(KGTV) - A dog owner has a warning for other pet owners after her 5-year-old English Bulldog died during a dental cleaning at a Vista pet hospital."I just thought it was a routine visit," said Kristine Ortiz.Ortiz's nightmare began two Tuesdays ago at Banfield Pet Hospital in Vista, after she brought Chesty in for a dental cleaning. Chesty is her emotional support dog. Ortiz, a medically retired Marine, lives with a rare and debilitating bone disease. Ortiz got the call just before 3 in the afternoon."Just in shock. Kept thinking this is not my dog. Has to be a different dog," said a tearful Ortiz. RELATED: Dog dies after suffering burns during surgeryIt wasn't. She was told Chesty was dead."I was upset. I remember screaming ... I've had surgery six times since I got my dog, and she's been with me the whole time, so it was very emotional," said Ortiz. Ortiz demanded an explanation."They told us he had an adverse reaction to the medicine and everything they were administering," said Ortiz.That didn't make sense to Ortiz. Chesty, a healthy dog, had been put under during two previous cleanings and never had any issues. She hired her own expert to conduct a necropsy and received a report, which concluded it was not an adverse reaction that killed Chesty, but a slow suffocation.RELATED: Beloved family dog attacked and killed at Santee dog park"The report says over a period of six hours, slowly his throat was closing," said Ortiz.Chesty's death is not the only one when it comes to Banfield and dental cleanings. An internet search shows complaints of deadly dental cases across the country. (KGTV) – Infamous horse jockey Patrick Valenzuela pleaded guilty in court to domestic abuse, admitting to hitting his girlfriend at Fidel’s Restaurant in Carlsbad in September.He’s one of the most decorated thoroughbred horse jockeys with more than 4,300 wins. In 1989 Valenzuela won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, a seven-time winner of the Breeders' Cup races.But he’s been sidelined on the track for personal and drug abuse problems and fined 28 times in his career.His California license was permanently revoked at one point. Prosecutors say he smacked his girlfriend in a jealous rage for hugging a bartender.In a surprise move, his girlfriend addressed the judge, asking him not to issue a protective order that would keep Valenzuela away from his girlfriend. Prosecutors say he grabbed his girlfriend’s cellphone and hit her face causing her ear to go numb.They also say he chased her to her car and beat on her windows and that she was afraid to let him in the vehicle. WASHINGTON (AP) — Government scientists have classified 18 U.S. volcanoes as "very high threat" because of what's been happening inside them and how close they are to people.The U.S. Geological Survey has updated its volcano threat assessments for the first time since 2005. The danger list is topped by Hawaii's Kilauea , which has been erupting this year. The others in the top five are Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier in Washington, Alaska's Redoubt Volcano and California's Mount Shasta ."This report may come as a surprise to many, but not to volcanologists," said Concord University volcano expert Janine Krippner. "The USA is one of the most active countries in the world when it comes to volcanic activity," she said, noting there have been 120 eruptions in U.S. volcanoes since 1980.RELATED: Hawaii's Kilauea could send 10-ton boulders half-mile into the airEleven of the 18 very high threat volcanoes are in Oregon, Washington and California.Government scientists use various factors to compute an overall threat score for each of the 161 young active volcanoes in the nation. (KGTV) -- California could become the first state in the nation to use recycled plastic as part of its roads and freeways.The state Senate unanimously passed SB 1238, which directs Caltrans to study the use of plastics in asphalt for construction, or repair of a state highway or road."There's no other state in the nation that has more paved roads in California," said Sen. Ben Hueso, who wrote the bill. "So, imagine if California developed the use for a product that it's abundant in … This would be a game changer. This would be a great way to reuse plastic.”That's especially important now, as China has stopped buying recycled materials from the U.S. Prior to 2018, California sent 2/3 of its recyclable materials to China, which has since banned all plastic trash imports.Now, instead of going into the landfill, it could go into California’s roads."It would help create jobs in our state. It would help a local contractor that we have in our county, it would help improve the sturdiness of our roads and reduce the maintenance of our roads," said Hueso.Hueso said he got the idea from a group of students at Bonita Vista High School in Chula Vista. He met with their Progressive Club and Green Club, challenging them to find solutions.The students introduced Hueso to MacReber Southern California, a Vista company that takes plastic and prepares it to be used in asphalt."It makes too much sense not to do," said MacReber CEO Rebeca Sparks. "With this technology, we can truly offset our footprint, and not only offset it but be do more than that to be plastic positive."MacReber takes plastic out of the recycling and landfill chain, and then processes it. The company then sells the plastic to asphalt companies. They use the plastic mix instead of oil when making asphalt.MacReber said in addition to being more environmentally friendly, it also creates a stronger, sturdier road."It's going to look feel and move the same as a traditional asphalt," said MacReber President Chris Sparks. "But our product lends to a stronger, longer lasting asphalt road."Hueso said finding a use like this for all of the plastic waste produced in California is vital to the environment, especially now that China has stopped buying the state's plastic waste.The bill still has to get approval from the state Assembly, and then it would need the governor’s signature to become law.After that, Caltrans would be responsible for studying and implementing the idea. 2478
