SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Amazon on Wednesday launched Kindle Cloud Reader, a web-based app that may help the on-line retailer to sidestep Apple's App Store restrictions.In its announcement, Amazon said Kindle Could Reader uses the HTML5 web standard to let users read e-books from their Kindle library from the Safari browser or Google's Chrome browser on their desktops or tablet, including the iPad.Support for Internet Explorer, Firefox and the Blackberry Playbook will be launched later this year.The app has a button linked to the Kindle Store, which was removed recently from the Kindle apps for iPad and iPhone.The move is taken as an answer to Apple's latest App Store restrictions, which banned developers to have any external links for purchasing digital books or subscriptions in the app, unless they give Apple a 30 percent cut from the in-app sales.Besides Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google Books and Canadian e- book seller Kobo have also altered their iPad and iPhone apps to comply with the rules.Meanwhile, publishers and retailers have been developing web- based HTML5 apps to sidestep Apple for more control, which is an approved-of technology for iOS devices.The Financial Times, Kobo and video-on-demand service Vudu have recently launched their HTML5 app to avoid paying Apple a 30 percent cut.Industry watchers said it is unknown how Apple will deal with such apps. DAMASCUS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The national archeological expedition recently discovered a gigantic building built with large-size hewn stones that date back to the Roman era, Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said Wednesday.The building, the thickness of its walls up to 1.5 meters, was found at Qumet Nibal site in the northeastern province of Raqqa, said SANA.Ibrahim Kheir Bek, head of the archeological department in the area, told SANA that the excavation unearthed a 6-meter-long entrance to the building, adding that works are still underway in the site.A day earlier, the national archeological expedition discovered a mosaic dating back to the 6th century A.D. in northeast Syria, SANA said, adding that the rectangular mosaic was found at Hwaija Halawa site on the banks of al-Assad Lake in Raqqa province.Ayham al-Fakhri, head of the national expedition, was quoted by SANA as saying that the expedition uncovered 58 square meters of the mosaic with various colorful geometric shapes.

BEIJING, Sep. 13 (Xinhuanet) --Experts have called for a national drug-control system after a nationwide deficit of a life-saving drug, which has lasted at least three months.Doctors at a Beijing hospital said some specialized hospitals, which perform hundreds of cardiac operations every month, have been paralyzed by their lack of protamine sulfate, which is commonly administered after heart surgery to reverse the anticoagulant effects of heparin.The earliest report of a shortage was in Hubei province on July 21. This was followed by reports of shortages in Guangdong, Shandong and Liaoning provinces.The Shandong newspaper, Qilu Evening News, quoted a regional sales manager, surnamed Zhuang, as saying the province had been allocated 150 doses of protamine sulfate after Shanghai No 1 Biochemical and Pharmaceutical Co Ltd recently resumed production of the drug."But its monthly use here is usually 10,000 doses," he said.The Ministry of Health has denied it is responsible for supplies of the drug and passed the buck to the State Food and Drug Administration, claiming the latter is responsible for the supervision of medicines.Shen Chen, head of the publicity office of the State Food and Drug Administration, said he was unaware of the shortage, but said the administration is responsible for the quality of medicines, not the supply."Development and reform authorities oversee the medicines' prices, while the industrial and commercial authorities oversee the storage. Enkhbold called a state emergency situation committee meeting on Monday to respond to the epidemic.Millions of horses will need to be vaccinated, given cases of the disease have been discovered in all but three provinces -- Bayan-Ulgii, Zavkhan and Umnugobi.Equine influenza usually broke out in spring and fall, said an official of the Mongolian veterinarian and breeding bureau. Backup content includes purchased music, apps, camera roll, device settings and app data.
