CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of Chula Vista’s controversial Drag Queen Story Time is moving to a different branch to accommodate the number of registrants, city officials said Tuesday. The event, which was supposed to take place at the Otay Ranch library, will now be held at the Civic Center library on Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. “The Chula Vista Public Library welcomes everyone, and programming at the City’s three libraries includes and reflects the diverse communities the libraries serve,” city officials said in a news release. “Hosting drag queens to read and relate with children promotes reading and literacy and sends a positive message of acceptance and tolerance.” A protest against the event was held Thursday, as opponents said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. Chula Vista Police intervened twice between both sides of the issue. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Customers narrowly avoided being hit by an out-of-control truck that struck a Chula Vista bank Tuesday, sending cash flying.Four people were using the ATMs in a vestibule at the Chase bank at 1120 Broadway about 12 p.m. when the Dodge Ram truck crashed through the glass entryway.Three customers dodged the truck, which came dangerously close to Anna Gonzalez.“I’m shaking; I have a big angel with me,” said Gonzalez.Gonzalez had tried to use an ATM but when it didn’t work, she moved to another machine. The first machine was the one hit by the pickup. Three other customers in the vestibule dodged the truck.Irene Archuleta was cut by glass from the vestibule’s shattered windows.“Regular day, going to the ATM to withdraw some money. The next you know there was a truck right next to me,” said Archuleta. “Definitely an angel looking over us.”An elderly man was injured and taken to the hospital, along with two bank employees who were in another room and thrown from their desks upon impact. There was no immediate word on the severity of the injuries. The driver, who was not identified, was not injured, according to Chula Vista Fire Captain Francisco Soto.Chula Vista Police are looking into the cause of the crash.Firefighters said the crash did not damage a load bearing wall, making it possible for them to remove debris and return cash to the bank. 1399

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A South Bay couple said they were able to pay off their mortgage by renting out their home on the weekends.“We paid off our house, and now we weekend on a boat. It’s incredible,” said Chris Morrow.Stepping into Chris Morrow’s backyard is like crossing a plane into an outdoor oasis. It's filled with toys, games, and multiple spots where you can pull up a chair and relax."You want to use every space of your backyard,” Morrow said. But having a dream backyard and a home in Chula Vista was once just a dream."Being a journalist, you don’t make a lot of money these days -- you follow your heart. Living in San Diego County, which is a resort town, you need to be creative,” Morrow said.Morrow is a CNN iReporter and a food and travel writer. About five years ago, before the housing market got hot, she and her husband leveraged their money and bought the Chula Vista home."I never even thought about Chula Vista, but it's a beautiful area,” she said. “I have a 1947 craftsman home, natural wood floors, beautiful plaster walls. There's a lot of uniqueness to it.”Morrow’s turned that charm into a small business: an Airbnb rental. It’s a move that drastically changed her life."Everybody wants to live that American dream, and we're doing it because we're renting this house out for Airbnb,” she said. Here's how they did it. Morrow said a few years into homeownership, she tried renting out just one of their rooms. It was a good first step, but it didn't bring in any extra cash. Morrow said they ended up spending most of the money on the guest they were hosting."I wasn't able to use that money for anything else, just entertaining,” she said. They decided to up the ante. Instead of renting out one room, Morrow said they rented out the entire house. It meant adding beds, furniture and moving into a hotel on the weekends."The first time we decided to rent the house we were so nervous,” Morrow said. “We must have driven by the house at least six times just to make sure they weren't having a huge party that you hear about in those movies."The decision was a hit. Now their rental can host up 16 people. The going rate is anywhere from 0 to ,800 a night. They’re regularly hosting large groups and have even done a wedding in the backyard. Most weekends are booked solid."We've paid this house off, and we were able to buy a boat, we're able to pay for the gas for the boat,” Morrow said. The extra income means they don't have to stay at a hotel on the weekends. Instead, they purchased a two-cabin, one-bath, 41-foot sport fisher boat. The purchase made possible by renting out her house."We’re living the dream,” she said. “We're staying here (the boat) on the weekends, and we're loving it.”In a resort town, one of the more expensive places in the country, Morrow is not only surviving, but she's also thriving. All it took was a little ingenuity and trust in people."We are creatively living the American dream,” she said.Tips for being a successful 5-star rental takes more than just renting out your house to be successful. Morrow has these tips she believes will help someone succeed:- Have outdoor games for guests- If possible, a garden can add to the backyard ambiance- Provide handwritten notes special for each guest- Post check-out information in a visible spot- Keep the refrigerator clean and add bottles of water, and maybe even a welcome gift- Include a local map with places that make the area special- Supply extra blankets and pillows (make sure they are clean)- Invest in great WiFi- If you accept smokers, provide ashtrays and smoking guidelines- Supply extra toiletries in an accessible spot- If you have a gas fireplace, make sure it’s on a timer 3721

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are investigating after a Christopher Columbus statue was vandalized in Chula Vista Sunday. According to police, officers were called to Discovery Park around noon after neighbors reported that someone poured red paint over the statue. When officers arrived they also found the words “genocide” and “FU” spray painted onto the figure. A brass plaque that used to be attached to the statue was also missing. Police say they believe the vandalism happened overnight Saturday. Crews from the city responded quickly to clean the statue. As of Sunday afternoon, police say they don't have a suspect description, but added that the investigation is ongoing. 696

CINCINNATI — Screen time was a perennial concern for modern parents well before the COVID-19 pandemic began. Now, with nearly half of Ohio school districts conducting classes only over the internet and most in-person socialization sharply limited, it’s even more of a catch-22. How much is too much? How little is too little?Children’s Hospital pediatrician Dr. John Hutton studies the effect of technology on children and adolescents, and even he isn’t sure.“Screens have become such a huge part of kids’ lives in a very short period of time that we really don't know a lot of the longer-term effects,” he said Friday. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has found some correlation between extended screen time and trouble with sleep, mental health, and school performance.Hutton said it’s likely not all the same. Using a laptop, smartphone, or tablet for school, as most Ohio children have done since March, doesn’t necessarily have the same effect as using the same device for social media or games.Still, he encouraged families to closely examine the amount of time they and their children spend using screens every day. He recommended setting aside screen-free times, such as during meals, and encouraging battery-free activities such as reading or playing outside as a healthy complement to children’s daily routines."I think it's very important,” he said. “I think every family is going to have something that's realistic for them. I think there's definitely not a one-size-fits-all."This story was first reported by Josh Bazan at WCPO in Cincinnati, Ohio. 1591
