HAWAII (KGTV) -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck Hawaii Thursday afternoon.According to the USGS, the quake happened about 1:30 p.m., 11 miles south of Fern Acres on the Big Island.The earthquake was just one of hundreds of earthquakes that have swarmed the island, prompting concerns that Kilauea Volcano could erupt.The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicated that a volcanic eruption was possible but not imminent. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes.The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Pu?u ?ō?ō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano.Since that collapse, about 250 earthquakes were reported in the area into Tuesday evening, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory status report.Check out the map below to see the area near where the earthquake hit: 931

Hillary Clinton tweeted her support on Wednesday of 11-year-old Mariana Taylor, who was reprimanded by her teacher in a Maryland school for kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance. The former secretary of state and 2016 Democratic Party nominee for president said on Wednesday, "It takes courage to exercise your right to protest injustice, especially when you’re 11! Keep up the good work Mariana."Mariana's parents have joined with the ACLU after her teacher allegedly reprimanded the Catonsville, Md. sixth grader. Mariana, a student in the Baltimore County School District, has a rule that stipulates that students and staff must "stand and face the flag and while standing give an approved salute and recite in unison the Pledge of Allegiance."The next line of the rule does stipulate, however, "Any student or staff member who wishes to be excused from the flag salute shall be excused."Jay Jimenez of the Maryland ACLU spoke on the policy at a recent district board meeting, urging the board to clarify the district's policy.  "I decided to kneel because there is a lot of things I really don't agree with in the country happening - racism, sexism and the person in the White House, particularly the wall - it's not ok," Mariana said in May. "I feel like it's important to stand up for what I believe in and I want to inspire other people to do it too."According to the ACLU, Mariana was in tears after leaving the classroom as her teacher pushed to have her make a presentation explaining her actions to the class. After Mariana's parents were called by a school guidance counselor, her parents claimed there was confusion on whether students were allowed to forego the Pledge of Allegiance. "The Supreme Court has been very clear that students do not lose their First Amendment rights when they enter the schoolhouse door," Jimenez said. "The ACLU urges Baltimore County and all Maryland schools to review and update their policies to honor respectful student activism in the future, like silently ‘taking a knee' during the Pledge of Allegiance."The school's principal told the Washington Post that he agreed that the district's policy needed to be clarified.  2219

Heading to the streets with a bullhorn this week to celebrate her birthday, Katherine Nelms Nichson bellowed to her neighborhood to fill out the census.“Be counted in the census," she said at the corner of Lenox Avenue and 135th Street. "Come up off your butt."The deadline is weeks away. Officials around the country are worried the shortened timeline, impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak this year, will mean fewer responses than normal. Senator Brian Benjamin of Harlem said it’s not just on Nichson's birthday, but every day she's a political powerhouse.Julie Menin, the director of NYC Census 2020, said Nichson’s message is especially critical right now because New York City is facing an economic crisis.As of Friday, New York City had a response rate of 59.3 percent compared to the nationwide rate of 65.7 percent.The census is a survey required by the U.S. Constitution. It takes just 10 minutes to fill out and can be done online.Why is it so important? Its results are used to determine how much money municipalities gets from Washington for everything from housing to hospitals, roads, bridges, and schools. GUNNISON, Colo. – Linda Williams finds something beautiful in being disconnected.“We have not hooked up to the internet since we lived here," said Williams. "We’ve been here 30 years or so."She prefers connecting with the keys of her piano in her Gunnison, Colorado, home.The pandemic has forced her to connect with her students through the keys on her computer keyboard.“I love children. I love being around children," Williams said.A school district-issued internet hot-spot lets her teach virtually, but she wants the real thing.“We’re hoping for brick and mortar, as they say, because that’s the best way for learning," Williams said.Williams is a preschool special education teacher in the Gunnison Watershed School District, a rural school corporation with around 2,000 students.Geographically, the district reach is the second largest in Colorado."We are about the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined," said Superintendent Leslie Nichols."The spread-out nature of our staff and our families have really brought internet access to the forefront of one of our biggest challenges," Dr. Nichols said.Dr. Nichols says most of the district is outside broadband and cellphone range. In the most rural parts, satellite internet is the only option.“It’s barely better than dial up," said Dr. Nichols.She says about 200 students have that problem.“It’s not like half my district is unable to access the internet, but those kids matter," Dr. Nichols said.The school year here will start in classrooms, but learning could go virtual.“All of those plans require good access to the internet," said Dr. Nichols.Last year, the district gave out close to 100 hotspots to students and staff dealing with connectivity issues at home. The hotspots run off cellphone service."I don't feel like it's the high school experience everyone else gets," said Gunnison High School Sophomore Nicholas Ferraro.Ferraro used a hot spot last school year when the pandemic forced learning online because his internet at home isn’t strong enough.“I’m not sure what the future is like, like if I'm going to go to school for the whole year next year," he said.Nationwide, a million school-aged children live in areas with limited access to the internet.“This country, in the 20th century, we electrified America and we got phone service to everyone in America. It’s past time that mentality with internet service it needs to happen," said Dr. Nichols.For those preparing to return to school, like teacher Linda Williams, the focus is on the connection in the classroom.“Learning and teaching is all about relationships that’s the foundation of it all.
