SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Republican California State Senator Brian Jones is behind a new bill that, if passed, would change the way military retirement pay is taxed. The bill, titled SB 1071, would exempt military retirement pay from the state’s income tax. According to Jones, California is one of only seven states that fully taxes military retirement pay. Other states include Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia. RELATED: 50th District candidates debate housing, job growth, taxes"Our state should be encouraging military retirees to make California their home rather than driving them to other states," Jones said."The men and women who served our country earned every dollar of their retirement pay and states should not be trying to tax it. This measure is the right thing to do and will help keep veterans and their families in California."Jones coauthored the bill with Senators Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita), Bob Archuleta (D-Pico Rivera) and Pat Bates (R-Laguna Niguel). The bill comes as Jones makes a bid for the 50th Congressional District. 1092

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres are returning to the playoffs for the first time in 14 years after beating the Seattle Mariners 7-4 with a three-run rally in the 11th inning that included a go-ahead double by newcomer Mitch Moreland. The clincher came in the finale of a series that was moved from Seattle because of poor air quality due to wildfires, so the Mariners were considered the home team and batted last. After closer Trevor Rosenthal, another newcomer, struck out Phillip Ervin for the final out, the Padres had a brief but joyous celebration in the infield. 583

SAN DEIGO (KGTV) - A family in City Heights is going to save about 90% on their electric bill thanks to the non-profit GRID Alternatives. The organization installed free solar on their roof for Mother's Day. Erika Rodriguez is a single mother of three and she told 10News she would not have been able to afford solar without the program. She'll own the panels as long as she lives at the house. If she moves, the panel stays. The construction team doing the work is a team of all women volunteers. GRID Alternatives is also hoping to get more women into solar-related jobs. Currently, women only make up 27% of solar jobs. 661
