HONG KONG, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech at a welcoming banquet hosted by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government here Monday evening, elaborating his understanding of and expectations to the HKSAR.     Xi started his toast at the dinner by extending warm greetings and best wishes to Hong Kong people on behalf of the central government and President Hu Jintao. "Over the past 11 years since Hong Kong's return, what you have achieved is truly commendable," Xi told about 400 guests attending the dinner in his televised speech at the Shangri-La Hotel, "we are here to feel for ourselves the profound changes that have taken place in Hong Kong since its return."     Xi expressed his thanks to the HKSAR government and Hong Kong compatriots for their strong support to the Chinese mainland in the rescue and relief efforts in earthquake-hit southwest China, as well as their contributions to the preparations of the Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games.     "We in the Chinese mainland are deeply touched by the profound friendship of our Hong Kong compatriots with whom we share the strongest blood ties," said Xi, who takes charge of the Hong Kong and Macao affairs and a top-level leading group for the preparations of the Beijing Olympics and Paralymics.     The vice president said he was confident that the HKSAR government and Hong Kong compatriots will host warm, splendid and successful equestrian events during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.     As one of the six co-host cities, Hong Kong will stage the Beijing Olympics equestrian events in August.     Xi said the HKSAR government has led the preparatory work with great sense of commitment and the Equestrian Committee (Hong Kong)and the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong have been working in close collaboration with all sectors of Hong Kong.     The whole country and the whole world are deeply impressed by Hong Kong people's enthusiasm, their level of participation and their passion for the Olympics, he noted.     Xi announced that the Ministry of Commerce and the HKSAR government will soon sign a document on the arrangement to facilitate entry of Hong Kong service providers to the Chinese mainland, particularly Guangdong Province.     "In future, the central government will continue to give strong support to all initiatives and endeavors aimed at developing the economy and improving people's lives in Hong Kong," Xi stressed.     With the strong support of the motherland and the united efforts of the HKSAR government and Hong Kong people of all sectors, Hong Kong will overcome all risks, difficulties and challenges on its way of development, he added.     Xi said Hong Kong now enjoys social stability, economic growth and higher living standard, and its future is even more promising.     "What has happened has proved and will continue to show that the policy of 'one country, two systems" is the right choice for Hong Kong and has strong vitality," he said, adding, "our Hong Kong compatriots will administer Hong Kong well and bring greater prosperity to the people."     In the welcoming banquet in honor of the vice president, Chief Executive of HKSAR Donald Tsang pledged that Hong Kong will do its best to make the equestrian events a great success to demonstrate that Hong Kong people are worthy of the trust bestowed upon them by the nation.     Xi arrived in Hong Kong on Sunday morning for a three-day inspection tour of the special administrative region.

KUNMING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- China Eastern Airlines (CEA) will offer compensation of up to 400 yuan (57 U.S. dollars) to passengers affected in flights where pilots deliberately turned their aircraft around.     Passengers whose flights were canceled will get 400 yuan compensation. Those delayed within two hours of departure and without accommodation would get 100 yuan. Those delayed within eight hours of departure would get 200 yuan, said an official with the Yunnan branch of the carrier on Tuesday.     The compensation was set according to a guideline notice released by the general Administration of Civil Aviation, the official said.     From March 31 to April 1, 21 flights returned to their departure points in Yunnan Province, in southwestern China, leaving more than 1,000 passengers stranded at Kunming Airport, the capital of Yunnan.     "The time and energy we have wasted could never be compensated by 400 yuan," said Yu Xiaoyan, a tourist from the northern Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.     Yu planned to take the MU5793 flight at 9:50 a.m. on March 31 from Kunming to Xishuangbanna. The plane never came after waiting for seven hours at the airport.     She was offered a ticket change at 4 p.m. on April 1 and received 400 yuan compensation.     CEA finally admitted on Monday that some pilots on the 21 flights deliberately turned their aircraft around while in flight.     It originally said the incidents were due to poor weather. However flights with other airlines flying the same routes landed on schedule during the same period.     The airline has suspended the pilots. Further probing is underway, said an announcement on the company's website.

BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- A dozen people were killed and millions were affected as rainstorms continued to lash south China over the past two days, local authorities said on Friday.     Torrential rains also destroyed more than 10,000 houses, disrupted traffic and caused landslides in the provinces of Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei and Anhui, Guangdong, as well as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     Precipitation exceeded 300 mm in several counties and 250 mm in more than 20 during the last two days in Guangxi and Hunan.     Five people were killed in landslides and house collapses in Guangxi. More than 1.58 million were affected as of Friday morning. Asahi Breweries Ltd., Japan's largest beer producer, is targeting the Chinese milk products market with an all-around manner with its new milk factory being under construction in China's Shandong Province, company officials told Xinhua Saturday.     A milk company, which has been building the factory, was established in Laiyang city, Shandong Province, in April. It's the first time for a large-scale Japanese corporation to enter the Chinese integrated milk business in the fields of both production and sales.     The company is owned 90 percent by Asahi. Business of the new company will involve the entire process from raising cows to marketing, while products will be sold to major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Qingdao under Asahi's proprietary label, according to Asahi Breweries officials.     Price of the Asahi milk products will be about 50 percent to 100 percent higher than average local milk, and sales in the first year will be targeted at 1 ton per day, they said.
