This election season, Demetrius Short is hustling to get his people to the polls.“We have the wonderful opportunity as African American men to be here today,” Short said to a group of young African American voters outside a polling site in Nashville, Tennessee. “The next John Lewis might be right here.”Short is the founder and CEO of the Transformation Life Center and Steps of Success 5K, nonprofits mentoring youth living in underserved communities. Now, Short and his team are using physical fitness to inspire political change by leading young Black men on runs and talking about becoming better people afterwards.“Going out, taking your niece and nephew that may not have a father, being that father or mother example to them and just be the change you want to see,” Short said.During this presidential election, Short is reaching out to college students from Fisk University, a private historically Black college in Nashville.“We’re here to come out here and inspire change in our community and inspire young people to really vote,” said Myles Harris, a recent Fisk University graduate.Harris says he is motivated to get more members of African American communities to have their voices heard and their votes counted.“A lot of people don’t vote because they don’t see the point, they don’t understand why it’s so important,” he said. Many members in the local African American community do understand the importance of this election and are calling this political movement inspiring.“Us Black folks are still fighting. It’s time for a change, man,” said Norman T. Wilson. “So, it’s good that they are trying to get them to vote. votes matter, whoever they vote for.”According to the Pew Research Center, the Black voter turnout rate declined in 2016, falling to 59.6% after reaching a record-high 66.6% in 2012.That’s a trend Short wants to change, not by swaying young people’s votes, but through politics, one step and one vote at a time“We don’t have to riot. We don’t have to do it the bad way,” he said. “We can go to the polls and we can do it the democratic way. The way that our country, I believe our country was set up to do." 2151

Top military officials, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, warned President Donald Trump during an afternoon meeting Thursday that he risks escalating US involvement in Syria if he goes forward with the type of aggressive bombing campaign he has pressed for over the past week, according to US and western officials briefed on the conversation.Trump has pushed military leaders to develop plans for a sustained assault on Syrian regime targets in response to last weekend's chemical attack, the officials said. But Mattis and other members of the President's national security team cautioned Trump during the meeting that such a strategy could pull the US into direct conflict with Russia and Iran. The resistance has upset Trump, who wanted to take quick action and feels like the options being presented to him don't go far enough, according to the officials. 875

Ticketmaster has issued a response regarding Billboard's report that concertgoers would have to verify that they've been vaccinated or tested negative for the virus before attending a live show.In an email to E.W. Scripps, Ticketmaster said there is no requirement coming from them about mandating vaccines or testing for future events. In the original report, Billboard reported that the ticket-selling company would set up a way for the customers' COVID test results to be sent to third-party health companies. And through its digital app, Ticketmaster would tie those test results or vaccination status to a ticket digitally that'd be used to enter events.Ticketmaster explained that it is up to the event organizers to set policies around safety and entry requirements."Ticketmaster does not have the power to set policies around safety/entry requirements, which would include vaccines and/or testing protocols, a spokesperson for Ticketmaster said. "That would be up to the discretion of the event organizer, based on their preferences and local health guidelines."The spokesperson explained that they are exploring the ability to enhance their existing digital ticket capabilities amid the pandemic."One path Ticketmaster is actively exploring and working to develop is a framework for syncing with third-party healthcare providers to link COVID vaccine status and/or test results to fans' digital tickets for event entry," the spokesperson said. "All aspects of vaccine verification/testing for the broad public would be set by regional health officials. Any health information would be stored with third-party health care providers with HIPPA compliance, not with Ticketmaster."In a statement, Ticketmaster President Mark Yovich added that the company's goal is to "provide enough flexibility and options that venues and fans have multiple paths to return to events.""We imagine there will be many third-party health care providers handling vetting - whether that is getting a vaccine, taking a test, or other methods of review and approval - which could then be linked via a digital ticket so everyone entering the event is verified," Yovich said. "We are working to create integrations to our API and leading digital ticketing technology as we will look to tap into the top solutions based on what's green-lit by officials and desired by clients."Ticketmaster added that this is still in development. Once the technology and regulations are approved, the company said they would make it available, but there is no timeline for implementing this potential idea."In short, we are not forcing anyone to do anything," the spokesperson said. "Just exploring the ability to enhance our existing digital ticket capabilities to offer solutions for event organizers. Just a tool in the box for those that may want to use."The spokesperson stated that Ticketmaster has set up its SmartEvent Suite, which would help event organizers safely welcome concertgoers back to live events. 2987

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KGTV) -- After gunning down a group of workers standing at the door at Borderline Bar & Grill country music bar, Ian David Long paused a moment to post a chilling message on social media before resuming his killing spree."It's too bad I won't get to see all the illogical and pathetic reasons people will put in my mouth as to why I did it. Fact is I had no reason to do it, and I just thought... f***it, life is boring so why not?," Long posted.According to ABC News, citing law enforcement sources and documents, Long published his message then proceeded to shoot victims on the dance floor.  Three minutes later, the former United States Marine Corps machine gunner appeared to taunt the public in a follow-up post."I hope people call me insane (two smiley face emoji)...wouldn't that just be a big ball of irony? Yeah... I'm insane, but the only thing you people do after these shootings is 'hopes and prayers'... or 'keep you in my thoughts'... every time... and wonder why these keep happening... (two more smiley face emoji)," Long posted at 11:27 p.m Wednesday. It's unclear which social media platforms he used.Officials found a Glock .45-caliber handgun at the scene that was purchased legally. The weapon usually holds 10 rounds, plus one in the chamber, but the gunman used an extended magazine in this shooting, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.Officials have not commented on whether mental illness was a factor in the massacre of the 12 people nor determined the shooter's motive. In April, officers responded to a disturbance at Long's home, and he was somewhat irate and acting irrationally, Dean said. A mental health specialist met with him and ultimately decided not to detain him under laws pertaining to his mental health.Dean said that a crisis team that visited Long felt the military veteran might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.Investigators are looking into whether the gunman believed his former girlfriend would be at the bar, ABC News reported.THOUSAND OAKS MASS SHOOTING: 2084
