SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's biggest fireworks spectacular is set to light up the night sky above San Diego Bay Thursday.The Big Bay Boom will unleash a pyrotechnic extravaganza for July 4th, giving viewers all across the San Diego waterfront a sight to behold.The show kicks off Thursday at 9 p.m. An estimated 300,000 to 500,000 visitors are expected to take in the fireworks display around San Diego.RELATED: San Diego July 4th fireworks mapThe Port of San Diego and convention center are teaming up to offer a free Big Bay Boom community celebration at the center's Bayfront Terraces starting at 5 p.m. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.But don't fret, with that many onlookers there's plenty of room to watch and get down to the bay:ShuttlesFree Harbor Island?Shuttle:For shuttle service to Harbor Island, spectators are asked to park at the airport’s long-term parking lot. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted 6-3 Monday evening to approve a five-year lease extension for the Campland on the Bay campground. The city struck a deal with Campland to expand into De Anza Cove and remove the crumbling mobile home park. Earlier in the day Monday, competing rallies took place outside council chambers. The issue on the agenda Monday – the future of about 75 acres on the northwest portion of Mission Bay. Currently, it’s an RV Park next to a mobile home park crumbling with asbestos and warning signs keeping the public out. The operator of the RV park is terminating its lease later in June. Campland on the Bay has operated for 50 years just to the west. It’s offering to take over the lease for the RV park and add the mobile home park for five years. It would do ,000,000 of improvements, including getting rid of old homes. A group called the ReWild Mission Bay Coalition is fighting back. The coalition wants the city to pursue restoring the area to its natural habitat, fearing that entering into what’s supposed to be a temporary arrangement could end up becoming a long-tern solution. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some San Diegans are pushing back against the county’s order to wear face coverings in public.The face coverings requirement in San Diego County -- prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic -- has been in effect since early May, but in other California counties, rules are starting to change.Last week, Orange County officials decided to roll back their mandate and only “strongly recommended” that masks be worn in public settings.Riverside and San Bernardino counties have also relaxed their respective mask mandates.“It's a hard thing to draw the lines. There’s human nature, there’s a concern about such a ramp-up of state enforcement of things,” said University of St. Thomas Law School Professor Robert Kahn.Kahn, an expert in mask law and history, said one of the biggest issues is people are not used to taking orders from health officials.That feeling is evident in social media postings on pages like Reopen San Diego on Facebook, where there is a growing push to rescind San Diego’s mask mandate.Many health officials still agree that face coverings can block transmission of the respiratory droplets released by people when breathing or talking.During a Monday press briefing, San Diego County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said, “Every jurisdiction is different, but San Diego will continue mandatory face coverings.”Kahn said no matter what rules or laws government might put in place, people will ultimately have to abide by what businesses want their customers to do.“Businesses will make their decision; private business, free enterprise understands this,” he said.Orange County’s public health officer resigned rather than remove the county’s mask order.
