PARIS, April 27 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he wants to enhance Franco-Sino relations at all levels because China has an indispensable role to play on the global stage.The French president was speaking in an interview with Xinhua Tuesday before his visit to China, where he will attend the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai.President Sarkozy described bilateral ties and partnership as comprehensive as well as strategic."Comprehensive, because it covers all aspects of our relationship; strategic, because China has become an absolutely essential player on the international stage. There is no more big issue today that we can tackle without China," Sarkozy said.Referring to the establishment of the France-China diplomatic relations 45 years ago, the president said some misunderstanding between the two countries had belonged to the past and he held a firm confidence in China's future."This is why I made the strengthening of the Franco-Chinese partnership a priority of our foreign policy," Sarkozy said.He said relations between the two countries had warmed and France would like to further ties with China "in all dimensions."

GUANGZHOU, May 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for more efforts in improving the country's innovation capabilities to accelerate the transformation of economic growth pattern.Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks while making an inpsection tour to south China's Guangdong Province from Thursday to Sunday."Indigenous innovation is the way out for an expedited transformation of the economic growth pattern," said Li, who told the local government officials to persist in the transformation of the economic growth pattern as a key element and strategic step in implementing the scientific outlook on development.Li called on the local authorities to make great efforts in expanding the culture sector and get inspriration from doing so to keep improving quality and efficiency of economic development, trying hard to find new ways for China's sound and fast development of economy and society in the post-crisis era after the global financial downturn.Li hoped Guangdong to pay equal emphasis on construction of iconic cultural projects and on building of cultural life at grassroots level. NANNING, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The government of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region issued a fire ban Saturday ahead of the upcoming Tomb-sweeping Day, in a bid to prevent forest fires against the backdrop of a prolonged drought.According to the ban, tomb-goers are forbidden to burn paper money or incenses and to set off fireworks in forest zones from April 3 to 17.They are also banned from burning straws, leaves, charcoal and others in forest zones.Violators will be fined or even detained and prosecuted, according to the ban.As of Wednesday, the drought, which began in southwestern China last year, has left 19.4 million people with water shortages and affected 6.48 million hectares of farmland in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi and Chongqing, according to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.It is a tradition for Chinese to visit family graves during the Qingming or Tomb-sweeping Day, which falls on April 5 this year. Memorial activities range from burning paper money to setting off fireworks.In 2008, the government made Tomb-sweeping Day an official holiday in response to public appeals.

WASHINGTON, April 12 (Xinhua) -- China hopes various parties will continue to step up diplomatic efforts and actively seek effective ways to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue and negotiations, Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Monday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama, Hu also said China and the United States share the same overall goal on the Iranian nuclear issue.Hu said China stands ready to maintain consultation and coordination with the United States and other parties within the 5-plus-1 mechanism, which includes the permanent UN Security Council members Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States and Germany, and in the United Nations and through other channels.Hu stated China's principled position on the Iranian nuclear issue, saying China is always committed to upholding the international nuclear non-proliferation regime and peace and stability in the Middle East.
