They are the people whose plight brought comedian and activist Jon Stewart to tears during an impassioned appearance before Congress this week over funds for other ailing first responders to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. They bear lasting scars from their long hours of work in the pile of destruction that remained after the World Trade Center collapsed nearly 18 years ago. They breathed in noxious air clouded with debris from the fallen buildings after officials assured them it was safe. They have now discovered -- long after the shattered heart of Lower Manhattan was brought back to life -- debilitating illnesses and cancers festering in their bodies. As of May, more than 12,500 cases of cancer had been diagnosed. The most-diagnosed ailments, however, are upper and lower respiratory and gastrointestinal problems, musculoskeletal disorders and mental health conditions. Here are two of their stories: He lost part of left foot to gangrene after ground zero accidentJohn Feal and his crew of demolition experts arrived at ground zero the morning after the towers collapsed."What everybody saw we can deal with ... but the smell is everlasting," he recalled this week. "If I close my eyes and think about it, I smell it."It still keeps him up at night."It smelled like the devil," he said. "The carnage devastation and destruction. If I had a picture of that smell, it would be a picture of the devil."With machines, tools and their hands, the small army of civilians ferreted through tons of twisted steel, rubble and debris. On the fifth day, with 30 minutes left on his 12-hour shift, an 8,000-pound slab of steel broke loose from the pile and crushed his left foot.Feal, 52, spent 11 weeks in the hospital. Doctors amputated his left foot after gangrene set in. He had nearly 40 surgeries and countless hours of therapy. He also was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder."I went there thinking that I could make a difference and I got hurt," he said. "My difference making came later."He founded the 2025

The Senate passed Thursday a massive budget deal that would stave off the looming threat of a potential default on US debt and prevent automatic spending cuts to domestic and military funding. The a final vote was 67-28 and the bill will now go to President Donald Trump for his signature. The vote followed days of grumbling from GOP senators about the cost of the package and uncertainty surrounding who will support it.The agreement, negotiated between congressional leaders and the Trump administration, represents a significant bipartisan compromise but the vote in the GOP-led Senate has proven slightly tougher than some expected among Republicans. In floor remarks ahead of the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called the proposal "a strong deal.""In recent weeks, key officials on President Trump's team engaged in extensive negotiations with Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic House," the Kentucky Republican said. "Given the exigencies of divided government, we knew that any bipartisan agreement on funding levels would not appear perfect to either side. But the administration negotiated a strong deal."On Wednesday, McConnell wouldn't directly answer if more than half his caucus would vote for the bill, only replying to CNN: 1260

The state of Minnesota on Tuesday launched a civil rights investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department in hopes of forcing widespread changes following the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white officer pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for minutes, even after he stopped moving.Gov. Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Human Rights announced the filing of the formal complaint at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. The governor and Human Rights Commissioner Rebecca Lucero said they hope to reach agreement with the city to identify short-term ways to address the police department’s history of racial discrimination, and use the investigation to find long-term solutions for systemic change.Lucero said their goal is to negotiate a consent decree with the city that courts could enforce with injunctions and financial penalties. There are precedents, she said, including a 920

The owner of Schick razors needs to close the gap with Gillette, its biggest rival. So it's turning to new blood to make that happen.Edgewell Personal Care is buying the upstart razor maker Harry's, the two companies announced Thursday. The deal values Harry's at nearly .4 billion.Harry's started in 2013 and quickly expanded by selling low-priced razors online. Edgewell, meanwhile, owns some of the most established brands in the field — including Schick, which started in 1921. Edgewell also owns Wilkinson Sword, a major European brand that has been making razors since 1898.But Edgewell trails its main rival, Gillette, by a large margin. Gillette is a unit of Procter & Gamble, and accounted for about 10% of that company's .8 billion in revenue — about billion — last year. By comparison, Edgewell reported .2 billion in revenue during its most recent fiscal year.Sales for the first six months of this year fell 7% compared to a year earlier, Edgewell reported Thursday. But CEO Rod Little told investors that the company expects revenue to rise to .7 billion in its first full fiscal year after it acquires Harry's. The deal is expected to close early next year.Little said Edgewell was drawn to Harry's success with building a brand and marketing directly to consumers."We've been talking about it for a while," he said on an earnings call. "And when you look at what Harry's has done, we've looked at that from afar for a long time," he told investors."The deal also could help Harry's cut costs. Despite its success, Little said the business is only approaching the breakeven point this year.Investors didn't immediately embrace the purchase. Shares of Edgewell fell nearly 13% in midday trading Thursday.Harry's founders Andy Katz-Mayfield and Jeff Raider will stay on to run the combined companies' US business. Raider was also one of the founders of the eyeglass maker Warby Parker. The two of them had been friends since college.Harry's is not the first razor startup to be acquired by a more established company. In 2016, Unilever bought 2083
