SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego restaurants are taking extra precautions, and going out of their way to care for the most vulnerable neighbors during the stay at home order.Victor Lopez, owner of El Pollo Grill, said he's delivering free meals to seniors in need. "Today we're actually going to send 10 more right now," Lopez said. They've served about 90 customers in three days. When it comes to the bill, he's paying about 70 percent and donations are covering the rest.LISTINGS: Who is open for business in San Diego during stay-at-home order"We have the food, we have the resources, we have a little money left over so we're willing to take the hit," Lopez said. The hit right now is 30 percent, but Lopez said the 37 year old business is focused on community. Across town, D.Z. Akin's is also worried about their customers, "we try between every customer to sanitize ourselves, sanitize the pens, sanitize the counters." Son of the founders, Elan Akin, said he often sees an older crowd.Customers, like Philip McCabe, say they normally see more people. The lunch rush Wednesday mean about 7 people standing in the deli with lots of space in between. The dining room was closed with a sign on the chair.RELATED: San Diego hospitals start drives for personal protective equipmentMcCabe said he's been coming to the authentic Jewish deli for 25 years and always stops by when he's in the neighborhood. The delicatessen celebrates 40 years in business this year. It was founded by a couple who fell in love at an LA butcher shop. They've expanded their College Area business five times and enjoyed some famous diners, from Tony Gwynn, to Alex Trebek. Each celebrity has a picture on the wall.RELATED: Small business stimulus loans could be forgivableAkin is focused each day on keeping the doors open and the orders ready.Lopez feels like he's in a catch-22, if he keeps the doors open, he's exposing his employees to people potentially carrying the virus, but if he closes, he's letting the community down.Lopez said he's commissioned a plastic barrier to be installed Sunday to run from the ceiling to a few inches above the counter-top, to protect his employees and customers.RELATED: San Diego hospitals start drives for personal protective equipmentLopez is also collecting donations to sponsor 60 ICU nurses in San Diego hospitals, providing them with food every day. If you would like to help, contact him through the restaurant's Facebook Page. Both Lopez and Akin are running businesses their parents created out of love, hoping they can continue bringing joy and tasty food to their neighbors."What's been nicest to see is how everyone is being positive. They're looking at the opportunity to spend time with their families, to get things done around the house," Akin said smiling. Both restaurants hope to weather the storm. 2838

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego-based Helix has new FDA Emergency approval for its COVID-19 test that will make getting a test easier. The test is now approved for self-administration and for asymptomatic people to take. That means testing sites can give more tests without having to increase their staffing levels."It simplifies the collection," says Dr. James Lu, the President of Helix. "You can do it without having to have another person watching you."The test is also much simpler than the traditional upper nasal swab, as it only requires the lower area of the nostril to be swabbed."It actually just goes into the anterior narrows of the nostril area, and you just rotate it five times in each nostril," says Dr. Lu."It can be totally done by yourself, is completely painless, and it takes less than 30 seconds."RELATED: University City lab switches gears to create COVID-19 testsHowever, unlike home-pregnancy tests or DNA swab kits, Dr. Lu says Helix's COVID test still needs to be done in a clinical setting, so medical professionals can report the results and advise patients after they get results."We still think it's essential to have a physician in the loop, particularly for those cases where you do have positives," says Dr. Lu. "Those patients do need to be reported, and also make sure they have the right guidance in terms of quarantine."The simpler, self-administered swab could also make people more likely to get tested since they don't have to go through the old way of testing, which involved a swab shoved all the way up their nasal cavity.More testing also means more people will know if they're sick even if they don't have symptoms. That will make it easier for businesses and schools to reopen in the future."We believe that accurate and easily available, fast turnaround testing is essential to controlling the disease," says Dr. Lu. "And it's essential for identifying individuals who are sick or potentially spreaders so they can quarantine."Helix plans to make 100,000 of the newly approved tests every day. Around 5,000 of them will go to San Diego testing sites. The rest will be sent across the country. 2144

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University is launching two task forces after a 19-year-old died earlier this month after attending a fraternity event.Dylan Hernandez died Nov. 8 after falling out of the top bunk in his dorm.In the wake of the tragedy, SDSU suspended all 14 of its fraternities. On Wednesday, it announced the creation of two task forces to address student life and attack issues that may have led to Hernandez's death. RELATED: Cause determined after San Diego State University student diesOne task force will study student activities and safety, while the other will investigate alcohol and substance misuse. About half of the 28 members are university employees and administrators, while about five are current students. Erik Johannesen, a chapter advisor for the Delta Sigma Phi, will participate in the task force on activities and safety. "Fraternities, when they're operating well, they're the great finishing school for every young man that joins one," said Johannesen, who graduated SDSU in 1981. "When we are off our game we are absolutely deplorable in terms of what our behavior can be."RELATED: San Diego State suspends 14 fraternities after student is hospitalizedThe makeup of the boards are already under scrutiny due to the lack of current students. "They're the ones that will tell you how they drink, and where the risk is, and they're the ones that have to buy in," said education attorney Bob Ottilie. "When you get rules from the top down, they're not followed."A spokeswoman for SDSU said additional task force members will likely be added in the coming weeks. The two groups will start meeting this fall and will produce their own reports that could potentially turn into action. 1732
