever saw,” said Fred Maupin who was on his parents’ sailboat near the bridge that day, “at 10-years-old, that sticks with you.”Maupin remembers watching responders pull two bodies out of the water and tried to put the memory in the back of his mind, but says it grew with time.“That’s how it become more tragic and scarring,” said Maupin, “remembering that someone could do that with her baby.”RELATED:?Woman survived her mother's bridge suicide as a toddlerMaupin saw a story about Loaiza on Facebook a few weeks ago and knew he had to meet her in person.Fred hit the road early from Arizona on Friday and the two met for the first time at Gloriettta Bay Park “I feel like I have to apologize,” said Loaiza, “cause he’s gone through it in a different way than I have.”The two hugged then talked for more than an hour — Bertha even got him a gift.“I feel better that he can see that I’m okay,” said Loaiza, “he can remember that instead of the bad stuff.”“Taking a memory that was so haunting and turning the page,” said Maupin, “it’s a better ending to the story than I had in my mind.” 1436

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Huey Lewis and The News fans disappointed by the band’s canceled concerts have a chance to enjoy its hit songs at a musical, Heart of Rock and Roll, set to debut at San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre in September.Lewis, the band’s lead singer and namesake, announced Friday he was dealing with the sudden loss of his hearing."Two and a half months ago, just before a show in Dallas, I lost most my hearing," Lewis said in a message to his fans Friday. "Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can't hear music enough to sing."Lewis went on to explain that doctors believe he has the inner ear disorder Meniere's disease and said he should not perform until he improves."Needless to say, I feel horrible about this, and wish to sincerely apologize to all the fans who've already bought tickets and were planning to come see us," Lewis added. "[I] hope that one day soon I'll be able to perform again."Fans will be able to hear the 80s rocker’s hits in Heart of Rock and Roll, which runs September 6 through October 21. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve.
