Amid the coronavirus pandemic, almost nothing feels normal. Simply walking out your home comes with new rules to follow. Now, filing taxes this year is causing some confusion. “Normally, busy season is a challenge in and of itself, but this has added many more layers,” said Elieen Sherr, with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.Sherr has had an increase number of people confused on whether they are supposed to file their income taxes now, or if the federal income tax deadline extension applies to them.“This all happened in the last few weeks, and the states, they were waiting for the IRS to come out with their guidance,” said Sherr. “At first, it was just payment relief. Then, it was filing and payment relief, so that was confusing.”Sherr explained, just shy of the normal tax deadline, there is now some clearer guidance. The federal government has extended it deadline for federal tax filing and payments to July 15, 2020. Many states have now moved their filing deadlines to match. However, in a few states like Mississippi, Virginia, and Idaho, you have to file earlier. The deadline is May 15 in Mississippi, June 1 for Virginia, and June 15 in Idaho.Differing state and federal deadlines have some wondering if you file your state return early can you file your federal at the later deadline?“Generally, you have to start with the federal, so you will have to start with the federal to get to a state return,” said Sherr. Some good news in that instance: if you owe money on your federal return, you won’t have to pay that until July 15. If you are someone who is getting money back, even better news, returns are being processed right now, without delays.“They want to get the money out to everybody, especially the refund,” Sherr explained. “They want to get it into the economy so they are doing the best they can.” 1862

A Wisconsin school district says it will not allow a high school cheerleading team to honor their slain teammate at an upcoming football game.15-year-old Kaylie Juga was shot and killed in her own home in May. Kaylie's mother was also shot and is still recovering from her injuries. Prosecutors claim Kaylie's ex-boyfriend, 16-year-old Martice Fuller, pulled the trigger.Kaylie's teammates on the Bradford High School cheer team planned to honor her at halftime of a high school football team. They also planned to wear blue T-shirts — Kaylie's favorite color — during the event. But the students were told by the Kenosha Unified School District that the remembrance would not be allowed."They can't hold up a picture of a girl that was murdered that went to that school and was a cheerleader. That is sickening to me," Jenna Tranberg, a friend of Kaylie's, said.Tranberg made the comments at a school board meeting for the district's budget. Board Members could not respond because of open meetings laws and advice from legal counsel.Earlier Tuesday, the district released a statement saying anyone not associated with the school was free to honor Kaylie, but the cheerleaders and others would not be allowed."The District will not sanction any memorials or acknowledgments because it would be legally required to do so for all students involved in order to protect the District against possible legal claims," the statement read. "Instead, the District will remain neutral. While the District fully supports students and staff in moments of crisis, it cannot allow memorializing or acknowledging one student without allowing it for both."Friends attending the meeting were disappointed in the district's decision."She touched so many people's lives and this was finally going to be a thing where we all come together and remember her, and they took it away," Makayla Falcone, a friend of Kaylie's, said. 1916

A night of excess at a Pittsburgh apartment ended with three people dead, four people hospitalized and a police department warning how quickly drugs can kill.Authorities responded to a report of an unconscious man in an apartment complex elevator around 2 a.m. Sunday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Pittsburgh Director of Public Safety Wendell Hissrich said.Shortly later, paramedics responded to another man a few blocks away, outside, who was "somewhat conscious" and had symptoms similar to those of the first man. He was taken to a nearby hospital, Hissrich said.Police traced both men back to an apartment on the city's south side. There, they found five other people who also apparently overdosed.Hissrich said he believed the victims were men between about 30 and 50 years old."The victims -- including three people who died and four who remain hospitalized -- appear to have been at the same venue together, and then to have gone to a second location at a private residence where they apparently overdosed on drugs," 1049
