SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Health officials in San Diego are warning people to avoid water contact at all coastal beaches and bays amid rain sweeping through Southern California. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health issued the general rain advisory Thursday afternoon. According to the department, the urban runoff caused by the rain can cause bacteria levels to spike significantly in ocean and bay water, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers and lagoon outlets. RELATED: Check today's forecastThe runoff could contain bacteria from animal waste, soil and decomposing vegetation. The department says water contact such as swimming, surfing and diving should be avoided during rain and for 72 hours after the rain stops. A beach closure will also remain in place for the shoreline of Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge and Border Field State Park due to sewage-contaminated flows from the Tijuana River. The water contact closure includes all beaches from the south end of Seacoast Drive to the international border. 1058

SAN DIEGO, California — One person died and two others were injured, and Coast Guard crews rescued 17 others after a mega yacht collided with a fishing vessel off the coast of Imperial Beach on Friday night. The 332-foot yacht, Attessa IV, crashed into the 65-foot sportfisher vessel, Prowler, just before 8 p.m. about nine miles off the shore of Imperial Beach, according to the Coast Guard.The collision caused extensive damage to the right side of the Prowler.One man was airlifted to UCSD Hillcrest and died at the hospital, the Coast Guard confirmed. Two others were injured in the accident.Coast Guard crews transferred 17 passengers from the damaged fishing boat back to San Diego. The Prowler's 10 remaining passengers were transferred onto the Attessa IV, set to return to San Diego.The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident. 884

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— Two Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School alumni were in San Diego for a book tour Sunday evening. Sofie Whitney and Brendan Duff shared details of the most horrific moments of their lives — the 2018 Parkland School Shooting. They were two of several authors who wrote the New York Times Best Seller, "Glimmer of Hope."The event was part of a special talk series called "Community Divided: Humanity United," hosted by the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center. "We may have different faiths or cultures. We may have different political perspectives. At the heart of it all of it we are human," CEO of the Lauren Family Jewish Community Center, Betzy Lynch said. "Valuing that human life and value in that, and other human beings is more important than any difference amongst any of us."Valentines Day 2018 was supposed to be a celebration of love. But for Sofie Whitney, it was anything but love."Awful. Like it was my worst nightmare... it was everyone's worst nightmare," Whitney said. At the time, Whitney was a senior at Stonemason Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. She was in drama class when a gunman committed the worst school shooting in the history of the country. Seventeen students and staff lost their lives. "It was unfair that so many people had experienced such a loss, and so many people experienced such trauma, and that it wasn't abnormal," Whitney said. It was not abnormal then. And not abnormal now. Mass shootings, unfortunately, are still a part of the American story. "We just need to collectively remind ourselves that this is a uniquely American problem, so we need to address this as Americans. Not as one side of the political spectrum or the other," Brendan Duff said. Duff had graduated from Stonemason Douglas High School the year prior. He heard about the tragedy from his younger brother, who survived the shooting. The Communication student at Elon University immediately flew home, and became the spokesperson for what later became the "March for Our Lives.""It's our crazy, messed up minds somehow led to this incredible movement forming from just a bunch of kids," Whitney said. Months following the tragedy, survivors did countless interviews. They started the "March for Our Lives" -- the campaign to fight against gun violence. They spoke to every publication, every station, and anyone who would listen. They did not stop until the media attention suddenly faded. The next stage was their book, "Glimmer of Hope.""With the book, we had a lot more time to streamline our process, and figure out what we wanted to include and how we wanted to tell our story," Duff said. He and Whitney collaborated on the chapter titled "Becoming a Team." In it, they wrote stories about survivors and victims. Duff wore several bracelets on his arms, each of them honoring the fallen. ?"We take little parts of these people with us," Duff said. "It doesn't just stop when the tragedy is over. It doesn't just stop when the trigger is pulled. This is something that we take with us, and so we take them with us physically too."Audience members were moved by the young adults' presentations. 72-year-old Lynne Jett from Vista went home with a signed copy of the New York Times Best Seller. "We can't let this happen anymore. We can't let our children sacrifice. That's why I am here," Jett said in tears. "If they are willing to stand, I am certainly willing to listen. (KGTV) - Sharp Rees-Steely dermatologist Nancy Maly said they have seen an increase in people coming in with skin problems related to wearing masks.“Masks are very important but they do come with some drawbacks,” she said.She said the type of mask can impact how much it irritates the skin. A more loose mask will not irritate as badly but is not as effective for the fight against coronavirus, so she said to only wear a loose mask if there are no people nearby.“Obvious trade-off being they don’t function as well as masks so making sure that you’re choosing a face covering that’s appropriate for the situation,” she said.Maly also said wearing daily products like sunscreen, lotion and makeup on your face can make any acne or irritations worse. She said typical medications to treat acne should help these conditions, like salicylic acid and topical retinoids.She said bottom line, though, is that while keeping your skin healthy is important, the masks are necessary to keep others healthy.“I think overall people have been very aware of the overall goal of wearing a mask to protect themselves and protect other people. I think it’s important not to lose sight of that. Obviously getting seriously ill would be much worse than getting acne on your face,” she said. 1297

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Patients were reunited with the men and women who care for them on Saturday at The Heart Institute at Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. The event marked the 34th annual Heart Party. Hundreds of young heart patients and their families showed up for games, gifts and fun. Upstairs, doctors and nurses were caring for a couple newborns who had received heart transplants. For one baby to receive a heart, another has to give it. At just four months old, Zoey has taken part in the Lifesharing program.  553
