SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whether you're out for the night in the Gaslamp District or heading to a friend's for a NYE soiree, there's plenty of options to get around on Dec. 31 without getting behind the wheel yourself.San Diego MTS is beefing up service on Dec. 31, adding more trolley service through the night and partnering with Lyft to offer ride discounts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - University of San Diego's Lamont Smith resigned from his position as head men's basketball coach, the school announced in a news release late Wednesday night. "This situation has been difficult for all concerned, and our prayers continue to remain with everyone," the school said in the release.  Last month, Smith was arrested in the Bay Area. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Years of emails and persistence finally paid off for a Del Cerro man whose sister died while crossing the street five years ago. Vahid Hamzavi's sister, Mina, was killed while crossing the street at the intersection of Navajo Road and Margerum Avenue. There are crossing signs and buttons, but no designated, marked crosswalk. Hamzavi started asking for a crosswalk at the deadly intersection in 2016. In February, he reached out to 10News because nothing had been done. City Councilmember Scott Sherman's office told us there would be a crosswalk installed by March or April, but still nothing. Last week, Hamzavi called the councilmember's office again. Sherman's office told him they expedited the work order with the Department of Transportation and Storm Water and that the crosswalk would be in place by Friday. On Monday, crews were already out measuring and outlining the design for the crosswalk. The work is expected to be complete on Tuesday.Hamzavi says the wait was worth it and he hopes the intersection will now be safer for those walking in the neighborhood.  1153

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two thieves prowled an entire neighborhood in Oak Park looking for something very specific on the vehicles.Along Blackton Drive, the sense of safety is shattered for David Cabrera.  Late Wednesday morning, Cabrera and his wife returned home to a neighbor telling them to check their license plate.  He discovered the registration sticker on his truck stolen. He had sliced his sticker into eight different sections as a precaution but it didn't help.Cabrera's surveillance cameras revealed the thieves:  a man and a woman walking together. A tree obscures the camera's view, but a woman can be seen behind Cabrera's truck, while the man stands and looks around.  The woman gets up and the two walk off.Seconds later, a neighbor saw the same woman peeling off a sticker from another car and the neighbor ran out of her kitchen to confront her.  That neighbor told the woman to put it back.  The woman got verbally aggressive but did put the sticker back.Neighbors called 911 but the thieves took off.  After Cabrera posted details on the Nextdoor app, five other neighbors reported also getting hit that morning."It's a feeling of violation. You want to feel safe in your own neighborhood," said Cabrera. 1275

One new task on their plate is employee temperature checks and monitoring.New technology, however, is doing that for them. It’s called the GoSafe, a stand-alone tablet two San Diego companies developed. Using Qualcomm's chips, San Diego-based OneScreen built a device that takes temperatures and uses facial recognition to allow or deny access to different workplaces and schools.Additionally, the GoSafe can assist health investigators in contact tracing. If someone shows an elevated temperature, it will have a record of who else scanned in around the same time.“It is not only a race against the vaccine, it is a race to go back to normalcy,” said Sanjeet Pandit, Qualcomm’s director of smart cities.San Diego’s Fluid Sound is now working to install the devices at businesses around our region.It recently did so as a test at Hungry’s, and demonstrated how it can reject access for people without masks.
